Which ISBN is searched for by Z39.50 ?

Hi again, when I used to have a Z39.50 daemon working under RedHat 9.0 with a 1.x version of Koha, I noticed that I could _NOT_ search ISBNs in the format 978...X. That is, I had to delete the trailing 978 (for "Bookland") and edit the last ("control") digit, from the 13-digits string usually produced by a barcode scanner. E.g., 9780486650159 should be edited to 0486650154. ^^^ ^ ^^^ ^ I think this is a bit unconvenient. Since I am a newbie to Koha, I wonder whether this is a feature or a bug: which way should one enter one's ISBNs, with or without the trailing 978? Thanks again. Giuseppe.

Hi Gerry, I'll put this on the list for additions to a Koha _2.2_ on Debian manual ... the document you refer to is mainly for Koha 2.0 installations. There is a document that should be available very soon entitled "Installing Koha 2.2 on Fedora Core" ... it's written and just waiting for some XML markup before it's posted to kohadocs.org. Weird behaviour?

Hi every body !!!! Hope you had enjoyed christmas.We have some things that are not clear, maybe you can help us. Our library has two branches, each branch has in it's collections books, magazines, CDs (audio and software) and and Video recordings (mostly VHS, some other formats). We are using frameworks and modified the bulkmarcimport to make it aware of the frameworks. Now when we catalog a new item koha uses the proper framework. We noticed in the OPAC search when we look for a video that the director's name doesn't appear, and some anoyances like that. Since the mapping between Non-Marc and Marc are unique I can't stablish different bindings for different kind of item, the author of a book goes to a different field that the director of a movie. Is anybody expiriencing something like this ? any suggestion? Thanks Andres

Hi, I'm playing with the marc subfields editor and I have one doubt, how does the "link" field work? I've used it and after running a bulkmarcimport I'm having some strange results. The help page sais: "link: useless for instance", but, what was it for? Thanks Ernesto

Two new documents have been loaded on http://www.kohadocs.org: "Updating Koha" and "Backups and Restoring," both by Joshua Ferraro. They are available there as DocBook XML source trees, as well as html versions and pdf versions derived from the xml sources. There are times when having the same barcode assigned to different records might be useful. Here at the Lunar and Planetary Institute I create a catalog record for special issues of journals, an analytic. For example, a recent issue of Astrophysics and Space Science was a special issue with the title Magnetic fields and star formation : theory versus observations. I created a separate catalog record for that, however, it will be bound in a volume with other issues of and given a barcode for the bound volume. It is very possible there may be another special issue in that bound volume. All those bib records would be tied to the one volume on the shelf with the one bar code. Presently, I do not assign a bar code to the analytic records. It would be nice to assign the same one to all and then our users could see if the special issue was on the shelf or not. Now they have to do another search on the title of the journal and check there. When there is such a parent-child relationship between items it is possible to use the same barcode for multiple bibliographic records. Salve! library or library branch have a unique series of barcodes. If you are using an alphanumeric symbology such as Code 39 (also called Code 3 of 9) you can use the library or branch holding symbol as the prefix to the code. e.g. Sembeq, a small French Baptist Seminary has a holding symbol assigned by the National Libray of Canada of QMSB, and their barcodes start at QMSB00001. Patron Barcodes contain the student ID code that has letters from their last name and first initial followed by up to 4 digits. This is interesting. Theoretically if Koha can handle an alphanumeric barcode, there isn't necessarily any problem. What I mean is that instead of retrospectively reapplying a jillion barcodes, you can simply assign the branches an A and B prefix. It doesn't take very long to type and as you said, the computer fix is very simple indeed. That is even if the hard copy on the book barcode read 1234 at branch A and 1234 at branch B You could make the computer hold A1234 and B1234 and upon circulation, either type or have a check digit added to reflect the branch status. When books were swapped between branches, you would have to remember that. With the natural course of new acquisitions, which would have the proper barcode in hard copy on them, and weeding, where old books which did not would be discarded, it would eventually roll over. I do agree that the preferred method would certainly be to reapply proper barcodes, but this could be a quick fix if Koha will recognise alphanumerics. Cheers, Brooke @ Hinsdale MA

2.2.0 official and online help

Hello koha folks, As announced, the official 2.2.0 should be out on january, 3rd or 4th. There is a little thing missing in our preferred ILS : ONLINE HELP The parameters section is done (thanks to nelsonville guys) The member section is done (thanks to BWS johnson) The new modules are documented (serials & for example, thanks to me) Catalogue is partially done Acquisition is not done So if some of you have a CVS of 2.2.0RCx installation somewhere and some minuts, don't hesitate to write some help. Post it on this mailing list or on the wiki (www.koha.org/wiki) i'll take care of it when i'm back Just be carefull some help exist on the CVS that is not on the wiki. If you have a 2.2.0RCx, you have all the existing doc, except member section that has been provided recently by BWS johnson. Salve! My .02 on having Koha accept two same barcodes - bad pie! That's one of the things I intentionally checked for when I installed. Perhaps there's a way to do a feature so that folks that don't want barcodes can shut it off, but I shudder to think at the possible multiple barcode errors that might haunt me later. I know it will catch multiple borrower ids in its own comma'd way, and I know that it used to yell at me when I used the same barcode, which I liked. As far as what you might be able to do about your branches - talk to your vendor and consortium about adding initial digits to distinguish between the branch and the main library.
