Back when I was evaluating open-source ILS products, I saw a nice feature in PINES that I'd love to see in Koha: shelf browsing. Once you find an item (via search or whatever), you can click the "Shelf Browser" link and get a list of all the other items sitting on the shelf around that item (based on... I dunno, call number? Dewey decimal number?) Anyway, it's a nice way to virtually browse the shelf around the item you want, especially for a small church library like ours with only a hundred items or so. Does Koha have a feature like that anywhere in 3.0? If not, is it on a todo list anywhere? Thanks.

I'd like to see that too. I've heard talk of that feature, but I haven't seen anything concrete. It's not in the 3.0 alpha. -- Owen -- Web Developer Athens County Public Libraries http://www.myacpl.org
A old scholar-librarian I know says, Half a book's value comes from the books near it. I would also like to see the shelf browse feature. It's especially valuable in closed-stack collections, where patrons can't see the books on the shelf. If it uses the Dewey or LC call numbers (and they are retained in the record) it could work even in those (European) libraries which shelve according to non-subject systems such as size or accession number or fondi. -- Paul Chandler On 11/03/2008, Owen Leonard <oleonard@myacpl.org> wrote:

That would definitely work. We'd need to partition by item type as well and have different ordering rules for each one; you don't want fiction to be ordered by its Dewey number, and you don't want it in the 800s next to the nonfiction (normally). -- Jesse
I'd like to see that too. We use a sequential catalogue number system and it's proving challenging to keep track of where I'm at as far as call numbers go:-). Oliver D. Does Koha have a feature like that anywhere in 3.0? If not, is it on a todo list anywhere? It does now :-). Sunday evening I whipped up a basic degradable shelf browser and this afternoon Owen made it pretty. We've both pushed up our patches and it will appear in the 3.0-beta.

Thanks. You're very welcome, thanks for the suggestion.
