Waiting for user manual: newspaper, publication, ...

Ok, koha works, i've learned how to insert books and i suppose how to insert other things like CD, videos, ... But for newspaper/magazines and periodical publication in general?! My little background on library management knows that there's ISSN number, but i've not understood if i can insert one record (we are subscribed to this publication), a record for every issue, or a more fine-grained article level. EG, the keyword will take care of the publication in general, or the specific argument of the issue?! Explain me, please. Thanks. -- dott. Translators

Translator volunteers.... Since people are starting to ask me for copies of the documentation for translation purposes.... We now have a list for just translation issues https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/koha-translate has information for subscribing to the list. What will be going across that list is: Docs for translation (mainly the From the K. information) Management info * Where to submit translations * Rules of thumb * new version announcements re doc.s My thought at the moment is that before Koha will "officially" support (ie, list a translation of either documentation or application) a language I'd like to see at least two active translators listed on: http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/wiki/index.php?page=TranslationTeams At least one participant should able to cope with the technical language of librarians and UNIX installation. Please be aware if you are consenting to volunteer that you will, most likely, be asked to help the developer and support volunteers translate questions and comments as well. This is not likely to be a one time job. Eventually, those languages that are officially supported will have website space at <country code>.koha.org... currently, the only language/nation to have that status is France (fr). Those languages that continue to be supported will keep those sites, those that aren't will be turned off until the two-active-person rule is met. I, and the other Koha project members, care sufficiently for the user communities and reputation of open source in general enough to not want anyone stuck with an application they can only upgrade to a new version in the wrong language. Installed! ;) Now some question...

I've installed koha 1.2.1 without big problems. But i've some question. 1) 've to do in cgi-bin dirs (koha and opac): ln -s . koha to make all the system works. The URL looks like: http://opac.sv.lnf.it/cgi-bin/koha/search.pl It is normal?! Why not mention this in docs?! 2) http://koha.sv.lnf.it/cgi-bin/koha/admin/marctagstructure.pl Not Found The requested URL /cgi-bin/koha/admin/marctagstructure.pl was not found on this server. Apache/1.3.26 Server at koha.sv.lnf.it Port 80 ...and really there's no marctagstructure.pl file anyware. 3) I'm not a librarian, so could be some missed background, but some aspect are for me not totally clear. Particulary the acquisition/budget/book funds schema. Again, i've inserted two test book (one, ``Computer Networks'' of Tanenbaum, linus sorry me ;) with only the minimal data. Now i wont to edit these, adding some keyword, but i came to ``biblio record'' editing (all field empty) and not to these fields. 4) Where i can get the sgml source of the manual, or at least the .pdf or postcript for pretty print?! 5) I need a quick translation at least of the OPAC module to make usable here (waiting for 1.4 to a real translation). Where i can start?! How i can translate to minimize headache for the next 1.2.X release?! 6) Where i can modify the link for ``OPAC'' and ``Library website'' in homepage and top/bottom of the page?! I think my user have no interest to get a book in new zeland... ;-))) Ok, for now it suffices. ;) -- dott. Newbie Question

Hello, I've just downloaded koha from the Website and installed it. Then i discoverd a few Bugs (to many arguments for C4 call makelink in some skripts)and correctet them. Now i'm just playing around and every second click leads me to another bug. I'm wondering if I do have the latest version of koha or if there are newer ones. The hlt.katipo demo runs much better then my bunch of skripts (I'm not asking: why does it look different, meanwhile I've set the Preference-Variabels). Thanks in advance Dorian

Some question: postgres, italian, ...

I'm looking for a library management software for my organization, so i've found koha. Interesting... ;-))) Some question: 1) there's just a translation in Italian?! Can i contribute this?! 2) i want to use koha with postgres, but i need assurance that work with potgres. I've had experience with other software written for mysql that in theory work with pgsql but in practice all sources have to be rewritten. ;( 3) In any case need to be rewritten the schema. Please, don't distribute the schema in mysql dump format, is not portable and are full of (nonstandard) SQL instruction. Someone have just rewritten the schema for postgres?! Basically have to be rewritten the KEY instances (to CREATE INDEX) and the auto_increment (to serial). Again: PG support real referential integrity (FOREIGN KEY). There's somewhere a E/R schema that explain referential integrity, or can i add referential integrity (if someone exlain me the schema?!). 4) I'm new to library related problem, but seems that the MARC format is a standard in this field. Someone know if this also rule for european country?! Before starting a big google session, if someone have some pointers... Thanks. -- dott. You've got it done now. If you look at the Search.pm path now, you'll see that it is in /usr/local/koha/intranet/modules/C4 which is the correct path for the 1.2.1 C4 directory. That part is fixed. As far as Set::Scalar. Do you know where it is installed? Try running locate Scalar.pm or find / -name Scalar.pm -print (much slower, use only if locate doesn't work) Steve.

5 July, 2002 To the Koha community; hello, This week, we've got something to celebrate! Yesterday was the day we celebrate our Independence in the United States. I think that we're well on our way to declaring our independence from proprietary library systems. Koha is moving along nicely, and it seems that other porjects that dovetail nicely with ours are doing well to. 1.2 1.2.1 hit the streets yesterday. It included improvements to the installer, the inclusion of sample data (for testing), improvements in the Z39.50 system, and a number of bugfixes. Chris has plans for more improvements in the 1.2 series, but we'd encourage you to install 1.2.1 instead of waiting. The newer 1.2 releases will be a very simple upgrade from your existing systems, which means less pain for you. Getting involved in 1.2 now means that you'll have the opportunity to help steer the project through your input, which means more gain for you. Less pain and more gain is a win all the way around. Translations This is the first note that will be translated (as far as I know). I'm looking forward to seeing a whole new group becoming involved in Koha as each set of translations starts up. If you're interested in translating this or other Koha documents, please get in touch with me (<kaitiaki(a)koha.org>) to find out if anyone else is working in your language already. Community We've had another Koha support vendor start up this week, this time in Nigeria. Beyond this, we're starting to talk in more detail with librarians about helping to steer the project. Two big developments outside the Koha project are worth noting: * the MARC::Record project has released version 1.00 of their software. This is a big step for them, and represents a major win for the larger free software for libraries community. * a new project is starting up to develop a SIP and NCIP module for Perl. This project is already talking to some Koha developers as well as the people in the MyLibrary project. We're already using MARC::Record in our 1.4 development, and are looking forward to having SIP/NCIP tools that we can merge into Koha as well. Projects like this are a great boon to us and to other library projects. I'd encourage anyone with the skills and interest to support worthy projects like this in any way you can. A project is underway to start developing a larger organization to help coordinate work within free software for library projects. As more information develops, I'll share it here. Koha is continuing to build momentum and the community is growing as well. This really is your chance to get in on the ground floor of an exciting new endeavor. Whether you choose to get involved in Koha, MyLibrary, MARC::Record, the new SIP/NCIP project, or some other Free Software project doesn't matter, what matters is that you get involved. You can write code if you're able, write documentation if you're up to it, or test new software releases if you have the hardware.
