Simplifying Koha records
by Cris Luengo 06 Mar '09

06 Mar '09

Hi list, I was hoping someone could point me to information on how to set up Koha for a very small library. We have about 1500 books, and all users are employees, so we want all users to be able to take out books by themselves. My main problem so far is in the large amount of data I need to enter for each book. Currently the collection is indexed by a program that only stores author, title, publisher and year (and is not complete for all books). I have zero knowledge about MARC records and about 90% of the fields available for filling in. And I don't want to put too much time into learning about them either, since they don't seem necessary nor useful for such a small collection. At first I was under the impression Koha was suitable for small collections, but now that I've got it running I'm thinking I might have been wrong about that. Any help at all will be appreciated. Thanks, Cris.

Re: [Koha] I'm confused about where normal view customization occurs
by Rachel Hollis 06 Mar '09

Hi Doug, according to the "about Koha" link, we're on Koha version 3.01.00.001 which was installed October 2007 (Perl version: 5.008008, MySQL version: 14.12 Distrib 5.0.32, Apache version: Apache/2.2.3, Zebra version: 2.0.32). Could there be so subtle a change - 3.00.00.107 displays 245a & 3.01.00.001 displays 245a & b - between versions? It seems to me that if you go through the frameworks and define how fields are going to display, then it should display as defined. I’d turned XSLT on in hopes of resolving an PAC holdings/availability display issue and since it made no difference, figured I could return it to the original setting of off; doing so resolved the display issue - the connection is beyond me. Our PAC is very similar to http://catalogue.buttepubliclibrary.info/ except for the Refine Your Search box, cover images and 245 display of a, b & c on one line (ours displays on two lines – 245a & b, then 245c). I do not feel very helpful and I am sorry. If I think of anything over the weekend, I will email you. Hi All It was brought up today how inventory will be done and what the process will be. I read the manual but is there anything specific that we will need to do? Thanks Ed Edward J. Searching Authorities
by Beda Szukics 05 Mar '09

05 Mar '09

Hi all Some time ago I imported some authority records using bulkauthimport into my Koha (witch I have set up unsing the defaults of the english installation). I did a rebuild_zebra.pl -a to build the zebra indexes. Searching a record I have some strange mistakes: I find the records using the point "Search main heading" but I don't find any using the other two possibilities (Search Authorities, Search all Headings). The same happends if I'm working on the biblio records and I try to connect a biblio record to the corresponding authority-record. I have to use the second possibility (Main entry) and can't use "Main entry (only $a)". I guess I'm missing some zebra-configuration. Any idea where to look? Beda

Request for Photos
by Chris Cormack 04 Mar '09

04 Mar '09

Hi All I'm working on my presentation for Kohacon 2009 (are you going? if not... why not :)) I was wondering if people had photos of their libraries, and/or people in their libraries using Koha, that they wouldn't mind being used in a History of Koha presentation. If so, can you send me links and/or the photos (off-list). Thanks very much Chris

Migrating from 2.2.9 to 3.00.01 once more
by Marty 04 Mar '09

04 Mar '09

I have Koha 3.00.01 up and running on my new old box, yeah! But I am really confused as how to migrate my data from the 2.2.9 database. (I screwed it up once already before my other box died) I know there is a Wiki (http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=22_to_30) but I cannot say that is really helpful for me. Like: installer/data/mysql/updatedatabase.pl this script will finish the update of the database. Which database? There is nothing in the koha3 database yet? Do I update my old database? Does that move my data? It seems that this Wiki is left over from the Beta version? In short, I am confused (I am easily confused). Can somebody just tell me how to get my data (biblios, items, patrons et al) from 2.2.9 to 3.00.01? It can't be that hard, I think? Thanks

Wayfinding maps based on collection code (location)
by Darrell Ulm 04 Mar '09

04 Mar '09

Hello, I am working on an OPAC feature to display graphical overhead maps and I would like to incorporate this into the existing Koha 3 codebase. The idea is gleaned from NEU library and would work the same way with these exceptions: • Allow many/different image types or content links: gif, jpeg, png, flash, html, etc. • Have a specific link for “find it on map” or “map it” – something like that. I am looking for suggestions for ways that would be acceptable to the Koha coding community as far as where to store the data and where to link it. It would seem one could enter link data using the existing authorized values. In other words, create a new authorized type “maplinks” then allow Koha administrators to put in any content they want much like the existing icon system. In addition, a sys-pref is required to turn this feature on/off should be present. Any ideas, thoughts, chance for inclusion. I want to work with the Koha coding community to mesh this as nicely as possible. What would be the best way to proceed and what would the release manager like to see. I am aiming on finishing this project by Summer 2009. Thank you, Darrell Ulm
