Hi Everyone, Several weeks ago my co-worker Owen Leonard posted a message to the list asking for methodologies pertaining to the transition from one database to the KOHA database. In other words did you sit down and go through file printouts of each database and fit the puzzle together? Did you actually electronically dump the original database into KOHA and looked @ the results of what was missing? Or did you use another process. (Keep in mind I am not a techie--thanks!) Also, if you look at the index of all the KOHA files, for example -- branchtransfers--what is branchtransfers--what does that mean? There are many file names that we don't know what they mean--therefore we don't know if that file is important to us. Any help you can give us is appreciated greatly! Thank you and take care. Lauren, When dealing with a file of MARC records there are some tools to find what fields have been used. MarcEdit will let you know which fields are used and how many times. You can also select a field and see what subfields are used in your file. http://ucs.orst.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/index.html It is free. MARC RTP is also free and gives a more detailed report. It shows which fields and subfields in those fields are used in your file. It also shows the largest number of characters in each field. http://marc.ise.canberra.edu.au/ It is a good idea to run these on your database every so often, even if not moving it. It does show errors. For example, if 1 field 244 shows up and the number of records with field 245 is less than the total then that 244 most likely should be 245. Obsolete fields can be identified and either deleted or moved to another field. Koha status

My systems administrator is trying to set up our Apache server from scratch, and he has run into difficulties as outlined below. Can anyone give him a hand with some troublshooting? I am also going to give him instructions for getting onto the koha support irc channel, so he may be going online to seek further assistance that way. His name is Stan Blum and his email address is sblum(a)calacademy.org. Larry Currie I did all the setup stuff for apache, but can't get it to start. I'm trying to run it on the second network card, which is 198.31.79.74 and has the name informatics.calacademy.org. There should be no other applications using this address. The apache error_log gives the following : getpeername: Socket operation on non-socket getsockname: Socket operation on non-socket Error getting local address I think this might mean that the second card is not "registered" in the appropriate configuration file for the operating system (it hasn't been used before). However, it does appear to be functioning because I can ping the IP address successfully from another machine (although I haven't yet tried unplugging the network cable and seeing if that disables ping-ability -- something I should probably test to ensure this ping response is from the right source.) When I run netstat -tnlc, I don't get any listings for the 198.31.79.74 IP address; just ...73 and the localhost. I'm not sure that's the right thing to check, but I thought I'd try it. BTW, no one will be able to see ...74 from the outside, or ping anything else, because of the firewall. If you could pass this info on to someone with redhat - apache experience, I think we could sort it out pretty quickly -- or at least get to the next step, the apache configuration file, which confuses me because it has separate entries for Listen (IP address:port) BindAddress, and Port I'm also not sure about the inetd versus standalone setting and the owner and group settings. -Stan

Hi folks - a post forwarded from politech, which I thought was interesting given the discussion a few weeks back about not storing reading and browsing user records. Seems to me that if you are an American librarian that you might not want your library system to store this kind of info - better to not store the info at all, than than to hand info over to the feds (Live free or die? Moi? :-). It would be cool to have a "null logging" mode in Koha where history data is kept in an anonymised format useful for statistical analysis, without implicating individuals. Other z3950 servers?

Hi, I've got some books printed in the UK and I just found out that the British Library also supports z3950 access. I just wonder if its as simple as adding the connection information to the z3950server table? Hi all, Earlier, I was looking up books using the z39.50 connecting to the library of congress. When the book did not come out when I used the ISBN number, I tried looking it up using the AUTHOR. Its now been 615 minutes and still processing. I've already processed others books since that but this one hasn't stopped. Any suggestions? Thanks. God bless. William

Adding members: Area; Inventory

Thanks, Dorian, for the answer re: z39.50 My next question is regarding adding members. There is an option after the address that allows me to select the AREA. Is this fixed to the scripts and not the database? Is there a simple way to fix this for use with our own "area"? Also, is there a way to list all the contents or an inventory of what I already have in the database? Thanks again. God bless. William

Hi, I've recently installed koha for use with my personal library. After testing it, I found the z39.50 search option and tested it out. After a couple of trial and errors, I was able to get it to connect to the library of congress and got the data. After the data has been edited and posted, I end up with the search results cluttering up the Z39.50 Search Tool. The question is: how can I clean up the Search Tool page? Thanks. God bless. William
