G'day Chris, have attempted to import some marc data in acquisitions, using acqui.simple. I get an error "DBD::mysql::st execute failed: Table 'Koha.uploadedmarc' doesn't exist at /acqui.simple/marcimport.pl line 1045". Was wondering what the structure for this table might look like? A basic question

If you're a little tired of looking for errors in scripts, how about a philosophical question -- how many different kohas should there be? I've noticed that there are some significant differences in what libraries from different areas of the world expect their software to do. For instance, while ten-digit barcodes seem to work well in the South Pacific, in the US (and Canada?) the fourteen-digit barcode for both book ID and 'member' ID seems to be becoming a de facto standard. And then there's the whole MARC record discussion -- just whose MARC format are we discussing? There's Paul's MARC standard in France, there's USMARC, and I get the feeling MARC may not really be all that important Down Under. And while tracking and storing information about ethnicity is necessary in New Zealand, most libraries in the States would find that idea disturbing. It almost seems as if there are unwritten standards controlling the basic features of library automation systems in different countries. If you think about it, this makes sense. Libraries act like government entities (indeed, they often are), so its not surprising that they try to do things the same way whenever possible, to allow them to interact more easily. But they seldom have any need to interact with libraries outside their own country or area of the world, so regional differences have developed. Let's use our library (Nelsonville Public Library, Nelsonville, Ohio, USA) to illustrate my point. We have been investigating the possibility of using koha to replace our current Sanderson system. In listing the things we would need to change to make koha work for us, we so far have identified: - lengthen the barcode fields - accomodate batch imports and exports of bibliographic records in USMARC format - do away with the ethnicity fields - add support for the Z39.50 protocol to allow us to share catalog records with other libraries in the state of Ohio - and add support for the NISO Circulation Interchange Protocol (NCIP) to allow us to share user records with other libraries (and thus participate in the statewide resource sharing system). While these modifications are necessary to make koha a viable alternative for our library, they would be useless for Paul Poulain's library (or Roger Buck's library, or Steve Tonnessen's library, etc., etc.) So let's put my original question a little differently -- is one version of koha enough? Maybe there should be groups in different areas of the world working to develop regional versions of koha. Or has that happened already and we just aren't hearing anything about it? Classification Confusion

Can anyone please clarify the difference(s) between Koha/Opac "Format", "Item Type", "Class" and "Group"? Where the confusion started: When using "Advanced" search options menu (/catalogue/index.html), I note the option to search by "Class" but I cannot find a way to add an Item/Title to a "Class" entry in the Catalogue. Where I have looked for more clarification: When viewing the biblio using the moredetail.pl option, I see a "Group" option that includes "Class" and "Item Type" options inside the "Group" sub-menu. Comparing entries for "Format", "Group" and "Item Type": When using "normal" Acquisitions method to add a new biblio to basket, I see an option list for "Format". The "Format" option list includes select items that appear to include both "Group" and "Item Type" names. So, 1. Is "Format" the sum of "Group" + "Item" type? 2. Should the search option box be rename to search by "Format" instead of by "Class"... or none of the above %-| Any help in clarifying my befuddled brain would be appreciated. non librarian seeking understanding of tools

Would someone be willing to give a brief explanation of koha/opac/sitesearch differences for a non-librarian? I need to be able to tell librarians what jobs these tools will and will not do. I'm not sure what work is duplicated in the various products and what's unique in each. I know US librarians are always saying that if it doesn't use Marc, then they can't use it. So, is that yet another part that has to be added? The is a kind of de facto standard for public library patron numbers. The 1st number is a 2 (3 is used for collection materials) The next 4 numbers are the library number. There were once assigned by Bowker (if I remember right) but they stopped that years ago. The next 8 numbers are the patron number. The last digit is the check digit. So the number 2999900000001X means this is a patron (2) in the library whose code is 9999 and is the 1st patron. The check digit system does not use X like they do in ISSN and ISBN, I only used it as a place holder. But, then there are many libraries who do not use this system, so any system needs to be able to handle other formats. Many school libraries seem to use the student ID number for instance. The spreadsheet was one I made up quite a while back to help Rosalie when she needed a few numbers because she was waiting for barcodes. I didn't have the formula in front of me, so I reverse-engineered it and it may have some shortcomings. Publication Details

Greetings I have been interested in Koha for quite some time, however today is the first time we have been able to get it successfully working on our home network so I could access it. A few questions/comments: 1. Where is the publication information to be entered? I am old school trained Library Technician and when I catalogue information/document sources, etc I ALWAYS include the publications details, such as Publisher, Place of publications and date of publication (which for those who don't know is different from the copyright date). 2. The way of having to order everything before adding it to the catalogue, is tiresome to say the least if you are entering an existing collection into the system. Is there any way of bypassing this without causing too many problems. 3. Is there a way of not having a default pricing for invoicing, if you can not by-pass the order system? Again this is tiresome when entering an existing collection into Koha, as pricing will not scale or is an unknown quantity, or the books value has effectively been amortilised and is considered zero? On an up side, for people who are not familiar with library systems and the old card catalogues and the requirements to produce on, it is quite easy to use, if you don't want to enter all the existing collection into Koha. getiteminformation

getiteminformation (%env,$itemnumber,$barcode) doesnt appear to be working. I run a query in mysql that $iteminformation (fetchrow_hash'ed) does .. and get a result. anywhere that getiteminformation is run (circulation and catalog item/barcode boxes) i get a $rejected response.. i.e $barcode is not valid. (of course.. im using the varible names in this message.. i dont see them in the webpage.. all i see is the number i entered) getiteminformation is inside C4/circ/circ2.pm
