We looked into this (not sure what your definition of "larger database" is -- our dumps are around 670 Megs) and decided to go the hardware route using solid state drives for both the db and the backups. End result, we have less than 4 seconds "downtime" for a daily cron-job which (so far, touch wood) has not given rise to any complaints. Note that we "clean" the db before dumping, specifically sessions (with the spiders we seem to get >100,000 / 24 hours despite blocking Baidu at the firewall) and imports (our cataloguers can get very busy) -- the mail, logs (we retain only 10 days) and zebraqueue appear to be less substantial -- which saves between 50 and 100 Megs. Question about Item Type listings in Facets of search results
by Jesse Lambertson 08 Jan '16

08 Jan '16

Hello everyone, I am experiencing some slightly odd behaviour regarding search results. I am getting a list of results with two IDENTICAL listings in the facets under item-type. Say, for instance, I am searching in Arabic for the term شعر (which is "poetry", or poems). I get back a number of results and on the left is a list of item-types. All my resources in poetry in Arabic are books. So, I get two different facet break downs for a search result of 61. 1. BOOK (60 results) & 2. BOOK (1 result) All have the correct item type coded at the bib-level in 942 as BOOK and all the items have the correct authorized vale for item type at the item-level as BOOK. What might be causing this strange split and two different item-type-facets which should be identical? At first, I thought it might have something to do with the fact that that one had a genre/form heading in the record but those around it in the search did not. But, no, plenty others in the result list have genre/form headings added too. Thoughts, suggestions? Thank you, Jesse -- Jesse A Lambertson Librarian Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center <http://www.sqcc.org/> jlambertson(a)sqcc.org عالم الانجازات ينحاز دوماً مع المتفائلين

mysqldump (koha-dump)
by Barry Cannon 07 Jan '16

07 Jan '16

Hello, I am curious how many people use the koha-dump script to dump their Koha database? I am particularly interested to know how people are dealing with larger databases where mysqldump causes table locking. I would typically suggest using the '--single-transaction' option but I notice there is still one table, pending_offline_operations, that isn't using InnoDB as it's storage engine. Best practice is to use 'lock-tables' in this instance (mysqldump locks by default) but with a larger database this can cause a non responsive interface for the duration of the backup. We have sites where the one system is used by users in different time zones, this causes a headache as "out-of-hours" doesn't exist. LVM snapshots would be useful but prove tricky when using hosting providers. Any suggestions would be welcome!
