preliminary info about Koha needed

I have been asked by a small temple to automate the library system their. The system they are currently using has been made by a total dumb wit using MySQL as backend and VB for creating the frontend. THe code and the database organization is so bad it can bring tears to the most stone hearted of the developers. Anyways after doing some research on Freshmeat, I came across Koha and was struck by the elegance of the system. After I showed them Koha, they were very willing to shift their whole system to GNU/Linux and start using Koha. However as I do not know much about a Libray system I wanted to clear a few doubts about Koha before moving the existing system. If you can just point me the relevant web pages I will try to work out the rest myself. - Can the book numbers be generated by Koha? The librarian at the temple too has not much idea of managing the library, he is doing it as a social service. The library has started only a few days back and they have not numbered the books. So they do not have any preferences as to which system is used to give numbers to the book. - Some of the books have been donated. Can these be shown seperately when an inventory record is generate? re barcode software and koha

We have recently installed koha for our small library. 1. Is it possible to record borrowings without using a barcode. I couldn't get it to do this. 2. Hello, Are you looking for a something to produce the actual barcodes with which to label the books, the hardware to scan in the barcodes, or both? Mike

Open Source Book

Hi Everyone, Currently there is a book being written about open source, specifically a book aimed at decision makers, such as IT executives, about the benefits of open source. The books development has been organized and sponsored by the New Zealand Open Source Society. If there is anyone on this list who is involved with the development of Koha, and would like to write a description of the Koha project as a case study in open source development and cooperation in government I would very much appreicate it. Z3950 Problems

I have Koha running on a Sparc platform on Solaris 8. But everytime I try to start the z3950-daemon-launch.sh script it fails after a few seconds with the following error. su: Unknown id: /usr/appl/www/koha/intranet/scripts/z3950daemon/z3950-daemon-shell.sh I've tried just about everything, can't figure out what I'm missing. Need Help

I am a novice linux user so I might need simpler explanations, I am running Gentoo Linux and I can install koha but I cannot access the system through the browser. I have koha 1.9 installed I get an error 403, permission denied. I have configured my apache.conf to be set up like the one in the Koha Hints. I can access localhost which displays the apache startup page, I set the OPAC for 8000 and the intranet for 8080, both of which state permission denied. Thanks Stephen
