Barcode population/import
by tony.h 18 Jun '14

Greetings, Apparently, I'm missing something in the documentation that should be common to many library setups: Importing or creating barcodes * Using an ISBN list, we have successfully used MarcEdit to build the MARC records from the LOC * We inturn imported the .mrc file into Koha * However, without the barcodes, we can't checkin/checkout any books * We could manually edit each item and enter it (painful!). Or we could write some SQL code to enter it based on the matching ISBN number, but I read that the Zebra indexing needs to be rebuilt following that. Which leads me to believe that there is an easier way... Questions: What are the best options for going about this? 1) Does Koha have an auto-barcode generation tool? If so, where is it? 2) What is the procedure for importing a list of barcodes that correspond to the matching ISBN number? Re: [Koha] How to handle a temporarily closed branch?

Hi, I'm not sure that it responds to the need, but we use the syspref OpacHiddenItems to hide the results of one branch : homebranch: [MON] After we use jquery in opacuserjs to hide this entry : $("#branchloop option[value='branch:MON']").remove(); Sonia Message: 6 Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2014 19:26:25 -0400 From: Nick Rosasco <nsr(a)etome.net> To: "koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz" <koha(a)lists.katipo.co.nz> Subject: Re: [Koha] How to handle a temporarily closed branch? As in, should they not be shown in search results, etc? This could impact some other logic if those branches need to completely disappear... Oslo Public Library needs to close some of its branches every now and then. How are y'all handling that in Koha? ... Anyone got any thoughts on this? Better ways to do it? Angles we are missing? Magnus, Currently, what we do for our schools during the summer is... 1) Hide the schools from being chosen as pickup locations. Here is an example of our jQuery for a single branch: Staff jQuery: $("#pickup option[value='SILVERHILL'],select[name='pickup'] option[value='SILVERHILL']").hide(); OPAC jQuery: $("option[value='SILVERHILL']").hide(); 2) Update the holds policies under the circulations rules for that library to No Holds Allowed for each type you use. This works pretty well, except that currently Next Available Holds are not honoring this rule. I've reported this in a bug. Christopher Brannon

How to handle a temporarily closed branch?
by Magnus Enger 16 Jun '14

16 Jun '14

Hi! Oslo Public Library needs to close some of its branches every now and then. How are y'all handling that in Koha? Our idea so far is twofold: 1. Make it possible to mark a branch as closed and have the effect of this be that the library can not be selected as a pickup location when placing a hold. (This could either be a checkbox saying "this branch is now closed", or it could be a from date and a to date, in which case the library would be disabled as a pickup location between these dates.) 2. Create a new value for the NOT_LOAN authorized value, e.g. 3 = "Branch closed". Then we would create a plugin or a new tool to make it easy to update the "Not for loan" status of all items connected to the given branch, that has a 0 value for the "Not for loan" data. (And make it equally easy to go back the other way when the library is open again.) (This could perhaps also be combined: Make it possible to set dates for closing and opening, and then have a script that is run every night that checks if any libraries are due to be opened or closed, and then updates the "Not for loan" values accordingly.) Anyone got any thoughts on this? Better ways to do it? Angles we are missing? Best regards, Magnus Enger Oslo Public Library

On strange "Auto-RE :" mails to Koha-forum
by zolot 16 Jun '14

16 Jun '14

Dear BWS Johnson ! This is your letter to me: _____________________________________________________ Salvete! > 1) why not in English (recollect that the working language of Koha-forum is > English), The language is the preference of the user. One is more likely to get a reply in English than Chinese, but there *are* Chinese users. I'd rather not disenfranchise anyone based on their language. Cheers, Brooke _____________________________________________________ You are right almost in everything (як усі люди !!!) . Even because you left regardless the following part of my report: << 2) why 'auto-RE:', i.e. you use an answering machine or a robot (what is your purpose?)>>. However, see, please, http://lists.katipo.co.nz/mailman/listinfo/koha Look a next to last line. It is written there: " Which language do you prefer to display your message ? - English (USA) " You will pay attention that "English (USA)" does NOT have an ALTERNATIVE !!! I find that this decision of the forum organizers is EXPEDIENT. And in relation to languages - I envy those people which know many languages. Особливо тим, хто володіє китайською мовою (хоча б із словником). Хто віднесеться із розумінням до Ваших email-ів на Коха-форум , якщо вони будуть написані, наприклад, латиною !!! That is all. "Cheers" are not obligatory. Gennady PS: I continue to get the answers of the "Chinese robot" for my letters to the Koha-forum. What do you think about it ? Did you see this "Auto-RE :"-emails ? As a list member of the Koha-forum, you should see such emails in your mailbox.

Hi Robin, I made some modifications to the authority-koha-indexdefs.xml file before importing auth and biblio records and, after some good clues provided by Bernardo Gonzalez Kriegel, I'm going to do a fresh install without modifying anything to see what happens when run link_bibs_to_authorities.pl. I'll give you the feedback.
