I got this via personal email and when David tried to send to list he got a message saying he's not on the list - but he has sent emails before so we're confused. Anyway, if you have ideas please reply to all: ------------ I am stuck again … I imported my copy 1s successfully a few weeks ago I am importing 545 duplicate records ALL of which are copy 2s. Every single one. I am using the 020$a field to match by ISBN but Koha is not matching any of them and considers them to be 545 unique records… =LDR 00000nam a2200000Ia 45e0 =008 00049764 =020 \\$a671506196 =082 \\$a158.1 C28 =100 \\$aCarnegie, Dale =245 \\$aHow to stop worrying and start living =245 \\$cDale Carnegie =260 \\$aNY =260 \\$c1984 =490 \\$v1 =650 \\$a1. Unable to save marc record
by sheldon_tappin 11 Aug '11

11 Aug '11

Hi All, Recently we developed a problem whilst trying to enter bibliographic records into koha. All along, the data-entry process was going fine until we got a power outage. The systems shutdown immediately. When the electricity was back on, we attempted to enter bibliographic records into the system but we couldn't. Whenever we try save a record the following error message showed: *Koha error* The following fatal error has occurred: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) at /usr/share/koha/lib/C4/Context.pm line 666. Can anyone tell me how to resolve this issue so that we can resume our data-entry process. We are hoping to commence our online service soon, and without the following error fixed we cannot move forward. Item type images in the OPAC
by Sue McMillan 11 Aug '11

11 Aug '11

Hi everyone, we are using Koha version 3.02.06.003 In the OPAC we have allowed item type images to be displayed. If there are multiple item copies attached to the biblio record the image will not display even though both items are in the same item collection. Biblio records with a single item attached do show the image. Is this a known bug or is it designed this way or possibly even a setting that we need to tweak? We would be happy for the system to show two different images if the items are in different collections. I have zebra running but still biblio searching is not working. I did rebuild zebra , the problem is still there. There is nothing in zebra-error.log and zebra-output.log for me to find the cause of the problem. Hope you can give me some input to solve this matter. Regards.

Koha on CentOS
by Msgr. Marion J. Makarewicz 10 Aug '11

10 Aug '11

I'm sure it will be possible. Check out this thread: http://lists.katipo.co.nz/public/koha/2009-May/018195.html If you haven't done so yet, visit the Koha list archives at Nabble or another web forum. It makes it easy to search the archived posts to find similar topics under discussion: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/ I did an install on Fedora as my first trial of Koha and it worked fine. At that time I was more familiar with the Red Hat Linux distributions than Debian distributions. There was less documentation available (there is the install_fedora7 doc), and a few other things on the web, but I was able to find all the packages I needed. Most challenging was getting the Perl modules installed. Don't know if that was because of Fedora or because it was really my first time to work with CPAN. Some of the modules I had to force install. Since Koha uses Apache, php, perl and MySQL and these are all available for Centos, there is nothing inherent about the OS that would prohibit it. I install Webmin as the first custom software after normal distribution updates. Then I use Webmin to configure all the server settings and manage the databases. Marion

Summary of PhD findings and a final thank you!
by Brenda Chawner 10 Aug '11

10 Aug '11

Several years ago I invited subscribers to this email discussion list to complete a Web-based survey as part of my PhD research. Since the data gathered were anonymous, I don’t know who the individual respondents were, which means I’m sending this summary of the findings to the list rather than to individuals. I am very grateful to the people who took the time to complete the survey, and provided such interesting perspectives on what factors influenced their satisfaction with a free/libre and open source software project. The abstract for the thesis is below, outlining the research method and summarising the main findings. Abstract The purpose of this research was to identify factors that affect participants’ satisfaction with their experience of a free/libre open source software (FLOSS) project. The research built on existing models of user satisfaction from the information systems literature, and also incorporated two characteristics of FLOSS projects first identified by Ye, Nakakoji, Yamamoto, and Kishida (2005), product openness and process openness. The central research question it answered was, What factors influence participant satisfaction with a free/libre and open source application software project? Richard Stallman’s reasons for setting up the GNU project and the Free Software Foundation arose from his frustration at being forced to be a passive user of software used for a Xerox printer. These suggest that being able to be an active participant in a FLOSS project is one factor that should be examined, and therefore the first sub-question this project answers is, What types of contributions do participants make to free/libre and open source software projects? Several studies have shown that the extent of participation in a FLOSS project varies from individual to individual, and this variation leads to the second sub-question, Do the factors that influence satisfaction vary for different types of participation? If so, in what way? A preliminary conceptual model of factors affecting participant satisfaction was developed, reflecting the key concepts identified in the literature. The main theoretical goal of this research was to test the model using empirical data. The research used a sequential, mixed methods approach. The first, qualitative stage involved reviewing documents from selected projects and interviewing a purposive sample of FLOSS project participants. The second, quantitative stage involved an online survey of FLOSS project participants, and the data gathered were used to test the conceptual model. The results of the first stage showed that participation in FLOSS projects was a more complex construct than previously reported in the literature. Seven distinct categories of activities were identified: * use; * interaction with code; * supporting the community; * outreach; * sponsorship; * management; and * governance. Four attributes that modified these categories were also identified: organisational focus, role formality, remuneration, and time commitment. Data from 154 responses to the online survey were used to test the model using stepwise multiple regression, which determined the effect of each of the variables on overall participant satisfaction. Moderated regression analysis was used to test the effects of three potential moderating variables. The results showed that that perceived system complexity had the largest effect, decreasing satisfaciton if respondents perceived that the software was complex, while project openness and perceived developer communication quality accounted for the most variance in satisfaction. The main theoretical contribution of this research lies in its extension of satisfaction studies to FLOSS communities, showing that communication and openness are more important than in conventional software projects. Its practical contribution will help people involved in the management and governance of FLOSS projects to identify ways of increasing their participants’ satisfaction, which may in turn encourage them to contribute more. The final version of the thesis is available in the VUW library’s research archive at: http://researcharchive.vuw.ac.nz/bitstream/handle/10063/1710/thesis.pdf?seq… Thank you again to everyone who completed the survey. OpacHiddenItems being ignored?
by Richard Hills - TechnologyWise 10 Aug '11

10 Aug '11

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me with this setting as so far no matter what I set here I am unable to exclude results from the front end search system. I have set the value of OpacHiddenItems as follows: restricted: [1] However restricted items are still coming through in results. I have also tried the value "restricted: [1,2,3]" incase it was an issue with a single item being passed through. My Koha version is: 3.4.02 Thank you. -- Richard Hills TechnologyWise Ltd, Tauranga, NZ richard(a)tw.co.nz www.technologywise.co.nz ph: +64 (0)7 571 1060 fax: +64 (0)7 571 1061

Migrating selected data - mainly books
by nreese 10 Aug '11

10 Aug '11

Hi all, I want to migrate data from an old Koha database to a 3.4.02 database. All I'm really needing is book data and where it is in the stacks. Has anyone done this and can give me some pointers on the main tables copy over and what pitfalls to look out for? Cheers, Nick Reese -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Migrating-selected-data-mainly-books-tp46… Sent from the Koha - Discuss mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
