We`ve had at least a couple of very unpleasant situations, including court case, just because borrowers "ditn`t know" they have to return books earlier and they found shortening due dates "unacceptable". One old lady went to local newspaper and called us "fascists" only because we charged her $10 for overdues. Counting on people`s decency and common sense is asking for trouble, in my view. Book drop and grace days won`t solve the problem. You may think I`m a little paranoid, but all I want is to eliminate as many possibilities of controversial situations as possible. Regards, Tomasz.

But I have been doing some recent work back-porting it to dev_week, and rel-2.2. So hopefully i can answer some of your questions... There are basically 4 different ways that Koha handles due-dates that fall on a holiday, these a set by a syspref called 'useDaysMode' The most common (i think) holidays mode is 'DateDue', this mode does exactly what you described above. You can define a national holiday as an 'anually repeating' holiday Heres paste from the sys-pref description. --- useDaysMode - "How to calculate return dates : 'Calendar' means that loan-length is increased by ALL holidays occuring between issuing date and due-date, 'Datedue' means that due-date will be increased until next non- calendar day, 'Days' means that holidays rules are ignored" --- We are still currently testing it on the 'devweek' branch wth the NPL templates, and we'll hopefully get some of the newer changes over to rel-2.2 in the next few weeks FYI: it looks like Antoine has got holidays currently included with the latest 2.2 release, using the 'default' templates. entering book order into koha 2.2.3

I have a book order from Mackin Books. The order has all the info for the books on a CD. The company puts our school library's individual barcode on the back of each book. I want to enter the whole order into koha. It worked on our Winnebago software. I can scan the school's barcode on the back of the book intoo the winnebago system and all he info comes up. By the way, the regular librarian is away for a year. He is a chaplain in the US Navy Reserve. I am just filling in until he gets back. I have never done this before.

Opac Template: Fatal Error in Loop Output

Hi Folks, a) User wants to log into opac for user features (opac-user.pl) b) The user has items on loan c) User gets a server error page Note: there is no error when there user has nothing on loan Below is the respective error message from opac-error.log HTML::Template->output() : fatal error in loop output : HTML::Template::param() : attempt to set parameter 'reserves' with an array ref - parameter is not a TMPL_LOOP! at /usr/local/share/perl/5.8.7/HTML/Template.pm line 3069, referer: http://opac.bswa.org/cgi-bin/koha/opac-user.pl I'm not clued in enough to understand why this error occurs or how to interpret the log message. The logins just used to work and now suddenly they don't, This error is certainly not replicatable in the Liblime demo, so it's something to do with my setup. Please, can anyone help with suggestions? TIA, Bo

I didn't want the koha logo to look like my company logo or the logos of the other participants in the project, so that other companies and libraries would feel comfortable using the Koha logo, and wouldn't get confused with my company (Katipo.co.nz) The primary purpose of that graphic was to be on the splash page of the Koha programme, we didn't have letterhead, brochures, cards etc. (Chris feel free to step in if I am being a bit clumsy) Starting at the begining: The word Koha is a maori word meaning gift or donation - or perhaps more "giving your specialty to the collective event". Possibly even a sense of quid pro quo. In traditional maori society (and still) you would bring a koha (Contribution) to an event like a funeral or wedding or big meeting, often food or the specialty of your region. When it's your turn to hold an event all your guests will bring a Koha, to ease the burden of catering for a lot of people. Hopefully you can see why it seemed a good name for an open source project. A common graphical representation here (New Zealand) is a koru, or fern frond that is starting to unravel. This symbolises (among other things) growth & new life. Another common "new life" symbol is an egg. So for our new project we made a symbol which is a koru - unfolding fern frond, inside an egg. The project started here in New Zealand, so as we made things that were meaningful for us, and hoped that they would translate internationally. The big "egg" logo with text inside didn't however scale that well, and didn't work that well as a printed logo - you had to do full colour printing for the green, and so when the new 2.0 release of the Koha software was coming out, we thought we'd update the logo for use in the software, and use by the various people and organisations that participate in the Koha project. http://www.koha.org/community/resources/logos/koha-logo-2005-Library-System… So we still have the koru and the egg, but reversed. The egg is black and the koru is white, and they are much smaller with more prominence being given to the words. The word "Koha" stays the same, but people can put the tag line words that work best for their situation. Some people want the word "free" others find that it confuses their prospective customers. We have a big contingent from France, so having words in french is appropriate for them. You might wonder why we don't have a representation of books as a logo. It is interesting but libraries themselves don't want to be constrained into being only about books. So our logo is about growth, and possibilities, and aims to be open and inclusive so that all companies who use and distribute Koha can use it in a way that meets their local requirements, but still maintains a consistent brand. Installation Problems (mainly perl related)

Ok, let's start off by assuming that I'm a complete idiot. Well, not a complete idiot, but someone who's not overly familiar with linux. I have set up a webserver running Ubuntu 7.04 server edition (thus with apache, php, mysql etc). Importantly, it works, and a website runs off it beautifully. I am now having serious trouble installing Koha (version 2.2.9). When I run "sudo perl installer.pl" and then select 'yes' to continue the installation, I am given a list of perl modules I need to install before the installer can run. I have installed these, insofar as I can, however there are a number I cannot install. Here is the message I get: [for clarity I have used angle brackets to signify block quotes] >You are missing some Perl modules required by Koha. Please run this again >after installing them.
