Dear fellow list members, (I am sending this again because the formatting appeared messed up in the last message I sent). In am interested in installing Koha onto a web hosting account and not on a home computer. I decided to try Bluehost because I saw that they allowed editing the php.ini file and so figured that they might be my best shot at getting Koha installed on subscription account that I could afford. Other than wondering if anyone else has been successful in doing so with any web site hosting companies I request feedback on the following. After finding out that that Bluehost (www.bluehost.com) uses Fedora I emailed the Bluehost tech support the Install file and asked them to look it over and tell me if I could install it in my web hosting account as part of a web site. (Though the Install instructions were dated from 2005 I was hoping that they would be sufficient). Bellow is the the response email I recieved from the Bluehost tech support staff. First though, here are my questions in relation to their response: A) are there substitute Perl modules that I can install because Bluehost says that they can only install modules when there is a "stable version" of them? E.g.: 1)Sendmail v0.79 <-- Bluehost says that it is not in a stable release and so they won't install it. What can I do about this? 2)Net::Z3950 v0.51 <-- I looked this one up and it is outdated by a replacement. Since this was written in 2005 then perhaps I can use the replacement instead? What can I do about this. B) In short: would someone please give me a list of what I should ask the web hosting company (in this case Bluehost) to install? in gratitude, Truth C. Patron is not added

Dear all Firstly I have installed koha ver. 2.2.8 with following configurations: Microsoft window 2000. Apachi 2.0.59, Mysql 5.0 & Perl 5.8.8 build 817 Then filling all the information in Add New Patron and click on add in this patron it is not storing. Only filed names are showing not field values. When I try to solve this problem go to mail list and read the mail http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/koha-win32/2007-04/msg00009.html and follows this mail instructions and change line memberentry.pl, 217 from my %flags = ('gonenoaddress' => ['gna', 'Gone no address'], to my %flags = ('gonenoaddress' => ['gonenoaddress', 'Gone no address'], But Patron is not added and I don't understanding topic "Date problems adding new members" ( http://lists.katipo.co.nz/public/koha/2007-April/011525.html) My problem is data is not added in Add new patron. Plz help and guide me Vikas Salunkhe

Koha Installed on Linux Server - Interface Problems

Hello Colleagues, Through a lot of pestering to our IT staff, we finally managed to have them install KOHA on a server (LINUX) for us. We have been provided with a public IP address for the system, meaning that I can access the cataloging and OPAC features from other systems. I noticed one problem though. The version that is isntalled has the interface of version 2.2. When I check the ABOUT file in KOHA, it says that it is 2.2.8. Basing it that, I do firmly believe that we do have the 2.2.8 version, just that the IT people probably installed it over the 2.2, the version that they were probably testing some months ago. I know that you can change the template in the parameters, but so far I have been unsuccessful. Any directions how to exactly do so would be appreciated. Cheers, Joel.

Hello, Hey I saw Kyle Hall beat me to setting up a Koha VMWARE Image. I think of 2.2.9. I tried to start the torrent, but nothing came over, 0 peers. I am not a torrent expert, but it would seem at least one peer is needed for the torrent. Kyle, if you can get me this, I can leave a torrent up much of the day. I still may do this myself, I was going to try Fedora, it worked before as a test. I foolishly scrapped the VMWARE image as I was just getting into VMWARE and I have another install on a real machine. Still, this could be a useful way to distribute Koha as VMWARE is fairly easy to use. Kyle do you have the image!? -D.Ulm

Newbie with lots o' questions

Hello, all! I'm trying to get our church's small (i.e. 50-200 items) library online, and I'm spending this week trying to figure out how I'm going to do it. I've pretty much decided it's either going to be: 1) Koha, or 2) some application I write myself in Perl or PHP. I have Koha 2.2.9 set up on my Gentoo Linux (2.6.20) server (w/MySQL 5), and I'm trying to figure out... well, how Koha works, really. The guides on kohadocs.org have been useful, but they're incomplete on some things I need to figure out. If anyone can answer any of these questions, I'd be very grateful! - When an item is placed on reserve, how does the librarian receive a notification of that? (i.e. what tells him/her to go get the book off the shelf and put it on the reserve shelf?) - Also, when an item is placed on reserve, it still shows up in search listings with a status of "Available". Is that normal? Is there a way to have it show up as "Reserved", so nobody gets frustrated trying to find it on the shelf? - Can Koha prompt us to remove certain items from the reserve desk? (i.e. "The following reserved items have been held for 7 days without being picked up by the patron, and can therefore be placed back into circulation...") - Finally, although I downloaded the latest version of Koha I could find (2.2.9), I hear phrases dropped like "dev_week" or "Koha 3" that make me wonder if there's a newer, better version of Koha I can get...? For instance, the Nelsonville Public Library website (http://search.athenscounty.lib.oh.us/) looks much nicer than my Koha test site, even with my using the "npl" templates. Is that sort of look/feel only available with a commercial Koha product, or can I download something that will give me a similarly pretty site? I'm sure I'll have more questions as I get deeper into Koha, but this is a start. First, verify that you get Yaz last version. If not, http://www.indexdata.dk/yaz/. Then use Fedora Package Manager (?) to install missing libraries. Search for 'xslt' not 'lsxslt' ('l' means 'link' or 'library'). -- Frédéric

No edge label - Is is realistic ?

To old hands, I am in the process of designing my bar-code label and I realize that a central element is the "call number" in most libraries, i.e. the number used to find the physical address of the book once returned to shelves. Since we have a new (and small) library with no "manual card" heritage, we have been looking at ways at using Koha to simplify operations and, essentially, to eliminate the need for a call number. In many libraries I have seen operating (Montreal municipal library is one) each book has essentially two stickers: a small one on the edge that show a call number (often on two or three small lines - no bar code) and another sticker on the third cover, with one bar-code and printed lines. The explicit purpose of the edge sticker is to permit rapid return of books to their proper shelve by a human clerk. The shelves are then organized by genre (French Novels, English Novels, Dictionaries, etc.) physically stored in shelve islands. We found that this type of organization is optimized for borrowers browsing books on the shelves. It is the normal way to operate most libraries, however, one has to accept that a lot of the space of the library is organize for people moving around and not as a simple storage area for books. Also this type of storage is wasteful of shelve space simply because there is no separation of books by format size, thus every shelve has to accommodate the largest format and shelves have to be reachable by the shorter borrowers. Our major constraint is we are very limited in space, so we are considering replacing physical browsing mostly by virtual browsing, since Koha allows this type of regrouping. Also, we want to store books on shelves barely higher than the book format they will support. There will be no other regrouping than the sorting into three sizes. The size being self evident will not need a marker and since we will use the combination First-Author-Last-Name + Main-Title to do the physical sorting, we think we can eliminate the edge sticker entirely.
