Hello Alistair, It really is free software. We had it written for our libraries, and released it under a GPL licence. It is now supported, and being further developed by an international team of experts, who are all volunteering their time. You do not owe Horowhenua Library Trust anything to use Koha, but we would be really interested in hearing how you get on. There are two mailing lists about Koha. The general list koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz and I would strongly recommend you join it. The second list is for developers, and sometimes gets quite technical. koha-devel(a)lists.sourceforge.net A new release (version 1.2.0) of Koha was released last weekend, and a fix for a few bugs that crept into that release will be available in the next two or three days. This new release offers a lot more help in setting up koha, and hetting it running for your library. Have a try and see how you get on. If you find problems, send a message to the koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz ; there is very likely someone there who can help. Koha, a wonderful program usermin, a wonderful program, has anyone had any thoughts of allowing users to be able cross between the two, or if there is any interest in this, let me know and we can have a cup, and work on a few ideas? koha install problems on RH 7.2

Well, I think I followed the directions... I have virtual hosted koha and opac on my Apache server. Koha.conf error with Install Script & other bug

Hello, I think I'm run across a problem which explains some problems other might be having (Items not displaying, etc), but I'm probibly wrong here. When I try to search the database, rather do ANYTHING with the database, authentication always fails and spits this error out in the logs. ~[ DBI->connect(koha:localhost) failed: Access denied for user: kohaadmin@localhost' (Using password: NO) at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i586-linux/C4/Database.pm line 41 Can't call method "prepare" on an undefined value at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i586-linux/C4/Search.pm line 1010, <KC> line 4. ]~ But yet my /etc/koha.conf clearly shows that I have my admin account specified and the password too database=koha hostname=localhost user=kohaadmin password=******** Wahhhh... Ah hold on, I found it. The install script creates /etc/koha.conf with the variable 'password=' when it should be 'pass=' Changing that fixes the problems with searching/accessing the database. (don't you love it when you solve your own problems) Now I just have issues with the Admin pages, all but the Categories page. Koha 1.2.0 Released

Its finally here! Nearly a year since the last release, we have a new stable release of koha. 1.2.0 The main new features in this version are: - Can search by dewey number - Keyword Searches can be restricted by a dewey number - Can restrict a catalogue search by a class of items - Simple acquisitions module - Deleting borrowers checks their accounts for reserves, current issues, and fines - New catalogue maintenance section - MARC importing from a file, and from z39.50 Main Bugfixes: - Keyword searches are a lot faster - Combined author and title search is now also searching series title - Combined author and title search is now also searching series title - Adding children and institutions works as advertised There have been numerous little fixes and a lot of code clean up. The structure of the tarball has changed to a more sensible layout, and the INSTALL document has been rewritten. There is also now a installer script, as well as a functioning database update script. All this should mean its the easiest Koha to install or upgrade yet. The next release wont take nearly as long, 1.2.1 is well underway. 14 June, 2002 To the Koha community; Hola, As you can guess from my switch from Maori to Spanish, we've picked up some new interest in Latin America. I'm looking forward to seeing the translation of documentation and our interface. We hope that our new volunteers will also want to jump in and start coding. If you're interested in helping in this effort, please feel free to contact me directly or to jump onto the developer's mailing list[1] and get to work. Beyond reaching out to Latin America, we're trying to reach out to other communities as well. The OSS4Lib[2] community has been very welcoming, and while we won't be attending their pre-ALA conference this weekend we do hope to get to their next gathering. The good folks working on MARC::Record[3] have also been open and encouraging. I hope that we'll be able to contribute back to them. A final note on reaching out, I'm hoping that we can start a dialog with the developers (and users) of the other Free Software Library Systems that are out there. While we've taken a number of different approaches, I think there is a lot of room for cooperation. We've got a great opportunity to come together as a larger community, in a way that no commercial system vendors could. I hope that we'll take advantage of it to create better, faster, more useful software for libraries of all sizes. 1.2 Congratulations to Chris and everyone else who's been involved in this push. 1.2.0 is out and the developers are diving in to 1.2.1! 1.2.0 represents a number of big improvements over the 1.1 series, we've got an installation script, real documentation, improvements to searching, some clean ups of the database, more tests, and maybe a bug fix or two. You can get your very own copy at <https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=16466> 1.4 Paul Poulain and Steve Tonnesen are continuing to work on the foundations of 1.4. They've started working with the MARC API, and are starting to integrate the MARC::Record toolkit. Now that the 1.2 series has hit the streets, look for things to pick up in 1.4! Translations While I've already mentioned the news about our progress on the Spanish side, we're continuing to look for volunteers to pick up more languages. If your native language hasn't been mentioned so far let me know, I'd be happy to put you on our list of translations. If a translation has already been started, I'm sure your contributions would be welcome. Documentation Nicholas Rosasco has been hard at work on the new Koha Manual. He's managed to put together a great book in a very short time. He's got big plans for where to go next too. Look for the documentation to just keep getting better! 7 June, 2002 To the Koha community; Kia Ora, I'd like to thank everyone for their hard work this last week. I'd also like to thank three individuals have have agreed to help manage the Koha project: Chris Cormack is our 1.2 release manager Paul Poulain is our 1.4 release manager Nicholas Rosasco is our advocacy/recruiting manager I received some good feedback from my letter last week, thanks. I look forward to hearing from more of you as the project continues to grow, please don't hesitate to write to me at <pate(a)gnu.org>. I'll try to get back to you quickly. Among the other feedback that we got was a notice on the <http://www.oss4lib.com> website. There are a lot of other projects there, I'd encourage you all to take a look at what people are working on. I think that there is a lot of ground for cooperation (for example, the MARC::Record Perl module which we'll be using for our 1.4 release). We've accomplished a lot recently, and it looks like the pace is just going to pick up. I'd like to talk briefly about what's happened and what on the horizon. 1.2 Many more clean ups and improvements have been made. Alan Millar, Mike Mylonas, Finlay Thompson, and Chris Cormack have been particularily active. There are some additional bits of work that should see their way into the 1.2 series as well. The 1.2.0 release is just around the corner, in fact a 1.2.0-rc2 tarball has been cut and is available at: <http://developer.koha.org/koha-1.2.0-rc2.tar.gz>. This release will be coordinated with a number of announcements in fairly high profile areas. This should result in a flurry of testing, use, and improvement that will carry us through a solid series of 1.2.X releases. One of the most exciting enhancements in the 1.2 series will be templates. This will not only allow libraries to easily change the look of Koha at their own site, but will allow us to make translations much easier. 1.4 Paul Poulain, Steve Tonnesen, and Sergey Yanovitsky have been hard at work laying out a database schema for MARC. Now that they're down to dotting I's and crossing T's, they're going to be starting on a clean API for developers. These two pieces will provide the foundation for a stronger, faster, better Koha. Translations In addition to our hopes for Spanish and Polish, Paul Poulain has started a French translation. If you'd like to show your cultural pride, please consider helping translate Koha. Documentation Nicholas Rosasco has started writing our documentation. We already have some volunteers, but could certainly use more. Even if you can only contribute a little time to read it and give us your feedback, or to write a short article, your help will be appreciated. I hope you've enjoyed this note. My plan is to send out a 'State of the Project' note like this on a weekly basis to keep everyone up to date. I'll continue posting them to our wiki[1] as well.
