Servers for US Libraries
by glaws 03 Oct '12

http://home.techsoup.org/Stock/Pages/Category.aspx?category=servers-nonprof… Just a note for US libraries* needing a good Koha server at a good price--Techsoup sometimes has good refurbished servers (and workstations too). If you do get servers or workstations with Windows preinstalled, _typically_ the grant requirements do not prevent you from removing it and installing Linux. They also have networking equipment and other hardware. Donated items come and go, so you need to keep checking back if you don't see something you need. * I believe that there is a Techsoup for Canada too, but I'm not familiar with it. http://www.techsoupcanada.ca -- Greg Lawson Network Administrator Rolling Hills Consolidated Library 1912 N. A new open source project on Drupal related to sigb (and so koha)
by Claire Hernandez 03 Oct '12

03 Oct '12

Hello, I am pleased to announce that we contributed a new drupal module called opac: http://drupal.org/project/opac Announcement is here: http://drupal.biblibre.com/en/blog/entry/biblibre-contributes-the-drupal-op… evolves a lot but you can begin to test it and give us feedbacks :) The first sigb we connected is, of course, koha. It is an other way to provide opac and others things around, it is and independant full project related to whatever sigb you want. I would like to introduce a difficulty we encounted: we wanted to build on top of Ils-di but not everything can be done with it (and we found some bugs). We wonder how to expose koha services to build a significant drupal site. Ncip2 is not sufficient for us, so we've made a choice. For the moment, we are building a Koha::REST interface. The project is published http://git.biblibre.com/?p=koha-restful;a=summary but not yet submitted to the community. You can have a look and tell us what you think. If you want to send us patches, please do it, if you prefer I could clone it in github but the risk is that the project wont be up to date everyday. Regards, Claire.

My +1 to Vimal. A live CD/DVD is the best solution for testing Koha, leave a simple installation to new users for evaluation, and so on. Re: [Koha] Remastersys incompatibility?

Dear Friends, Many libraries with small collection run on Koha Live CDs. Small libraries (in terms of collection, manpower and money) cant afford online hosting and servers for production purpose. They made use Koha Live CD for the installation on their ordinary PC. I agree that Koha Live CD is not suitable for libraries with big collection and lot of transactions. I know many college libraries in Kerala with above 50000 records successfully running on Koha Live CD. I think they will move to a server when collection become big. They take regular backup as a security measure. Regards, -- Vimal Kumar V. Avoid LiveCDs/LiveDVDs

Dear Mark Tompsett, I do not agree with your comments on Koha live CD/DVD's. I am using Koha 3.8.2 Live CD released by Mr. Vimal Kumar, it is working fine. Most of the library professionals are may not familiar with Linux to install Koha along with supporting software's. This type of Live CD/DVD's are most useful to easy installation of Linux/Ubuntu & Koha. Regards, Venkat

Dear David, Thank you for your response, I installed Koha couple months back and everything has been working without problem. I installed Koha 3.8 from common package on Debian 6+, I can not think why config-files should disappear from the system.
