Cataloguing
by Rakesh Mistry 17 Oct '08

Hi all, I've just managed to successfully install and configure Koha on my local computer. I am now trying to add electronic books/journals as test entries, but have a few issues. I am curious to know whether the default Marc method of entry is used by the majority of people for capturing of catalogue information? In my (non-librarian) eyes it seems very picky and unintuitive. For e.g. Trying to add a Title for a Serial (440) doesn't allow me to type one in but requires a predefined list? Does every single author/journal title/etc. have to exist in the Authorities list? Am I missing something about the way the data should be captured? Any help or guidance would be really appreciated. BTW Will Koha allow me to store e-journals within the system? In other words, people browsing the catalogue will be able to download an e-journal article or e-book. Thanks Rax

Salvete! I have to second that, Brenda. It's rather commonplace for the Ethics Departments, with psychology in particular, to ensure that data is kept confidential. There are a number of good reasons for this - for example, if one were studying reactions to race, folks that _think_ their answers might be monitored might produce a different answer. (There's a lot of press about the Bradley effect in US Politics at the moment; this is a similar thing.) On one hand, it keeps a lot of very cool experiments from happening. I don't think you'd be able to repeat the Milgram experiments in quite the same way, for instance. On the other hand, it protects respondents from touchy answers and pressures they might not have faced, else. I think we both speak our minds regardless of how others might react, MJ. I respect you for that, but there are some in more delicate positions than our own. The line on what is and is not ethical ia very hazy in the US when it breaks down to LIS. ALA's kind of irresponsibly sidestepped the issue. IFLA's been a bit more forthright, fortunately. In general, there just *isn't* that much on ethics and Library science. There's enough (if you ask me) on Computer Science (ya'll are almost always ahead of us). There's some on Law Librarianship (since they're lawyers, and love rules...) The first hit on google is actually not too bad http://dlist.sir.arizona.edu/1820/ I'm kicking myself right now, since I used a book for a presentation on Ethics, and I can't remember the authors and the title save that it was published rather recently in the UK, and the whole thing was on Ethics and Information Science, and in part Library Science. It was short, too. I think it was purple. (Man I feel like a patron!) I already took Brenda's survey, and think it's fine for my response to be a public matter, but I'm not sure there's a way to flag which response is mine without messing up Brenda's work. Generally if its anonymised, then it's fair play, but it's hard to do that without reducing a lot to hard numbers. Cheers, Brooke

Satisfaction with free/open source software: survey invitation
by Brenda Chawner 17 Oct '08

I am a Ph.D. candidate in the School of Information Management at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, and my research topic is an investigation of factors that influence participant satisfaction with library or information management free/open source software projects. Some library-related examples are DSpace, EPrints, Koha, Evergreen, Greenstone, and MyLibrary. More general information management software includes web content management software such as Drupal, wiki software such as MediaWiki or PmWiki, or blogging software such as WordPress. If you use or are involved with a relevant project, I would like to invite you to complete an online survey. I am especially interested in hearing from people in a range of roles, for example user, developer, release manager, or system administrator. I am keen to have responses from people who have had either positive or negative experiences with free/open source software, to ensure that I get a perspective on factors that diminish satisfaction, as well as those that contribute toward it. The results of this project will help developers of free/open source application software projects identify opportunities to increase user satisfaction, and it will also help users identify ways in which they might contribute to projects. I expect the survey to take between 15 and 20 minutes of your time. You may receive several copies of this message, since I am sending it to a number of project and library technology email discussion lists; however, I ask that you only complete the survey once. If you have colleagues who you think would be interested in completing it, please forward this invitation to them. The survey is available at: http://surveys.sim.vuw.ac.nz/survey.aspx?surveyid=205 It will be available until Friday, 14 November, 2008. I will post a summary of the results to relevant project and library technology email discussion lists, once the thesis is finished in mid-2009. A copy of the thesis will be deposited in the Victoria University of Wellington Institutional Repository (http://researcharchive.vuw.ac.nz/) If you have any questions about this survey, please contact me at brenda.chawner(a)vuw.ac.nz or phone +64 4 463 5780. My supervisors are Professor Gary Gorman, email gary.gorman(a)vuw.ac.nz and Professor Sid Huff, email sid.huff(a)vuw.ac.nz. CGI Sessions errors?
by Rakesh Mistry 16 Oct '08

Hi I think I've managed to install Koha now (not sure if it's successfully!) I installed CGI::Session (V4.30) manually as per the advice of this page: http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=ubuntu_gutsy When I browse to the initial page http://localhost:8080 I get a "Production Mode - trapped fatal error" I also looked at this: http://www.nabble.com/Koha-3.0-beta-on-Kubuntu-gutsy---% 22production-mode---trapped-fatal-error%22-td17071451.html But not sure it was that helpful as already installed CGI::Session manually. Shelving control number
by Marcel de Rooy 16 Oct '08

16 Oct '08

Hi all, I have a question on how you deal in Koha with shelving control number (items.stack, default tag 952t). Since this field is a tinyint(1), it should be between -128 and 127. How did you resolve situations where e.g. 160 small books are on one shelf? *If* the field would not have been signed, we could at least have gone up to 255 books per shelf. Any comments are welcome! Thanks. Marcel de Rooy

Errors when installing CPAN modules on Ubuntu
by Rakesh Mistry 16 Oct '08

16 Oct '08

Hi all, I'm trying to install Koha 3.0 on an Ubuntu Gutsy computer using the instruction found at http://wiki.koha.org/doku.php?id=ubuntu_gutsy Unfortunately I'm getting some errors when installing some of the CPAN modueles (not the ZMARC one). I've attached two text files with the errors. These are the two commands I execute separately: sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Class::Factory::Util' sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Net::LDAP' Can someone please tell me what I need to do to continue? Thanks Rax
