Question about GPLv3 and AGPLv3
by Bob Ewart 14 May '10

14 May '10

I have installed Koha in a local library. Our installation is only available on our local area network, not exposed to the internet. Early on we had a request to be able to print our library cards and spine labels in a format that was not possible by Koha. So I made some minor changes to the label and patron card routines to produce what we needed. I'm perfectly willing to share the code I modified, but I don't think I know how to re-package it as a source tar-ball. If we go to GPLv3 or AGPLv3, would I have to make available the whole source package? I know that a number of libraries have modified the CSS and the front page. Would they have to make the whole source available? -- Bob

Tutorial: Installing Koha 3.00.00 on Ubuntu 9.10
by Susan Mustafa 13 May '10

13 May '10

Good day everyone, I recently had to install Koha 3.00.00 on Ubuntu 9.10 and I decided to document the whole process, because I know the first time I did it, I hated my life, and also I wasn't really experienced in Ubuntu at the time. Anyways, if you have any comments or recommendations, feel free. I would assume this would work fine for Koha 3.xxx http://everydaytechy.blogspot.com/ Regards,

LibLime, a Division of PTFS Announces “Harley”, a New Stable Release of Koha Available for Immediate Download
by Sherman, Kelly 13 May '10

13 May '10

*LibLime, a Division of PTFS Announces “Harley”, a New Stable Release of Koha Available for Immediate Download* LibLime has made available a tested, stable release of Koha for immediate download at http://koha.org/download. LibLime assembled Harley to provide many of the features developed by PTFS over the last 12 months into one stable and tested release that can be used immediately by libraries world-wide. PTFS acquired LibLime in mid-March, 2010 and has been transitioning the LibLime business into its existing PTFS library systems and services organization, all of which will operate under the LibLime brand going forward. While LibLime will be focused for the foreseeable future completing transition tasks to accomplish its contractual obligations, LibLime is committed to open source software, and wanted to make a significant contribution of code made available to the general public in the earliest reasonable timeframe. Harley provides this code as a tested, stable release of Koha that is ready for installation. Harley is the first offering provided by LibLime since the acquisition, less than 60 days ago. LibLime plans to continue to make significant new Koha functionality available to libraries around the world. Enhanced software development resources and the adoption of agile software development processes will allow LibLime to develop significantly more Koha software in the coming year faster and more reliably than was previously possible. This release includes all functionality in Koha as of October 2009, plus many new features not yet available. Harley is compatible with both 3.0x and upcoming 3.2 versions. The code for the individual new features included in this version has also been made available for download from the GIT repository. The features in this release were not ready for 3.2, but, pending acceptance by the 3.4 Koha Release Manager, could be included in release 3.4. The software development effort for Harley has been sponsored by both PTFS as well as multiple library customers. *Harley provides a host of new Koha features to include: *** *Administration* New Granular Permissions *Reports* Multiple Selections in Report Wizards Back Button in Report Creation *Patron and Holds Management* Patron Batch Edit and Batch Delete Patron Improved Searching Patron Hyphenated Name Searching Lost Card Tracking Override Max Fines Track Borrower Changes Borrower History Retention Limit On-Shelf Holds Maximum Fines, Maximum Holds, and Editing of Circulation Rules Predefined Borrower Notes Expired / Cancelled Holds Report and Setting Expiration Dates Display of Hold Expiration Date Allow Multiple Holds on Items for One Title Suspend and Reactivate Holds Hold Display Rules Place Hold Option on Checkout Tab Hold Policies by Patron Category Fees for Holds Turn off Various Hold Trigger Buttons if Desired Block OPAC Renewals for Excessive Fines Copy Patron Record Display Patron Middle Initial Prompt to Save Patron Edits Lost, Claims Returned Display on Patron Record *Fines/Fees* * * Partial Fine Payment Billing Notice and Debt Collection Calculate Fines on Claims Returned Items Pre-Defined Fee Types List Fines by Type on Checkout Tab Block Payment of Outstanding Fines *General Circulation* * * Block Checkout of Items on Hold Backdate Due Dates Change Checkin Date Print Option for Hold and Overdue Notices Item Type Trigger for Hold Notices Renewal Source Fast Adds at Circulation Check In Damaged Clear Borrower Record After Checkout Turn Off Returns Column in Patron Record Display *Cataloging* Batch Item Edit Other Item Statuses Adding Additional Items Copies Item Data In Processing/Shelving Cart Save Import Profiles *OPAC* Bestseller's Club and Email Notifications OPAC Inactivity Timeout Clear Reading History OPAC "Did You Mean" Feature Turn Off My Messaging Tab in OPAC OPAC and Staff Advanced Search Changes Sorting of Item Holdings in Staff and OPAC Rename OPAC Cart Feature as Desired Set Off Shelving Location in OPAC display Turn Off Place Holds Link at Top of OPAC Results List Allow OPAC and Staff to Use Different Settings for Advanced Search Display 866 Summary Holdings Note in OPAC Main Detail Section Control Display of ISBD Tab in OPAC Search by Shelving Location * * *Web-Based Self-Check System* Automated Staff Login The LibLime – PTFS Harley release can be found at http://koha.org/download Release documentation, installation notes and a FAQ list are found at http://koha.org/documentation. *About LibLime, a division of PTFS* LibLime is the global leader in open-source solutions for libraries. Rather than sell software licenses for static, hard-to-customize software products, The PTFS LibLime Division educates libraries about the benefits of open source, enabling them to make choices about how best to provide their communities and staff with better technology services. The PTFS LibLime Division then facilitates deployment of Koha in libraries by providing outstanding consulting, development, implementation, and support/hosting for libraries of all types and sizes. PTFS is also the developer of the world’s leading content management software, ArchivalWare, and specializes in meeting library personnel staffing requirements, digitization, and metadata keying services. Re: [Koha] SIP2/OpenNCIP development (was AGPLv3 discussion)

I've pulled the repo out of it's CVS mausoleum and posted it to github: http://github.com/atz/SIPServer Updates will include 3M's checkin extensions that Koha already enjoys. This repo should serve as the de facto Koha-reconciliation codebase as well. Open to contributions, but the hard part isn't make patches: it's doing real testing with the resulting code. Long-term, I would like to see the perl stuff distributed as a proper CPAN module, but that will be a pain. Our namespace choices have been exceedingly poor, and test coverage is lacking (koha is ahead there). In particular the example ILS abstraction layer (already a poor choice for CPAN distribution) conflicts directly with Koha's self-serving reimplementation in the same namespace. I am responsible for some of that. So someday, I could imagine moving everthing under Business::SIP or OpenNCIP::ILS or similar non-root namespaces. And then, e.g: ILS::Item (example) => OpenNCIP::ILS::Item ILS::Item (Koha) => OpenNCIP::ILS::Item::Koha OpenILS::SIP::Item (EG) => OpenNCIP::ILS::Item::Evergreen Considering "SIP" is unrecognizable to most and also an acronym in VOIP circles, using it as a filename in root cpan namespace is a bad idea. And Sip.pm makes even less sense. Anyway, point being we have a venue for making changes to OpenNCIP, including license update should GPLS approve. --Joe

Re: [Koha] Authority control
by Amy Schuler 12 May '10

Hi again, Not exactly what I wanted to hear, but thanks for the response, Alejandro. In looking into this problem further, I found mention in the listserve archive of the link_bibs_to_authorities.pl utility. I tried running this and received an error "Can't locate object method "new_from_bib_field" via package "C4::Heading" (perhaps you forgot to load "C4::Heading"?) at /etc/perl/C4/Biblio.pm line 443." Does anyone know what this means? Is this link_bibs utility even a viable option? I am running Koha v. 3.0001005. Thanks as always, Amy Schuler From: tirabo(a)gmail.com [mailto:tirabo@gmail.com] On Behalf Of Alejandro Tiraboschi Sent: Tuesday, May 11, 2010 8:31 PM To: Amy Schuler Subject: Re: [Koha] Authority control Hello: 2010/5/11 Amy Schuler <schulera(a)caryinstitute.org<mailto:schulera@caryinstitute.org>> Hello, For some reason none of my biblios have authorities associated with them. The authority records exist, because I imported them and am able to find them when I search, but they have no biblios associated with them. I wonder why this is (maybe I should have imported the authorities first?) but regardless, this is how it is. Is there an easy way to establish authority control, linking the authorities with the bibs? If I reimport my bibs, will the link between the authorities and bibs be created? I think that there is no a global procedure to link the authorities with the bibs. When you reimport your bibs no links between the bibs and authorities are created. cheers, Alejandro Tiraboschi FaMAF-UNC Thanks! Amy C.
