by Lori Bowen Ayre 14 Sep '11

Apologies if everyone has seen this but I hope people from this list are participating in the survey...see below Lori ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Vandana Singh <utk.ils.research(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Sep 14, 2011 at 5:54 AM Subject: 2nd Call for Interviews about Open Source ILS To: Greetings! This is a second call for participation in an interview about Open Source Integrated Library Systems (ILS). This interview is part of a research project funded by IMLS comparing the technical support of Open Source ILS with the technical support of proprietary ILS. This is the third phase of the project. In the first phase we collected data regarding expectations of librarians for the technical support of their ILS. The second phase assessed the effectiveness of current ILS technical support. Thanks for your help if you participated in one or both of the earlier phases. We really appreciate the informative, quick and large number of responses we got!!! If you've already signed up for an interview we appreciate it. We hope you will participate in the current interviews, which will use the experience of open source software ILS adopters to develop a model for the evaluation, adoption, implementation, and maintenance of open source ILS. We would like to conduct the interview over the phone or in person and will be compensating for your time with a $25 gift card. If you know of anyone who would be interested in the study or in being interviewed please direct them to our site at http://www.oss-research.com/ where they can find out more about the project. We are interested in learning about the experiences of libraries of different types and sizes and are interested in hearing from you even if your migration to an open source ILS is not complete. If you are willing to participate, please respond to this email with the subject phrase "ILS Interview" In the same email if you could mention · The type of library (public, academic, school, special, etc.) you represent and · The approximate size of your collection. We really appreciate your time and support and look forward to reporting back the results from this study! You can also direct any queries or suggestions to utk.ils.research(a)gmail.com with the subject “ILS Interview” in the subject line, or visit our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/OSS-Lib-Tech/111245305579507. Hi All, this is my first mail to this wonderful mailing list. I read every day your messages since 3 months. A simple question about mail sending. Did anyone find a simple solution to send mails using an external smtp server with auth. I successfully upgraded sendmail to 0.79_16 and I can successfully process the holds configuring username and password. But for the other communication is not so simple, has anyone some ideas? Thanks a lot to everyone! Alessio Ruzza Biblioteca Isola di Libri Milano - Italy http://libri.nuovaacropoli.org/

sql report 952 z (non-public note)
by Chris Meech 13 Sep '11

13 Sep '11

Hi, We are using item level 952 (? or is it 942 ?) subfield z; non-public note, to store information on certain temporary collections that are loaned to us from other libraries for 3 months or so. I need an SQL report to search 952 (942?) subfield z non-public note across the database and find a specified value or any non-null value. I have been looking at adapting the Koha SQL wiki Query MARC reports with no success. Any suggestions or reports are welcome. Or if you have another way of dealing with items that are loaned to the Library from an external source I would be interested in hearing about it. Hi All For everyone who writes reports, or develops on Koha, we have a new site available to help. http://schema.koha-community.org/ This, combined with the work Nicole has been doing to add comments allows for nice information like this http://schema.koha-community.org/tables/biblio.html It is up to date with master (what will be 3.6.0 on October 22), and will continue to track master thereafter. Thanks to Robin for rediscovering SchemaSpy and to Nicole for adding comments. Chris -- Chris Cormack Catalyst IT Ltd. +64 4 803 2238 PO Box 11-053, Manners St, Wellington 6142, New Zealand

Fwd: Sorting lists carts by call number
by Chris Cormack 13 Sep '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Marie Wardall <MWardall(a)dce.k12.wi.us> Date: 13 September 2011 07:33 Subject: Sorting lists carts by call number To: koha-owner(a)lists.katipo.co.nz We are wondering if there is a way to sort a List or cart by call number? It would make going to the shelf to look for the books much easier when a teacher sends us the cart or list. I am working with Koha 3.2 and have done some testing in Koha 3.4 as well and can't seem to find a place that I am able to do this. Am I just missing something? Thanks, Marie J. Server hardware questions
by Mirko 12 Sep '11

12 Sep '11

We will get a new server for our Koha-installation. I was wondering, how important some things might be. I don't want to know what is essential to run Koha but what would be beneficial if available and what does not matter at all. Our installation now feels really slow and I hope to change that before we go live with all features. We will have around 40.000 biblios in the DB. I was thinking of a multicore CPU (probably quadcore) so we can run Zebra updates, local scripts and other things frequently and not interrupt regular use of OPAC and staff client. Does that make sense? Does Koha work well on 64bit Debian? Are the Debian packages available for 64bit? Does it make sense to have more than 2 or 3GB of RAM for Koha performance? In that case we would need a 64bit system. I'm under the impression that a lot of the "database stuff" happens in RAM, is that right? Would the use of an SSD instead of a regular hard disk be favourable (if the price does not matter)? Does it affect Koha performance? Are there other things worth considering regaring server hardware? Thank you in advance, Mirko
