Koha 2.0.0pre4 and z3950 search

Hello All, I have installed a new koha server in order to replace the old one in the next few weeks but I can't work with the z3950 search. The rest is working quite well. I have looked around the koha-error-log and found a correct HTTP 200 OK. With a tcpdump on port 7090, I can't see any request to the loc server. I have used the client from yaz (2.0.4) to connect to tcp:z3950.loc.gov:7090/voyager without any problems in order to exclude any issue with the z3950 connectivity. importing mysqldump into newer version

Hi there, Well, I recently lost my koha installation 1.2.2 I would like to install version 1.2.3 instead and I wonder if it is possible to directly import the mysqldump made with 1.2.2 into the newer version 1.2.3 what would be the operations to proceed ? or would it be simpler to reinstall 1.2.2 and then upgrade ? thank you. I've successfully retrieved about 4000 MARC records in about 40 minutes. I've also got an EAN to ISBN conversion program there. Bulk loads of MARC records

We've just setup our Koha server and will have lots of books to add. Is there a best way to add books w/o having to type in all the data? I thinking getting creating a list of ISBNs, turning this into MARC records, and then uploading. Is the a best way to generate MARC records from a list of ISBNs? Is the a bulk upload tool for MARC records into Koha? In my defense, I think that what one comes to find as standard in a workplace tends to become what one thinks everyone has access to, too. Again, my apologies for not thinking about that incompatibility issue. I don't know if it's possible, but maybe people can run the MARCEdit program on other systems. My younger brother assures me that there is a way to run Windows programs on Mac platforms (he does this at home and at work), and my best friend has some kind of Windows simulator for his Linux system at home. Otherwise, I still would be willing to help out people on a case-by-case basis in record conversion, at least in the short term. Also: I don't know that this will help, but from the Programmer's section of the Help in MARCEdit there is this blurb (which does get back to the need for PERL which many of you programmer types will doubtless be more familiar and comfortable with than MARC): ======================================================================= MarcEdit and PERL: Description: Though MarcEdit is soley a Windows application, PERL afficiondoes can still make use of the MarcEngine, so long as they have PERL installed on their Windows machines. No, MARCEdit doesn't provide a guide to the MARC field structure or appropriate tags. Like me, it assumes that people working with the program would know MARC. In my defense, there, I would add that I did write Luke off-listserv with a mapping and referred him to the full Library of Congress Bibliographic Format online resource page for further detail. There are various introductions online to MARC format but probably the best is from the LC site again, under the link _Understanding MARC Bibliographic: Machine-Readable Cataloguing_, subsection MARC21 Reference Materials - Part VII. A Summary of Commonly Used MARC21 Fields, at URL <http://www.loc.gov/marc/umb/um07to10.html#part7> which gives brief descriptions of the top 10% of the fields (the ones occurring most often) and their format. The whole of that section would be an excellent resource to consult before data conversion, especially for programmers/sys admin folk unfamiliar with MARC but taking on the task of retroconversion of an old database to MARC. Again, on a case-by-case basis, I would be more than willing to help people figure out their record-mapping requirements for conversion. There's very little I can do in terms of Koha development, but at least I can help with this peripheral level of support. I think the link to that UMB section above should more than suffice, but if Pate or any of the other Koha experts think it would be worthwhile, I could put together a rough guide to mapping data fields to MARC for the wiki/koha site. As I have posted to the listserv several times, there is a VERY NEAT and FREE program available off of the Library of Congress MARC ... Tools page at URL <http://www.loc.gov/marc/marctools.html#recordtools> called MARCEdit. You will also need to download the free tools MARCMakr (and MARCBreaker) from the same page. The part that addresses your specific sit' reads: "[...] the MarcEdit Delimited Text Translator provides users with a simple method for mapping delimited files into MARC." For the information in the following fields, I'd suggest the following mapping to the 541 field (both indicators blanks; below $ = subfield delimiter) which you are free to use or not: Type ---------> 541 $o Type of Unit Accession ----> 541 $e Accession Number (I wasn't clear on what kind of info your library was storing here but assumed it was an accession number of some kind) Acq. Year ----> 541 $d Date of Acquisition Cost ---------> 541 $h Purchase Price I realise that the 541 field is normally used for archival materials, but its usage in that regard is not prescriptive and it seems a shame to waste a very well-defined field. I know the issue of the call numbers has been addressed on listserv before. I've ignored all of the discussion because I need LC numbers and Koha isn't quite there yet. Hopefully someone else will be able to redirect you to that info and where and how it should be mapped. IIRC someone wrote to the listserv a while back about fixing the ISBNs; in any case, you will need to remove the hyphens in mapping it over to the 020 ISBN field. Luke, I can also tell you from the small sample provided that there may be some inconsistencies in your library's catalogue viz. current ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic Description) and AACR2R (Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2nd Revision - most up-to-date being 2002 revision, 2003 update) standards. If your library is following different standards, that's fine; you'll just need to adjust some of the MARC coding and so it helps to know that from the start. Otherwise, someone will need to go into the records and tweak them manually (e.g. author's surname is not to be all caps in proper ISBD), which, depending on your student and or adult library volunteers, is an excellent little project, in my experience at least. You should also find out from your librarian before you start which thesaurus the subject terms are from (I'd guess Sears from what you gave) as this is also directly coded into the MARC fields (650 indicator 2 gives thesaurus source: Sears would be 7 $2sears<version no.> e.g. 650 _7 $aSpace flight. $2sears19). Data Conversion

Good Morning All, Am after some kind words of advice from anyone who may know how to do this. On IRC, I spoke with Chris and asked the question, "Can I insert direct into Koha's database for migration, or does it have to be MARC format?" Chris' response implied that since v.1.3, that its not easy to insert direct into MySQL with the information and that I should contact the list as Paul may have some advice on either how to do it or, how I can create MARC from the structure I have. At the moment, I have tab delimetered file (as per attached (column headings up the top), but with quite a few more records in the file :)). Presently, I'm just seeking to get the library up by the end of the week and superfluous data fields (cost, the 'extent' column, acquisition year etc) are irrelevant if they'll be difficult to implement. FYG, my plan is to send off MARC requests (we have a request and receive type of system for MARC records from the Department of Education), put them in the breeding farm for those records with ISBN's so we can get some more information on the books than is currently stored in the system. If anyone has any ideas and or thoughts - or could be kind enough to point me in the direction of either: a. How to import the data direct into the MySQL tables - which tables and fields? (and I do have a pretty good knowledge of MySQL etc etc) b) How to create MARC from this data (limited knowledge of PERL, PHP etc but willing to learn to make it happen) Or, if anyone had the time to create the script required that would be tops. Thanks for your time and I'm really glad to be one of the people supporting Koha in our Government education department (primary school) as an Open Source alternative to the proprietary programs out there. Records in the original Koha tables have a biblionumber, while records in the MARC tables have a bibid, and the marc_biblio table keeps track of which biblionumber links to which bibid. If you are importing and adding MARC records, your bibid will generally be the same as your biblionumber. (Because of the nature of MARC records, you will almost always have one biblio and one biblioitems record for each MARC record.) I suspect what you are seeing with the MARC search tool is not the biblionumber but the bibid. Try doing a SELECT * FROM marc_subfield_table WHERE bibid = [?whatever the biblionumber was] and I bet you will see the same record you are seeing on the MARC search screen.
