Derek, Your Winnebago data has item information. For example on the last record, _9p14.95 ^_h001.535 R51b^_p10006^^WL^_t6^^^] is item information. Subfield h contains the specific call number for the item, I think subfield p is the barcode number. This field can be repeated in a MARC record, so it is possible to have several items attached to one bibliographic record. As for the structure it basically follows the Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR). We are dealing with an expression of a work, the manifestation of that expression and then an individual copy of that expression. There is lots more about FRBR at the IFLA Web site. I'm not sure, but was the database constructed to conform to FRBR? If not, it might be a good exercise for a library student to map the database to the FRBR. In the commercial field only VTLS has a FRBR system available. I'd like to extract as much information as possible out of the Winnebago data. Basically, as far as I know, each USMARC record in the file represents an actual item in our library. Classification field and more

Hello I have been employed to set up a library at the South Pacific College of Natural Therapeutics. Someone suggested we use Koha as a library and an IT person has installed this. I am a librarian used to using different systems but not Koha. I have searched the archives re Classification field but couldn't find a definitive solution. I want to use National Library of Medicine (NLM) class. which is part of Library of Congress and is alphanumeric. When I put this in the Dewey field it doesn't come up on the catalogue screen. When I put it in again under Group modification it doesn't save any of the data I input at that stage. Does this mean I can't use a class. system other than Dewey? Which brings me to the next few points - I have been reading about bugs but I'm not an IT person so it goes over my head. I am using Acquisitions Simple. When I try to add a biblio without an ISBN, the next page I go to doesn't have as many fields as the testsystem on Koha. i.e. It doesn't have a classification field (It does have Dewey field); it doesn't have an ISBN field so the entry ends up on the third page without one. If I enter a record via the ISBN on the first page, it then takes me to the third page which is basically the ISBN page and misses out the second page completely. Once in the catalogue there is no Item type (though I have previously entered it and I have added it originally through the system parameters). no NLM either. I can modify the record on that page but when I go the the Group modify page and add NLM, item type and ISBN, it doesn't save any of the information. When I click on Group delete, it sends me to a page unable to be found. Are these bugs? Can this be fixed? or am I missing something completely. The System Parameters do not contain as many parameters as the test database on Koha. Missing - MARC tag structure, Links Koha - MArc Db, MARC check, Thesaurus, Authorised Values, Membership Category. And the system preferences do not contain all the preferences that the test database has, although I have added Autobarcode myself. When I enter a new member the Area field has a dropdown box with a choice of areas from Horowhenua. Since this library is in Auckland is it possible to change and where would this be done. RE barcodes - I gather from the archives I have to use 9 digits with the last one as a check digit and that could be x on the actual barcode. I'm sorry to ask all these questions but I am at the library only one day a week and I spent a very frustrating Friday getting this far. Maybe I can shove my 2cents worth in here, since I was involved with the database design. There were sever reasons for the design. Firstly it was good database normalisation to no repeat information. Secondly it made reserves more flexible. If I reserve "Return of the King" I don't care if it's a Hard or Softback. So a reserve could give either because the would be the same biblio, but different biblioitems. On the other hand I might require a large-print version, and in this case the reserve would specify the particular biblioitem. There may be two of those paperbacks. These are each items, and when I take one out the item is what's recorded. It has an accession number. When I bring it back it records against the item code. I had doubts about this structure at first, and would have made it 2 levels based on my little library experience, but I was persuaded to do it this way, and I think it is a good type of structure to use. To demonstrate, ill use The Return of the King (cos the premiere for the movie of this will be in wellington where i live :-)) 1/ biblio = which contains information such as title, subtitle, author, copyrightdate, abstract. And links to the bibliosubject and additionalauthors tables to hold subject information. Biblioitems hold information such as itemtype, dewey classification, publication date. Problems with 2.0.0pre1

1. addbiblio.pl breaks all my browsers in various ways: - IE5.5, NS6.0, Opera: there is no green background on category rows (010, 020 etc). Also the 'Add biblio' button and 'z3950 search' link extend beyond the window on the right hand side, and force horizontal scrollbars - NS4.7: page is properly centred and green backgrounds are present, however an entire block of MARC fields are repeated 9 times, resulting in a very loooong page. Clicking on +- link generates an even larger page - 900kb, again with all fields repeated many times - IE5.5 'Add biblio' causes IE to report an error on line 1834 - links '0', '1' etc don't go anywhere I've read through Pat's email listing all reported bugs and couldn't find what I'm experiencing. BTW the above mentioned bugs were also present in previous V1.9.X releases. I reinstalled 2.0.0pre1 from scratch just to be sure the problems I'm experiencing weren't caused by all the upgrades I made in the past. I have a standard RH8 install. Am I missing something? Help. 2. There is also a bug in the installation script as it needs to create /usr/local/koha/log/logs directory - otherwise httpd will not start 3. catmaintance.pl doesn't work Thanks for any help you can offer me. Translating KOHA

I'm currently setting up KOHA for the centre for further training at my university and for the staff to be able to feed the database, I have to translate at least parts of the interface to German. What is the recommended way to translate KOHA? Are there any "tools" available? In the mailing list archive I read about a previous effort to translate KOHA to German, but I couldn't find any related packages. Has it been cancelled? -- Christian Hennecke

Problems with 2.0.0rc1

Hi, I've just finished the installation of Koha on a RHL 8.0 server, loaded the sample data and I have the following difficulties: 1) When trying to add a new biblio (without ISBN), I get a screen with with a boxed titled "MARC biblo" with numbers from 1 to 9, hyperlinked to nothing. Cliking on any nuymber or on the Add Biblio button does nothing. I've put the result page at http://www.cdeacf.ca/~simonp/addbiblio.pl.html 2) When trying to add a website, I get a blank page 3) On the MARC search, no fields or subfields are availables, no search are possible... 4) In the Circulation module, I get an error when trying to return a book. I have this in the error log: $branch not defined at /home/httpv/koha/modules/C4/Circulation/Circ2.pm line 841., referer: http://koha.cdeacf.ca/cgi-bin/koha/circ/returns.pl I wonder if the sample_data file is outdated, or if I missed some steps to setup koha properly. Hello, I am a student librarian at an environmental centre at which we have recently installed Koha and are setting up a library. We are interested to know as to how people have gone about 'printing out' the Dewey or classification number for the item, as Koha does not have this function.
