Hi! I'm Ben. Long time lurker, first time malcontent. I mean poster. ;-) We use authority records rather extensively here. The best example that I can use to explain why would be "Mark Twain." Samuel Longhorn Clemens chose the name Mark Twain as a writing pseudonym, but his pen name became so widely recognized that nearly everyone refers to him that way. Having an authority record would allow you to redirect people looking for "Samuel Longhorn Clemens" to the recognized name "Mark Twain." ...or "Sam Clemens," or "Marc Twain," or one of the other pen names that he used. It gets more useful for people like Tchaikovsky, who has multiple recognized alternate spellings of his name. We also use it to pull together iterations of musical works, which can get more byzantine. (How many "symphony no.3" titles are there?) SMTP settings for Koha box

bulkmarcimport.pl guidance

Hi, This is a follow up to the question I asked awhile back about importing records using bulkmarcimport.pl vs. the staff interface. Sounds like bulkmarcimport is the way to go. My understanding is that using bulkmarcimport is what I should use for records that have items attached. I am running Koha v. 3.0.2 on Windows. How exactly do I use bulkmarcimport.pl to import records into my database? I saw some instructions in this listserve's archive, but it was for an earlier version of Koha. I expect that my IT department will do the importing (not me) so do I need to provide them with certain information? And finally - we are NOT using zebra (only 10,000 records) but is there any kind of re-indexing job that will need to be done after the import? Thanks. Amy C. Authorities help

What are the authorities for? I cant find a explanation for them, I am trying to edit the 100 $a field, i figured out how to add authorities, do a search for that authority to stick it in the 100$a field, but whats the point? I could just turn them off, would it have a great affect on things? Thanks. For those that reply. -Scott

Mass Updating Patrons

Hi All I just had to do a mass update of all our patrons to add an extended attribute and a value for that attribute. To do this I used an export from our system that tracks our student records and used the patron import feature. It work fine except I don't think the section "Field to use for record matching" is working properly. The reason I say this is because there were about 14 new student that were part of the import file that were not currently in Koha it added there info when all I wanted to do was update what was already there. I guess it kind of makes sense but maybe we could have an option that we can select only the patrons that are currently in the database to update. Any thoughts? Thanks Ed Edward J.
