About Turning OFF item-type images
by Nitesh Rijal 06 Jul '10

Hello all. I tried to turn off the item type images by going to System Preferences > Admin > noitemtypeimages > ON, but it still appears in the advanced search. What may be the problem? I am using KOHA 3.00.03 in Debian Lenny Stable. Thank you. -- Nitesh Rijal BE IT rijal.it(a)gmail.com http://niteshrijal.com.np http://facebook.com/openrijal http://twitter.com/openrijal +9779841458173

Available vs restricted vs not-for-loan
by Bob Ewart 05 Jul '10

05 Jul '10

My chief librarian is trying to properly show books in the special collections area on the search page. We do have some books which are not available since they are stored off-site, usually second or third copies. Some books are rare and are not for loan, but they are available in the library. Others are restricted in that they are available and can be borrowed with the permission of the chief librarian or someone she designates. When I specify any value in field 7 (not for loan) the Location column on the search results says: 1 item No items available 1 unavailable ...Lent by permission (or some such) which my chief librarian finds confusing, since it is available How can I show the books as available for use in the library, and may be lent by permission? How do you treat reference books? They are available for reference but not for loan. -- Bob

A union catalog has been setup on Koha: http://69.164.216.175/ Currently there is 1 participating institution: South Asian Bible College This will be a union catalog of historical collections of libraries and archives from different parts of the India. This is an ongoing process, with the regular introduction of new institutions to the catalog. The project wishes to solicit contributions from libraries, organizations, historians and other scholars for this catalog. Those interested in participating can contact project members at: publicarchivesindia(a)gmail.com. More information about the project is available here: http://publicarchives.org/ Thanks, Savitra Sirohi Nucsoft OSS Labs http://www.osslabs.biz

Switching to Koha unsupported
by Keogh, Matthew 05 Jul '10

05 Jul '10

Dear all I work in a small healthcare library, based in a general hospital in west London with an expanding user-base and a diminishing budget. We need a replacement for our aging DOS based library management system, but can't afford a commercial solution. Koha seems to fit our purposes, but I would appreciate some idea of how feasible it would be to implement on our own - without using vendors such as PTFS? Two of us staff the library and we both have a reasonable level of IT literacy. We also have a supportive hospital IT department. I would be grateful if anyone could share their experience of setting up and using Koha unsupported. Many thanks for your help. Matthew Ealing Hospital Library

Re: [Koha] Koha releases
by Stacy Pober 03 Jul '10

Owen Leonard <oleonard(a)myacpl.org> wrote: >I certainly hope PTFS will not > release an update to Harley. I would hope their efforts are being put > into integrating it into the real Koha instead. A few days ago, at the Liblime Users Group meeting held at the ALA conference, customers were told that LibLime plans to merge Harley and LEK (Liblime Enterprise Koha) at some point in the future. I don't recall hearing any specific timeline for that. Liblime also displayed a policy document regarding code release of their software. I think they said it was on their website, but I can't find it right now. I just emailed them for a link or copy of it, but for now I'll give you a summary based on my memory of what was shown.. AIR, the policy says that sponsored software featureswill go through a testing cycle with the sponsoring organization, then will be released to other Liblime customers for six months. After that, the code will be released to the larger Koha world. As I understand it, most of the enhancements sponsored by one of the customer groups (the group sponsoring most of LEK features, I think) are currently contractually defined as a single project rather than individual enhancements. So until the full "bundle" of enhancements goes through the full process of testing and deployment to the other LEK customers, no part of it will be released. After the "Phase I" project is finished, which is scheduled for the end of 2010, then those enhancements will be released to other LEK users, so if there is a release of that code, it is unlikely to be prior to the middle or end of 2011. That date assumes that the project finishes on time. I believe the original date for the end of Phase one was summer, 2009, so this schedule may be overly optimistic. Since the "phase I" includes a large number of features, I asked in the meeting how long they thought it would take for those to be integrated into the official community version of Koha. The estimate I was given was four to five years. I must admit I don't really fully understand the process in which sponsored enhancements are integrated into the official Koha software. Is an evaluation done for sponsored features before they are integrated into the software? I would think the programmers involved in each release would want to evaluate them to see whether they in fact are improvements over the either the current software or whether another feature supplied by a different support vendor may accomplish the same functionality in a better way. If such evaluation is done, who does it? We have had at least one instance when we were told that a feature of official Koha would have to be sacrificed in order for a LEK feature to work correctly. I don't know whether that is going to be a common issue, but I assume that within the official Koha project, there is some decision-making protocol for deciding whether a new feature is worth more than the existing feature that it disables or worth integrating at all if there is an existing feature developed elsewhere that adds the same functionality. -- Stacy Pober Information Alchemist Manhattan College Library Riverdale, NY 10471 stacy.pober(a)manhattan.edu
