Follett to Koha 2.2.9 migration help

I am the volunteer IT guy for a small private school. We have been using Follett's Circ Plus/Cat Plus software for many years, but their upgrade path is too expensive and our old Mac OS 9 machine running the software in the library had a disk failure. It's time to find another solution. Koha seems to be the perfect fit for us, but I need to show that it's better than what we have in order to get approval. I've been reading what I can find in the list archive about migrating to Koha from Follett. Many topics are years old and probably specific to whatever the current Koha version was. Does anyone have experience with this migration recently? I've been able to install Koha 2.2.9 and all it's prerequisites on my MacBook Pro (Mac OS 10.5) as a test by combining multiple online help pages. I have a MICROLIF file with around 8000 records exported from our Follett catalog. I ran the bulkmarcimport.pl script and it brought most of the data over as far as I can see (I'm not a librarian), but seems to be missing our bar-coding information at least. I'm also unsure if I can migrate over our patron list as well. Any personal experience or relevant online hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Darren.

koha installation version 3.0

I am installing koha3.0 alpha version on RHEL 5.0 using postgres 8.2.5. Once I am doing 'Make test', it is giving the following erro. I have created koha database. It seems to me that while installing koha is not updating all the tables in koha database. Any help in this regard is highly appreciable. HTML not being encoded for display?

(Koha 3.0 alpha, Gentoo Linux 2.6.24, MySQL 5.0.54) In tracking down some problems I was having, I've realized that it doesn't seem Koha doesn't do any HTML encoding with regards to MARC entry or biblio display. For example, in the "Add a MARC Record" section, I can enter in a title (tag 245c) of the following: My Book is <font size="+5">Great</font> Sure enough, when the completed MARC record is submitted, the additem.pl page will show the title with the word "Great" really big. Once added to the catalog, it will show up in the search engines with that word really big as well. Surely everything entered by users and librarian in the OPAC and Intranet sites should be HTML-encoded if it's going to be redisplayed, right? Did I miss some setting in the Administration menus that would disallow HTML from being entered in a form, or is this a fairly big bug? Thanks.

Forum boards

So I started a good discussion about starting a forum board and I have been reading the responses. I want those who are against the forum board idea to think of what is the purpose of a mailing list and how well does serve all members. The mailing list is great for developers. It allows them to exchange ideas about how the content they are working on will work. They have a good un derstanding of the beast they are creating so looking at the history of a question that has been asked. Forum boards are strong for the general person. If I have a question I have all the responses grouped into one place where I can see how something is refined. I can easily search the entire discussion for my answer or limit it to one section to get a really refined set of answers. They also have good post stuck to the top defining what this section is about and FAQ's. I read two forum boards regularely. The first one I read every day several times a day. It is http://www.bikeforums.net/ . Look at the structure of board. I ride a mountain bike and currently I am building a road bike. I am what is called Clydesdale. At a minimum 3 of the sections I delve into daily. I use the bicycle mechanics section to get answers on my build. I needed help attaching a carbon fiber chain stay protector and had my first response within 12 minutes. I had 12 within 12 hours. All nicely bundled under one topic idea and without being interspersed among other content questions. But I am also a clydesdale so I need to know things like what re good wheels for a clyde. The mechanics section is ok for that but in the clyde section I can search for an easy answer, and I found what rim and spoke count I can go with on this build, or if that does not yield clues I can post on a specialty wheel with a low spoke count and see if anyone else has had experience with them. The second forum I read is http://forums.majorgeeks.com/ for computer help. Notice again how it is broken up. How quickly questions are answered and how the answers are grouped together so you can see the refinement of ideas the sometimes lead to the strongest answer. So how do I envision a forum working for me on koha? Well I work at a school the has a Windows 2000/XP setup for the teachers and the students. The main server is an Ubuntu 6.06 file server and right now I am woring on getting koha 3.0 alpha running on debian etch. You can see that I would need right now to look at an install section of the forum for debian pertaining to getting the alpha done. I was going through the INSTALL.debian file and things went along pretty smooth but I have hit a bump in the road. Let say that 30% of the people installing this hit the same point as I do. Now if I have a forum board I have a sticky at the top that says something like Installing of debian /version/. I read along with that and do my install my problem may be solved because of refinements to the document by post. If the install section does not answer that I post my question and I may have a response to that question withing minutes instead of having to wait for the mailing list to go out, someone one read my question, and then me either receive the answer directly from them or from the next mailing list that gets sent out. But what if that does not solve my problems. How long would using the mailing list take to possibly solve it. I had one questions that took 6 months for someone to finally send me an answer. Someone borught up the idea of a wiki and I think for the installs that is a possible route to take but we need to find a place to put them all. We can no longer have them seperated out and possibly not being there. Yesterday I was looking for the ubuntu install one for an idea about modifying a file and it was either down or gone. We also need to end the practice of not showing every package that needs to be installed. It should not no longer say in the how to if you get errors then install those packages. I should be able to run through the instuctions just like I do for stuff posted on howtoforge.com. No matter what the mailing list will be needed but the forum board will bring a broader sense of community to the koha project. Forum boards are lively neighborhoods. They add to body of knowledge in a group. I would like to see this discussion continue and maybe some of the development team weigh in on what they think.

this was my orig post which stated a system with duality in theory what is best is a forum that also mails all posts to subscribers if they wish . then if they want to post they can go to forum to post .....but they get all posts without have to check forum several times a day which,,,, is a pain in the ass. my opinion... but I am usually right. ed sharpe archivist for smecc **************It's Tax Time! New Koha3/Zebra Install; Problems with Zebra and Opac Searches

Hello. I am a new Koha admin, 2.99 worked great, now trying out Koha3/Zebra on Unbuntu 7.10. I'm having problems with Zebra setup/searching and hope somebody has an idea about this zebra error 109. I can catalogue in koha3, in mysql I can see items but I cannot search them with zebra. I installed koha 3.x, had it apt-get or -MCPAN various perl modules. I d/l both yaz and zebra which I configured and installed. When I run zebra as root it shows the following in the log after a search (eg: "Dune") which is a bib and item in my koha system. Here is what I know/think. 0. ERROR 109 is usually a username/password issue. Is that true? 1. Now starting as root is OK as the /var/run /var/lock files get owned by koha.koha which is good. 2. The zebra log below show that by kohauser/password is OK and I'm logging in I think. 3. The wiki says "configure zebra" however I cannot find any details about what I have to do. 4. I haven't changed any config files but have kohaadmin'd some of the branch,fines,rules inside the system. So if anyone has koha3/Zebra going, had/fixed this error or has an idea PLEASE contact me with your ideas to try and I'll get right on it. I'll be considering rolling back to NoZebra towards the end of the weekend. I seem to be having a little trouble posting to this list. Apologies if this message appears more than once today. Hi, I'm working with Carol on the test instance of Koha at the NREL Library. We followed Cindy's directions below, but repeatedly got a server error when we clicked on the edit subfields button. Before I go any further I should point out that we are using Koha on a Windows machine. I'll also note that I am not a programmer, and am just guessing here. That said, I think there may be a problem in this part of the code. I'm going to do my best to document what occurred below so that Rob and the other Windows developers can take a look at it and hopefully determine whether the problem is related to our installation or is actually a problem in the code. In my windows directory this is the default path to the value_builder folder: C:\usr\koha228\intranet\cgi-bin\koha\value_builder I made a copy of value_builder and moved it here: C:\usr\koha228\intranet\cgi-bin\value_builder As soon as I made this change I was able to go back to the subfields page, and the edit subfields button now works fine. I have left the value_builder folder in both locations for now, but I don't really want to do anything else with our installation until I know what the ramifications of this change might be. One other problem we've noticed on our install is that some of the pages don't load correctly. There are empty spaces on the page, but when rolling the mouse over them, some of the images will appear. This problem occurs using IE6. I haven't tried it in Firefox, but will today. Can anyone shed some light on either of these issues?
