Serials and Koha

We've long known that Koha[1] needs solid support for serials[2], but up to this point haven't been willing to commit the resources to work on it for fear of gettin it wrong. We're ready to change that. Koha now sports a group of nearly 30 developers, many of whom are quite active. There's also a large group of libraries around the world who are using Koha, along with many others who are looking seriously at it. We'd like to combine the strengths of these groups to develop between two and five serials modules for Koha. These modules should provide serials support ranging from very simple for small libraries (public schools and the like) up to very complete solutions for large libraries. My plan at this point is as follows: through 31 Jan 2003 -- hold an open discussion at koha2010(a)kohalabs.com[3] about the functional needs of a serials module. This discussion can (should) include dividing functionality among the various modules, but should not be a technical discussion about how to implement the functionality 1 Feb 2003 through 28 Feb 2003 -- create a series of design specs for the modules. This discussion will occur (mostly) on the koha-devel(a)lists.sourceforge.net[4] mailing list. Periodic drafts will be posted to the koha(a)mail.katipo.co.nz[5] and koha2010(a)kohalabs.com mailing list for feedback. 1 Mar 2003 on -- work on developing the modules. The simplest module will be the first target, with others folowing based on interest from the developer and user communities. If one or more libraries would like to sponsor the development of a specific module out of sequence, or a developer or company would like to develop one of the modules, that would be fine -- we'd ask that any development be done 'in the open' with CVS access provided to the other Koha developers. -pate ps Please feel free to redistribute this ... Two items that've come up a bit recently are a need for more and better administration tools and a reorganization of the Koha source code. The first should help make Koha much easier for a library to manage, allowing changes to be made without having to dive into the database itself. The second should help the developers by cleaning up the structure they have to work with every time they fix a bug or add a feature. I'm anxious to see the fruits of both efforts. Community: Paul has started a french language complement to the koha-translate mailing list. His comments are pertinent: when a developper modifies a template (which happends yesterday from me), i think translators should be informed. As translators are not necessary following the koha-cvs ml, i think we should create a koha-translate ml, for translators. note : i'm happy to announce creation of traduction(a)koha-fr.org for french translators and technique(a)koha-fr.org for french developpers. The main translation list can be subscribed to from: http://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/koha-translate France: Nicolas Morin has talked to two libraries in New Caladonia who are starting to work with Koha. He'll be releasing a longer article about it shortly, but here are some of the highlights: * the first library has two branches 12 kms apart, amounting to 600 meters square (1800 meters square in 2005), 35000 documents, with a yearly increase of 5000 ocuments. It's run by a team of 10 people. A small library, but growing steadily. * the second library is run by a 38 people strong team, has 74000 documents, did 260.000 transactions in 2001. Both libraries are jointly considering the switch to Koha. Among their motives, they listed: * the GPL license that would allow them to install Koha in rural and often poor areas that could not pay for a proprietary system, and thus increasing the value of their network * the openness of the source code, that would allow local businesses or the university computer people to support the system Both libraries will evaluate Koha and test it in the coming months. Meanwhile Christophe Augias, head of the second library, couldn't wait and got involved in the french translation team... Documentation: I need technical proofing volunteers (particularly people who have just done installs) for comment on the next version of the manual. Another attempt to make sure I've got every contributor in the CREDITS will occur after the tech proofread. Set up Fines/Charges?

I just completed installing Koha on an E-Smith 5.5 Server. I am trying to figure out how/where to set fines and how it will calculate them. I would also like to know how to set a the default due period. Jeffery A. A problem installing Koha 1.3.2

The December issue of American Libraries, the magazine of the American Library Association, has a feature article by David Dorman called "Open Source Software and the Intellectual Commons." Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be available online . . . Dorman argues that Open Source is not a fad, but a "fundamental trend that fulfills some very basic economic, cultural, ethical, and political needs." He mentions Koha in the very first paragraph: "There is even an Open Source library management system -- Koha -- in general release for smaller libraries." Koha for my classroom library

Hi All, I am a 5th grade classroom teacher in Boston, MA, USA. I have a classroom library of about 2000 books and a teacher library of about 15 sets of 25 books each.I loan and manage these books. I am fairly skilled at using packaged software but get frustrated when I need to know more technical knowledge to adapt or correct a software problem. I have never worked with open source software. I am looking for some folks who may have developed a classroom library system using Koha who could advise me on jumping into using it for my situation. My big question is: How much time will it take and are there folks out there to help me? I want to develop a system that will: 1. Keep track of basic borrowing, inventory, and returns, 2. Keep a history record for each borrower so I can check on a students reading habits over a full year, 3. Be compatible with an ISBN # or other database that will assist with entering books. I hope to find a database that will also provide data that will allow me to sort books at various reading levels, 4. be able to print and use barcodes for inventory control. Please let me know if you have some experience with this work, especially in the States with databases of US published books.
