Naming Practices: Authorized Values & Patron Attributes
by Chris Mueller 06 Nov '09

06 Nov '09

What are "best practices" when creating new categories for Authorized Values and new codes for Patron Attributes? By accident I found that the maximum number of characters for a new Authorized Values category is 10. -- Nicole: Can this type of info be added to the documentation please? Suspect there is a maximum number of characters for new Patron Attributes codes but prefer not to create test codes until I find one which is too long. Anyone know what the max number is? Also suspect that there might be problems with SQL statements if any special characters are used in the categories and codes, other than perhaps "_" and "." (underscore and period). Is it best to use only alpha characters when naming categories and codes? Thanks for any insights and guidance. Problems with bulkmarkimport.pl or zebrasrv or something...
by Br. Francis Therese Krautter 06 Nov '09

Hello, I can't seem to figure out what the problem is with my configuration, I can't find any of my records when I do a search in the catalog. I don't receive any error messages after running: sudo -u koha perl bulkmarcimport.pl -d -commit 1000 -file /media/DossierCom/Informatique\ Service/Bibliotheque/bib5Final.mrc -c UNIMARC -x 992 -y 2 output (truncated): 43100 MARC records done in 1474.46829676628 seconds ... other than a few duplicate records being found and ignored. Then I run: sudo -u koha perl -I /usr/share/koha/lib /usr/share/koha/bin/migration_tools/rebuild_zebra.pl -v -b -w output (truncated): Records exported: 43100 ==================== REINDEXING zebra ==================== 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] zebra_start 2.0.43 abd433d1a315576cf1f4a53f2c70365f9a76477f 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] config /etc/koha/zebradb/zebra-biblios.cfg 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] Loaded filter module /usr/lib/idzebra-2.0/modules/mod-grs-xml.so 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] Loaded filter module /usr/lib/idzebra-2.0/modules/mod-dom.so 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] Loaded filter module /usr/lib/idzebra-2.0/modules/mod-grs-regx.so 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] Loaded filter module /usr/lib/idzebra-2.0/modules/mod-text.so 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] Loaded filter module /usr/lib/idzebra-2.0/modules/mod-grs-marc.so 08:09:53-06/11 zebraidx(19300) [log] Loaded filter module /usr/lib/idzebra-2.0/modules/mod-alvis.so ==================== CLEANING once again, no problems, or errors. Then I run: sudo -u koha zebrasrv -f /etc/koha/koha-conf.xml to start the server... no problem. Now... To my knowledge, the records should appear either in the catalog or the reservoir... but nothing is listed there at all! when I do a search, zebraserv picks it up: 08:10:50-06/11 [server] Starting server zebrasrv pid=19486 08:11:12-06/11 zebrasrv(1) [session] Session - OK 1 unix:/var/run/koha/zebradb/bibliosocket 19488 08:11:12-06/11 zebrasrv(1) [request] Auth idPass kohauser - 08:11:12-06/11 zebrasrv(1) [request] Init OK - ID:81 Name:ZOOM-C/YAZ Version:3.0.50 9d63e51087691087c5adb6b2c6265b07e8ca0224 08:11:12-06/11 zebrasrv(1) [log] dict_lookup_grep: (\x01\x0D)(th(o|\xC3\xB3|\xC3\xB2|\xC3\xB5|\xC3\xB4|\xC5\x8F|\xC7\xAB|\xC8\xAF|\xC5\x91|\xC7\x92|\xC8\x8D|\xC8\x8F)m(a|\xC3\xA1|\xC3\xA0|\xC3\xA3|\xC3\xA5|\xC3\xA2|\xC4\x83|\xC4\x85|\xC8\xA7|\xC7\x8E|\xC8\x81|\xC8\x83)s) 08:11:12-06/11 zebrasrv(1) [request] Search biblios OK 0 1 1+0 RPN @attrset Bib-1 thomas 08:11:13-06/11 zebrasrv(1) [session] Connection closed by client The only way I am able to find records in my database at all is by looking in the inventory section Here is the MarcXML output of one of the records stored there: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <record xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.loc.gov/MARC21/slim http://www.loc.gov/standards/marcxml/schema/MARC21slim.xsd" xmlns="http://www.loc.gov/MARC21/slim"> <leader>00529nam a2200169Ia 4500</leader> <controlfield tag="008">091105s9999 xx 000 0 und d</controlfield> <datafield tag="090" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">27965</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="101" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">français</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="100" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="a">20091106 frey50 </subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="200" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="b">LIV</subfield> <subfield code="f">TOURVILLE Henri de, Abbé, 1842-1903</subfield> <subfield code="a"> Pensées diverses "Piété confiante "</subfield> </datafield> <datafield tag="210" ind1=" " ind2=" "> <subfield code="d">1920</subfield> <subfield code="c">Librairie V. more sql silliness

Been playing with this for awhile SELECT CONCAT('http://images.amazon.com/images/P/'isbn'.01.TZZZZZZZ.jpg') FROM isbn_experiment LIMIT 10; Seems straightforward prepend and append the amazon url's for cover art to an isbn. Yet I only get the first part not isbn nor the end. Done several permutations but I ain't getting anywhere.

Re: [Koha] BiblioCommons
by Linda de Boer 05 Nov '09

05 Nov '09

G'day I am working for a local library and they are concerned about moving to OpenSource in case it is not compatible with BiblioCommons. From what I have read it looks like there should be no problem. Are there any direct references I can cite to prove this? Or any libraries out there who have already implemented Koha and BiblioCommons? Thank you.. Linda de Boer

problems moving records from reservoir into catalogue
by Br. Francis Therese Krautter 05 Nov '09

05 Nov '09

Hello, I have managed to export my old filemaker database into a spreadsheet which I then used with MarcEdit to map the fields. Having then complied the file into a marc file, I tried to import it into koha. The process goes smoothly, but after having done all the importation steps, all the records remain in the reservoir. If I try to add them individually by clicking on the add Biblio link, it informs me that I have several required fields left blanc. These "required fields" consist of things such as the number of the musical movement AND the map scale value, and other things that have absolutely nothing to do with regular books. I don't understand why these fields are required, and I don't see how I am going to be able to batch import all my records if it is going to continue to complain about not knowing such things - which are totally irrelevant pieces of information. I suspect that this has something to do with UNIMARC (which my koha IS installed under), and perhaps the default marc framework? I have also used the perl migration_script with the same result... everything in the reservoir, nothing in the catalog. Thanks for your help! BFT

Request to participate in 2009 Library Technology Guides automation survey
by Breeding, Marshall 05 Nov '09

05 Nov '09

Please respond to the 2009 library automation perceptions survey. This page describes how to participate: http://www.librarytechnology.org/blog.pl?ThreadID=137&BlogID=1 More details: For the last two years I have conducted a survey and written a report on the perceptions that libraries form of the quality of the core automation products they use and their satisfaction with the service they receive. Results from previous editions: http://www.librarytechnology.org/perceptions2008.pl http://www.librarytechnology.org/perceptions2007.pl I have begun to collect data for the 2009 edition of the survey. This is an opportunity for libraries to register their impressions of the ILS product they use, its vendor, and the quality of support delivered. Is support getting better or worse? The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source ILS. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, it's the comments offered that provide the most insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Please help your fellow libraries who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. If you have responded to previous editions of the survey, please give your responses again this year. It's helpful to understand whether things are getting better or worse. As with the previous versions of the survey, only one response per library is allowed. While all the individuals that work in a library may have their own opinions, please respond to the extent that you can from the general experiences of your library. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding the survey.
