I've worked with 6 different ILS, and reviewed more than a dozen in 1997-1998 as part of a volunteer project for an NPO, and NOT A ONE featured a one-click-all-install for the very reasons that Paul gave. (And what are these mythic systems that some are referring to anyway? I can post some real horror stories for those needing edification about the joys of some turnkey systems that cost $5,000 USD and up and what they did to various librarians of personal acquaintance) So, again: Bravo, Paul! It would be nice if Koha eventually became simpler for those of us not gifted with (or with much time to acquire) technical expertise, but if one is a library worker one has to realise that there is always more to learn and if we want a system for free (so to speak) we should at least be trying to learn something. IMHO, if both tech- and library-side people try to bridge the gap instead of sniping (review some of what was said in the past week re: Koha), things might even get to where everyone can be happy sooner. Since this question seems to come up quite often (and there seems to be a general misconception that the ILS has to somehow "work with" scanners), I wonder if there shouldn't be some general information about barcode scanners added to the Koha webpage? Though I would hate to add one more thing to the long FAQ page. Maybe it's also time to subdivide the FAQ page into categories? FRBR Display Tool

The Library of Congress has a free tool available for the display of MARC records. It takes a set of records and displays them using the Functional Requirements for Bibliographical Records. Not sure if it could become a piece of Koha, but just wanted to let you know it is available and might save some work if it could be pluged in. It contained several hierarchical display examples of bibliographic data using the FRBR model. The FRBR Display Tool takes the work done in "Displays for Multiple Versions from MARC 21 and FRBR" one step further. It transforms the bibliographic data found in MARC record files into meaningful displays by grouping the bibliographic data into the "Work," "Expression" and "Manifestation" FRBR concepts.

Bar code scanners

Hello...We are just beginning to explore installing Koha as our ILS. (Currently we have none.) We are running a Linux network, affiliated with the K12LTSP project (www.k12ltsp.org) I'm wondering about bar code scanners and bar codes. Are there any scanners that you know work with Koha? We want to buy the most economical obviously, but want it to work, and most of them appear to be plug and play. Any suggestions? Thanks... During our 2.0 release irc meeting, we identified a mechanism for prioritizing bugs currently listed on bugs.koha.org. We've got six that we're considering 'must fix' issues. There are twenty-nine more that are 'should fix', and four that are 'might fix'. 'Must fix' bugs will be corrected before the 2.0.0 release is made. We will try to fix all 'should fix' bugs, but won't delay the relase unduly to do so. 'Might fix' bugs will be fixed if someone manages to get it done before the 2.0.0 release is made. If you have a bug that has not yet been reported, please report it soon. At some point, we're going to start putting off fixing newly reported bugs until the 2.0.1 release. If you think we've mis-prioritized a bug, please let me know which bug, how critical you think it is, and why. ANNOUNCE: Koha perl dependency RPMs for Red Hat 9

Surprisingly, Koha still seems to work. ;-) The RPM spec files have all been hacked in a rather cookie-cutter-like manner from Red Hat's perl-HTML-Tagset-3.03-28.src.rpm. I'm interested to know whether they work for others. Hope this helps some people with their Koha installation. Tuesday, June 24, 2003 23:40 CDT Hi, Max! Anne is certainly correct in pointing out those sources. You really shouldn't have any problem downloading MARC records from LC. All the tools are there, as Anne pointed out. If you need an editing function, get the MARCEdit and MARCMaker/ MARCBreaker utilities (available for free) from the LC site, and you'll be off and running. They really do work quite well, and afford batch processing, too. If you need any help with them, just let me know and I'll be glad to help. As for free records, for anything American definitely try LC first. For children's and juvenile literature, you are likely to get those 520 (summary) and 650 (subject) fields. (If you want to add uncontrolled -- i.e. non-thesaurus based -- terms specific to your local collection, you can always code a 650 with indicator 1 blank, indicator 2 7, the term in subfield a and the word 'local' in subfield 2.) Two other good sources available are: AMICUS - The National Library of Canada's free union catalogue service, which one can sign up for (don't worry: it is free and they don't seem ever to bother anyone with mail of any kind) via the login page at URL <http://amicus.nlc-bnc.ca/aaweb/aalogine.htm> MAPLIN Global - so far (going on 6 years) a free parallel search CGI tool that will allow one to search for MARC records in up to 8 (more realistic times-results with 4 or fewer) libraries at once, offered by the Province of Manitoba (Canada) Public Library Services Branch. The URL is <http://maplin.gov.mb.ca/cgi-bin/dir.multi.cgi> For children's level materials, you might find (under Public) that North Toronto and WPL are good; you'll also be able to search your own National Library at the same time. When downloading, either choose a mnemonic name or number the files but remember to specify the file extension as .mar or something other than .cgi (which tends to throw most ILS) I can't imagine a school library having as much free cash as Anne seems to think is lying around. Before migration a few years back, one school division in my home city had to pay over $100,000 CDN for retrospective conversion of its union catalogue (ca. 20 schools), which isn't really that cheap when you consider that each school's library team still had to fine-tune (read: re-edit) all the records again anyway. If your librarian finds downloading and re-editing too much a burden, try soliciting for parent and adult volunteers and train apt students to download records for editing. If you leave specific enough instructions, the better volunteers may be able to do a good part of the editing even (and there's always the MARCEdit program's script function to make global changes fast, and you can create a simple template that can even be edited with WordPad so you don't endanger the good data you do have with too many untrained hands adding to the catalogue). The last school library I worked at converted its entire collection (ca. 7,000 records) in less than 18 months using volunteers supervised by a then-0.40 time librarian. Not bad and it didn't cost anything except the people's willing time. On a separate note ... I don't know if it's just me, but Koha doesn't seem to mind different file extensions for MARC records whereas other systems I've worked with fairly freak if a file doesn't have the system specific designation. If you're having trouble importing MARC records from any source, try saving a file with a different file extension (.mar, .mrc, .mrk, get creative) and that might do the trick. Just a thought.
