Question about Migration of data to Koha
by Laurie Henry 28 Oct '09

28 Oct '09

Hello, We just purchased Koha Express, and I am trying to discover the best way of migrating our 6,000 records from a program called LiBRARYSOFT to Koha. I wanted to describe the steps I've been taking and ask if this is the best possible way to go. I'd also very much like to see examples of a file that has been uploaded successful from another program to Koha. What did it look like? LiBRARYSOFT's MARC-record report looks like this (except it is much longer). The fields are tab delimited. There seems to be no way to indicate an empty field, so the Excel columns do not line up automatically: a lot of shifting is going on. 004590000000001690000000010001700000020001500017100002200032245005300054 260001500107300003300122520004500155590000900200650001100209852002400220 949002900244949001600273 a0307278069 : a2007037139 aBoxer, Sarah, ed. aUltimate blogs : masterworks from the wild Web / aNew York : axxii, 343 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. a'A Vintage Books original.'--T.p. verso. aBOOK aBlogs. 81/20/2009_914.95_t1 aAC5 .U45 2008_i000051144 lVine Street__ 004730000000001810000000010001700000020001500017100002000032245004900052 260001500101300002700116590000900143650003400152650002900186650001200215 852002000227949002800247949001600275 a0307263584 : a2005044709 aRemnick, David. aReporting : writings from The New Yorker / aNew York : axii, 483 p. ; 25 cm. aBOOK aJournalism - United States. aReporters and reporting. aEssays. 86/13/2009_90_t1 aAC8 .R453 2006_i300000 lVine Street__ 004190000000001450000000010001500000020001500015245004000030260001800070 300006500088520002700153650003000180852002000210949003200230949001100262 a085229929X a2004566204 aEncyclopedia Britannica 2003 CD ROM aChicago, IL : a2 CD-ROMs : sd., col. ; 4 3/4 in. + 1 insert (8 p. ; 12 cm.) aTitle from disc label. aElectronic encyclopedias. 87/16/2008_90_t1 aAE5 [2004 01264]_i000050454 lDayton__ 004630000000001570000000010001700000100002700017245007000044250004500114 260001500159300003100174590000900205650002700214852002000241949003100261 949001300292 a0060924322 : aFeldman, David, 1950 - aWhen did wild poodles roam the earth? : an ImponderablesTM book / a1st HaperPerennial ed.Questions and answ aNew York : axx, 297 p. : ill. ; 21 cm. aBOOK aQuestions and answers. 88/13/2009_90_t1 aAG 195 .F4 1993_i030000583 lFranklin__ 004530000000001570000000010001900000100002300019245008000042260001500122 300002400137590000900161650002900170650002800199852002400227949003300251 949001100284 a100760779538 : aFloyd, E. Right now, I'm cleaning up the Excel file to make sure that each field and subfield is in a separate column. My expectation is that at a certain point I'll be able upload my Excel file to MarcEdit and translate that .xls file in to a .mrc file. Does this seem like a reasonable course of action, or can you suggest better (and especially faster ways). I'd prefer to do the work myself if at all possible. I'm sorry if I'm asking a question that's been asked before-I browsed the archives but perhaps not as thoroughly as I might have. It contains the layout of which MARC tags/subfields get displayed in which order/layout. My library is also looking at using MARC 21 77X for analyzing entries (we get a lot of serials issues that are also monographs). We'll probably be writing some code for it; that probably doesn't do you any good right now, but know that you're not alone in wanting to do this kind of thing. We have always catalogued things like individual papers in conference proceedings and articles in serials so we have a non-MARC database chock full of analytical entries that we don't want to loose in the conversion. I understand where they need to go in MARC 21 - fields 773 and 774 are going to get a lot of use. However, try as I might I can't get these fields to display in the ISBD view (or the normal view for that matter). I have gone into the MARC structure and edited the subfield constraints (to 'hidden 0'), so they show up in cataloguing mode. But I can't seem to get them to show outside of the MARC view. I was kind of hoping I wouldn't have to do a detailed 505 if I could just list all the authors and paper titles in 774. But if it won't display, it's not much use to the end user. Thanks for any advice, I did trawl through the archives which is how I got as far as I did! Git and Koha v3.0.4
by Chadwick, John, DCA 27 Oct '09

27 Oct '09

I am trying to use git to update an install on a development box before we go to the production server. Today I started a directory for the koha clone on my development box. The directory is kohaclonetest When I use git to download a clone I end up with version 3.00.01.061. I have one branch called master. I then issue the command: git checkout -b stable304 v3.00.04 I am now in branch stable304 I issue the following commands: perl Makefile.PL --prev-install-log /usr/share/koha/misc/koha-install-log make make test make upgrade So far, so good. Now we should be required to update the koha database. When we navigate to http://localhost:8080 <http://localhost:8080/> we are presented with the regular login screen, no required database updates. When we go into the koha staff side the version is still showing 3.00.01.061. John +----------------------------------------------------------------------- -----+ John Chadwick, Ed.D. Fwd: Some research you may be interested in

I thought this survey may be of interest to some of you as well and Kate has told me I'm free to share it with you all. Nicole ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kate Davis <davis.kate(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Oct 26, 2009 at 4:34 AM Subject: Some research you may be interested in To: nengard(a)gmail.com Hi Nicole At the moment, a colleague and I are undertaking some research for a conference paper that I thought you might be interested in. Actually, I thought you might be interested in responding to our survey! ;) Basically, we've been thinking about libraries' use of SaaS, the cloud and Open Source Software, and pondering what the implications are for libraries' relationships with their local IT groups, for service sustainability, and for staff skills. Given your background and interests, I thought you might be interested in completing our survey. You can find it at http://tinyurl.com/libsysskills. And you can read the full abstract for the paper we're writing on my blog at http://virtuallyalibrarian.com/2009/10/20/libraries-saas-the-cloud-and-more…. We're really keen to get data from outside Australia so that the research is more meaningful. Location Code Icons in OPAC Details Page
by Bibliotecario Casa Balthasar 27 Oct '09

27 Oct '09

Hi all, I recently associated some icons with the authorized values our library uses for various location codes using the staff client, 'Administration>Authorized Values...etc'. I'd like for them to appear on the OPAC details page as a visual cue for the users. I noted pretty quickly, however, that this wasn't enough to get them to display. I'd hoped, with my very limited knowledge of html and such, to be able to more or less cut and paste from another instance of the same sort of thing and then to make the necessary changes, but between the XSL templates that are Greek to me and the opac-detail.tmpl that seems to make reference to it (specifically around line 264 for the location code), I have to admit that I'm feeling pretty helpless about my prospects for moving ahead in this regard. Is there some relatively easy add or edit that I could perform on the template files, or would it be better to give up until ? The version of Koha I'm working on is 3.00.01 (and yes, I know we should upgrade... though if upgrading would rectify this problem I'd be quite happy to hear about it). Thanks in advance for any help or advice! -- Patrick Redmon Librarian Casa Balthasar
