Hello

23 Feb '13

Recently I subscribed to the list, and the welcome message suggested a short post introducing myself so I thought I would do that. I hope I am using the right address! I am a cataloger at Iowa Library Services, the agency formerly (and sort of still) known as the State Library of Iowa. We are a division under the State Department of Education. The new name reflects a reorganization that brought a formerly separate, statewide commission of regional library service areas and us together into the same agency. We run a depository program for State of Iowa government publications and my main job is to catalog them. It is mostly original cataloging but some copy cataloging as well. I also handle anything else that turns up needing original cataloging and I do some work with retrospective projects in the State Law Library collections. The reason for joining the list is that we are in the process of transitioning our catalog from Sirsi/Dynix Horizon to Koha. We have been learning quite a bit but there is a lot yet to learn and a lot of work ahead of us for a successful conversion. I have some questions right now that I am thinking of posting to the list but plan to peruse the archives a little more first to see if I can find some of what I need there. Koha seems very cool so far and we are looking forward to being in the community, even with all the work it will take to get there! MARC import problem
by Elaine Bradtke 22 Feb '13

22 Feb '13

We've done a few imports before, and never encountered this particular puzzle. In Koha 3.10.02. We imported a batch of 709 records - and it all seemed to proceed as normal. In Manage staged MARC records it says status Imported, # records 709 We re-indexed, and ran links bibs to authorities as usual But when I search for any of these new records, they are not found. By going through the manage MARC import tool, I can look at the records by clicking on the biblionumber, everything appears to be in order, the authorities have linked, the item records are present. . . but no matter how I search for them, they are never found. Just out of curiosity, I went and edited the first record and then saved it. It still doesn't come up when I search for it. Is this some sort of indexing problem? -- Elaine Bradtke Data Wrangler VWML English Folk Dance and Song Society | http://www.efdss.org Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent's Park Road, London NW1 7AY Tel +44 (0) 20 7485 2206 (This number is for the English Folk Dance and Song Society in London, England. Using Learnist for Koha demos
by Dianna Roberts 21 Feb '13

21 Feb '13

I'm considering using Learnist http://learni.st/category/featured#/category/featured <http://learni.st/category/featured%23/category/featured> as a means of teaching people how to use electronic resources and wondered if anyone is using it to demonstrate using Koha. I know that one of you has a Learnist board called 'Never underestimate the importance of books and libraries' which is a delight to read, but I'm looking for something more formally educational. 740 analytical title does not display
by Hillyard, Cecil 21 Feb '13

21 Feb '13

Hi All, The 740 analytical titles do not display anywhere in the normal display of our bib records. We use these a lot in conjunction with series. They do show up in the ISBD display (not well but they are there) The frameworks are set up with the 740a being not hidden 0. Is there a way to get them to show in the normal display and in the OPAC? We are on Koha 3.08.05 Thank you, __________________________ Cecil Hillyard Cataloger Washoe County Library Technical Services Reno, NV 89505 www.washoecountylibrary.us

multiple installation
by Aleya Munira 21 Feb '13

21 Feb '13

Hello I'm trying to run multiple libraries with koha (standard installation of koha 3.08.09.tar.gz) on a single server & single installation of koha (Debian squeeze Linux Based). I’ve used koha common package for necessary perl module. Then I've change of the necessary section of conf file and virtual host. Now the problem arises in the searching of the OPAC and Staff Client. All the opac shows the same search result though I've rebuild them differently. Actually it shows the last rebuild index on searching. Any fruitful suggestion on this regards?

Posting the message below for David Hartman, who's having trouble sending mail to the list. Please respond to the list or to him directly at David.W.Hartman(a)disney.com . Is there a way Koha can search for these terms accurately? I heard there is a bug report but I did not see it. David W. Why holds on restricted items?
by Marcel de Rooy 21 Feb '13

21 Feb '13

Hi, Does anyone know why I can place a hold on an biblio with items that have use restrictions (952$5 ) ? You can even confirm the hold. So a mail goes out: Waiting for you.,etc. But note that such items cannot be checked out. What would be the use of placing and confirming holds on items you cannot check out? Perhaps I am missing something? Did not see any reference in the manual either. Regards, Marcel

Subject tracing help
by Charles Hill 21 Feb '13

21 Feb '13

Hello, I am having trouble getting the tracing of subjects the way I would like. We are running v. 3.8 and have UseAuthoritiesForTracings set to 'Don't use' and 'TraceSubjectSubdivisions' set to 'Include' and are using the Zebra index. However, whenever a subject tracing is clicked in the OPAC, it searches by the linked authority record, and does not include the subdivisions. Might we have other system preferences conflicting, have I wholly misunderstood the function of these system preferences, or might this just be an irregularity with our system? I would like to allow our users to be as granular as they would like with subject tracings. Any ideas are appreciated. Records not showing in OPAC and multiple biblionumbers
by Elaine Bradtke 20 Feb '13

20 Feb '13

Koha 3.10.02 We have set up 942n to have two choices Hide in OPAC and Show in OPAC. The record suppression has been working fine until recently. The staff member who checks and unsuppresses records says there are a bunch which have accumulated that remain hidden, even after he's changed the field to Show. If I run a search on suppress=1(the code for hide in OPAC) they come up. Looking closer at these records, it turns out they have multiple 999c fields Here's an example: 942 ## - ADDED ENTRY ELEMENTS (KOHA) 2 Source of classification or shelving scheme VWML c Koha [default] item type Components n Hide in OPAC Show in OPAC h Call number QS 40 999 ## - SYSTEM CONTROL NUMBERS (KOHA) c Koha biblionumber 18235 c Koha biblionumber 18235 | 14922 c Koha biblionumber 14922 If I delete the extra 999c fields the record will unsuppress. However, I think this may be part of some other problem, but I'm not sure if it's an indexing error, or what. The actual biblionumber is 18235. But when I search on that biblionumber I get two nearly identical records: one is 18235 and one is 18235 | 14922 The difference between the two is in the 999c field We sometimes combine bliblios when we find duplicates, and this may be the source of the double number. Any ideas what might be causing it, and what I should do to correct it? Should I file a bug, or is this an internal setting gone awry? -- Elaine Bradtke Data Wrangler VWML English Folk Dance and Song Society | http://www.efdss.org Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent's Park Road, London NW1 7AY Tel +44 (0) 20 7485 2206 (This number is for the English Folk Dance and Song Society in London, England.
