Hi, I decided to try to install on Windows. I seem to have completed the perl installation, but I'm stuck here: Copy koha.conf to /etc/ when I run updatedatabase mysql tells me the database hasn't been specified, and I think it's because teh config file is not located. Si? I can't find a directory called /etc, and no matter where I created it it doesn't work. I think the database does exist, as it shows up in mysql admin. Does the koha.conf also require a path to the database? Thanks for any ideas George

KOHA use

Hi. I have a book collection and I'm looking to organize it. Mostly I want to find the Library of Congress classification for each book and order them on the shelves that way (e.g. PN6231.E4H3). It would be really neat to be able to search the collection too and to let friends see which books I have. I have found a few programs that might do this (one, tyrannio, does almost exactly the above but doesn't work). Koha looks promising and it runs. Does KOHA support the LC call number? Where should I look to add it (I'm a computer scientist). Thanks. - Daniel Holth

We'll be working with a consultant who knows Pick, but we're trying to get a good handle on the process before he comes in. The biggest task for us seems to be to analyze the current database and see how its structure matches up with Koha's database. With around 200,000 items in the collection, the "massaging" stage sounds pretty daunting. What kind of database tools did the original system offer you? Were there existing functions for exporting data in a format you could import to MySQL? -- Owen

New Problem: Server down on ports 8080 and 8081

We have a new problem. When our network administrator rebooted our server, the OPAC and Intranet opening pages were no longer accessible; we got the message that "the server may be down...". By typing ps -xa, we were were able to see that the Apache server is running and that Mysql is also running, but what could have happened to our access to the two parts of Koha? Hi everybody, As we get further along in evaluating Koha and closer to an actual switch, we're starting to address thorny issues like database transfers. This brings up a couple of issues you all might be able to help us with. First, is there a good write-up of the database structure, with descriptions of all the fields? Some stuff is self-explanatory, like 'surname' and 'firstname' in the borrowers table, but others are more obscure. Second, is there any library out there that's made the switch from another library automation system, doing a full database transfer in the process? Troubleshooting Apache Server

Good morning. I have been trying to get version 1.2.1 of Koha up and working, but I'm having trouble getting the Apache server to run successfully. In particular, I keep getting a critical "error (13) permission denied: make_sock: could not bind to port 198" when I attempt to follow a borrower card number link from the URL http://198.31.79.73:8081/cgi-bin/koha/member.pl after performing a member search or when I go to look at the details of an item record. Would someone with expertise in this area be able to join me on the #koha-support channel sometime today or tomorrow to help me get to the bottom of this problem? I'm on Pacific Coast Standard time. 19 July, 2002 To the Koha community; Bon Dia, Well, I've heard a little bit of feedback on modules, and it seems that most of you are leaning toward the idea of using more existing Perl modules and needing fewer Koha specific functions. If you still want to toss in your thoughts, please do -- we need to come to closure on this pretty soon though, so don't delay. I'd still like to hear from people who are using Koha. If you've got a success story (or non-success story), please send it to me (<kaitiaki(a)koha.org>). I'd like to be able to use some of your stories to help publicize Koha. (And if you've had problems, perhaps we can find a way to fix them.) To help get a bit more data about Koha users (how many of you are there, where are you located, etc). We're starting to put together a survey. It will be hosted on the web, and I'll be sure to announce it here. Documentation The librarian specific manual has been written (thanks to Rosalie and her band of merry librarians). Nick has given it a first review, and it is now in the hands of another reviewer (Brig McCoy, who's a new contributor). With this, the manual is basically complete. It's not done though. Look for more information to be included as we go along. If you think we've missed something in our efforts so far, please lend a hand. Translations The French translations are continuing apace. The manual has gone through a first draft and is being reviewed. The French Koha website is nearing completion, and the 'From the Kaitiaki' notes are being translated regularly. A second librarian has contacted me about a Spanish translation. Cristian and Enrique have been meeting together and have volunteered to start translating Koha and providing support to Latin American (especially Chilean) libraries interested in using Koha. Let's wish them well. Community One of the most exciting things happening in the world of Koha is the increasing amount of visibility we're getting. I've recently had email from New Zealand and New Caladonea about articles being written about Koha. I've heard from people interested in seeing Koha translated into Arabic. We've also seen some evidence that Koha is now in use on five continents. We're also starting to get some notice outside the library world, most recently we were mentioned in the Linux Weekly News (in their 'Development Section'). Wow! The future is looking bright.
