For folk making travel arrangements to Edinburgh expecially from outwith the UK, its worth noting that the 4th and 5th of June are public/bank holidays in the UK which tend to impact travel. Moving fields from tag to tag
by Stefano Bargioni 09 Mar '12

09 Mar '12

Hi, I need to change about 4000 records, moving a repeatable tag to another. Is there a tool to do this? Also a private Perl script can be useful to me. Zeno T. says there is a work in progress script for Koha 3.8. No way for me to find it in Bugzilla. Thanks. Stefano

Fwd: [LIS-Forum] Mysore University Koha OPAC on Mobile
by SANDEEP BHAVSAR 09 Mar '12

09 Mar '12

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ishwar Goudar <goudarishwar(a)googlemail.com> Date: Thu, Mar 8, 2012 at 7:39 PM Subject: [LIS-Forum] Mysore University OPAC on Mobile To: lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in, francis(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Dear Professionals, I am happy inform you all that our University Library Web OPAC has gone the * mobile way*. We have adopted open source library automation system KOHA for all our house keeping activities including OPAC and the same has been made available in cloud hosting environment. Anybody can access our OPAC on *Mobile* at site http://mopac.mysore-univ.org/ To see what it looks like in a mobile phone, please use following site on your desktop/laptop: http://iphonetester.com/?url=http://mopac.mysore-univ.org/ Apple claims to have sold record number of Smart-phones smashing the the record of PC sales. The same has been the fate with Laptops and notebooks. ( http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/smartphone-sales-exceed-those-of-pcs-fo… ) Internet access through Mobile has become the order of the day. This being the case, I strongly feel that all of us should go the mobile way for our OPACs. Our patrons can use their mobile for reserving, renewing the documents and all related activities. We are working towards using Mobile SMSs for overdue reminders, informing the availability of reserved documents, documents purchased against requests, broadcasting important library related messages, etc. The automation model we have adopted is *-* Centralised database, decentralised inputting/ housekeeping activities and Universal access to OPAC. Once completed the OPAC will have > 10 Lakh records of documents available in colleges, institutes, PG Centres and various departments, which are directly under the control of Mysore University. We acknowledge OSS Labs, Bangalore for having given quality, timely and cost effective service to us in this matter. Probably ours is the first university library to go mobile way for OPAC (?). Please have a look at it and give your feedback, enabling us to improve the service. Regards, Dr. I.R.N. z39.50 and holdings
by Seaman, Graham 09 Mar '12

09 Mar '12

Hi I need to query a Koha Z39.50 server (not one I manage or have access to). Bibliographic queries work fine, but I would also like to be able to retrieve holdings and availability data for items. Is it possible to set the Koha Z39.50 server to return Opac format, or return holdings data in any other way? Once I have some idea of what can be done I will approach the systems librarian and ask him if it can be set up, but I don't want to ask if it's not possible! Thanks for any advice Graham

Fwd: Koha questions!

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Catherine Murphy <Catherine.Murphy(a)marist.edu> Date: 7 March 2012 13:53 Subject: Koha questions! To: koha-owner(a)lists.katipo.co.nz Hello, My supervisor asked me to look at Koha and compare its features with our current ILS (Voyager). We had seen a support company's version of Koha a few years back and I started using this company's version for the comparison. Are support company versions of Koha part of the Koha open source community? How different is LibLime Koha from other open source Koha? How many libraries use Koha currently? How many academic institutions? Are most Koha sites hosted? Are any academic institutions maintaining their own open source Koha and working with the Koha community? Is there a list of features Koha offers, compared to traditional ILS? Re: [Koha] Edinburgh tourist tax
by Dianna Roberts 08 Mar '12

08 Mar '12

Hi MJ, I believe you are right in correcting me on this one as after further investigation I see that it is still only a proposal. I had misinterpreted what the 20% tax was referring to, not realising that it was in fact VAT. Thanks for the clarification, and the reminder that I should be able to claim a refund! Regards, Dianna Date: Thu, 08 Mar 2012 10:39:49 +0000 From: MJ Ray <mjr(a)phonecoop.coop> To: koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz Subject: Re: [Koha] Edinburgh tourist tax Message-ID: <E1S5alB-0006bJ-JB(a)petrol.towers.org.uk> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 "Dianna Roberts" <Dianna.Roberts(a)opus.co.nz> > Be aware that Edinburgh applies a tourist tax to all hotel bookings at the > rate of 20% per night. I discovered this when making a booking last night. Are you sure? A ?2-a-night tax has been suggested but reports say city governments don't have the legal powers to raise such a tax: http://www.eturbonews.com/26930/minister-edinburghs-planned-tourist-tax-not- legal The current UK rate of Value Added Tax is 20%, which might be what that was. To individuals, VAT behaves pretty much like a sales tax, but I believe the law is that you must show tax-included prices to them - and non-EU visitors can claim a tax refund when you leave. More on this at http://wikitravel.org/en/United_Kingdom#Shopping - other than that, VAT is evil because it taxes the poor more than the rich, but our shiny-faced leader shows no sign of changing it in the budget later this month, so a tax cut would be a surprise. If you spot any Edinburgh sites that aren't aimed at business sales quoting VAT-excluded prices, let us (software.coop) know and we'll report them to local customer protection agents. Anyway, if there is now a tourist tax, let me know more and I'll update our notes, but I'm pretty sure there isn't one yet. Hope that explains, -- MJ Ray (slef), member of www.software.coop, a for-more-than-profit co-op. http://koha-community.org supporter, web and library systems developer. Re: [Koha] [Koha-devel] Retrieving 10-digit ISBNs in a report
by Cab Vinton 08 Mar '12

08 Mar '12

Thank you, Nick! We're hosted by Equinox, so getting that php code in place would take a bit of extra work for us. I'm now thinking that we may better off just using a custom field for this purpose. If we stick w/ Amazon, their ASIN would be the best way to go. This is the ISBN for most books, but something else entirely when dealing with movies & certain other items. Yet another step in our cataloging workflow ... Then again, there are other options for book covers, so I'll be looking into Google Books, LibraryThing, etc. If folks have specific thoughts on this, I'd be happy to hear them. Many thanks again, Cab Vinton, Director Sanbornton Public Library Sanbornton, NH Life is short. Read fast!
