WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT NCSI-IDRC Workshop on Library Automation Packages and Digital Library Software: July 27th to 31st and August 3rd to 7th, 2009 (http://dharmaganja.ncsi.iisc.ernet.in/workshop ) Two workshops of one week duration each on Library Automation Packages (LAP) and its integration with Digital Library Software is organised at National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore from July 27th to 31st and August 3rd to 7th. Topics covered include installation, Staff-Client and OPAC modules of a few LAP and its integration with Digital Library Software on Linux (Ubuntu) platform. The workshop is organised as part of a project on ILAP carried out at NCSI, funded by The International Development Research Centre (IDRC), a Crown Corporation and an agency of the Government of Canada. One of the objectives of the project is to test the available technological tools for the development of union catalogue and to train manpower to implement union catalogue at their respective institutions/libraries. To fulfill this objective a series of workshop is organised. First workshop was organised from 5th to 9th January, 2009 and this is second and third workshop in the series. Workshop on KOHA Library Management Software at NCRA, Pune from 13th-15th July 2009

Dear all, NCRA Pune is organising a workshop on KOHA an open source library management software from 13th July to 15th July 2009. The workshop will cover installation of KOHA on linux operating system, Introduction to Linux Operating System, customization and configuration of KOHA software, demonstration of all modules (Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Serial Control, Circulation & OPAC), Introduction to MARC 21, multilingual support in KOHA, MARC records, Import feature in KOHA etc. The registration fees for the workshop is Rs. 3000/- which includes workshop kit (software installables, installable of Operating System, Training Material), breakfast, tea and working lunch. Accomodation can be provided at NCRA guest house for the outstation candidates at an additional charges. The number of participants is expected to be 30 and the preference will be given to those candidates who have basic knowledge of handling computers. The workshop can be attended by the librarians, information specialists who are working in different types of libraries and wish to automate their library collections. Dear Justin, I recently experienced maybe a similar import scenario: in the end I failed due to some unprocessable MARC records, that passed the MARC Test (Marc Editor), but froze the koha import process mysteriously without any proper error message. They were hiding approximately 20 to 60 records upfront(!) of the last processed record and all had some special characters in the 240 field. Seeking co-sponsors for Multiple-Copy Holds Enhancement

Hello Everybody. NEKLS is pursuing a Koha enhancement that will allow staff and/or patrons to place holds on multiple copies of the same title. Our member libraries have asked for this functionality for their Book Clubs and reading groups. NEKLS is sharing the spec for this feature, prepared for us by LibLime, to see if there's interest in either tweaking the spec and/or cosponsoring the development cost. I am certain this functionality is something other libraries want, so this is a good opportunity for us to collaborate with other Koha users. NB: Even though NEKLS does not intend to allow multiple-copy holds via the OPAC, the spec includes that functionality. One of our NEKLS team proposed linking the OPAC holds permission to patron type so that only some patron types (Staff, Organization, Professional) could place multiple holds directly in the OPAC. As I said, we aren't really interested in doing this, but it may be a useful modification in some Koha implementations. NZ Koha User Group Meeting

Horowhenua Library Trust invite existing and potential Koha users and vendors to a meeting to be held on Friday the 17th July at Horowhenua District Council building, Oxford Street, Levin, from 9.30am - 4.30pm. An agenda will be finalized on the day, but come prepared to share: what version of Koha you are running, any plans to upgrade to 3.0, anything you are proud of or want to show off, any enhancement or bug fix work underway, any bug fixes or development work you'd like to see done, any problems or areas you'd like help with, future plans and ambitions, etc .. The room will have a wireless broadband conenction, projector and whiteboard. There is no charge for this meeting. Lunch can be arranged for $15 a head (anyone care to sponsor this or shall we charge per person?) Please feel to extend this invitation to anyone you think may like to attend. Inventory feature

Hello, My library is planning an inventory in about a month, and I was glad to see that Koha has an easy-to-use inventory tool. However, when I tried to generate a shelflist, the call numbers are not in order. They are ordered the way a computer would do it but not the way LC works. (i.e., The call numbers were BF1028, BF1029, BF103. The computer put them in this order by looking at the B, then the F, then the 1, etc. LC would order them BF103, BF1028, BF1029, looking at the numbers as one hundred three and one thousand twenty-eight.) Obviously, we can't use the inventory tool if the numbers are ordered this way. I was wondering if there are any plans to fix this, since it seems more like a bug-fix than an enhancement. Thanks.
