Newbie questions

Hi gang, I have a few more questions. 1)Does anyone have a ER (relational) diagram of the database? 2)Has anyone experienced problems with double entries of items. Two or more copies of one book? How is this handled? 3)After one version of Koha has been installed, how easy or difficult is it to migrate to a newer version? (I ask this because I'm interested in the new upcoming feature dealing with LC Call Numbers). We have found a sloopy way around this problem by changing the biblioitem table=dewey to a varchar(20) and changing the cosmetics of the interfaces so as not to confuse users. Then instead of having the dewey number imported, replacing the number manually with the LC number. Seems to work so far. Thanks for any insite you can give. Barcodes

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried to use barcodes that were already on books from previous automation systems? More than half of the books in the collection I'm working with have old barcodes, it would be a time and money saver to use the ones already on the books. Thanks for your input. Libraries actually using Koha

All, I am interested in learing which libraries are currently using Koha and which ones plan to do so in the future. I maintain a resource called lib-web-cats which is a directory of libraries throught the world. One of the main features involves the ability to search by the ILS used. It would be very helpful for this directory to include those using open source systems such as Koha. MARC Import

We are trying to get the Z39.50 MARC import to work and we are getting the following message: httpd errror log:"Issuing rollback() for database handle being DESTROY'd without explicit disconnect()" Any ideas on what might be happening? Or what we are doing wrong? Nelsonville RFPs

Hello, I recently recieved a question about the RFP process and who might be responding to it/them. I'd like to make my answer a bit more public in hopes that it might stir some conversation. I hope that there will be several people, groups, and/or companies submitting responses though. Let me explain why: If there are more developers brought into the project, we will have a bigger pool of talent to work with for all of the Koha development. Additional people should also bring extra insight to development. Some organizations require multiple respondents to an RFP. Having more than one response helps show that the Koha development community is more vibrant --- and that it would survive the disappearance of a single development group (e.g., if Katipo were to suddenly disappear right now, it would be a mojor blow to Koha). It will help make releaseing RFPs and looking into Koha more attractive to other libraries if they know that there is a compete market. I'd also hope that the responses to the RFP (perhaps expunged of financial information) could be discussed in the open. I think that the value gained by working together on planning these new features will be worth the effort. This will require a major departure from the traditional RFP/response pattern, but doing RFPs for OSS projects is already pretty radical. thanks, -pate

Uploading MARC records

We're trying to use the tools for uploading MARC records into Koha in version 1.2.2, but when we select a file for uploading and click on the submit button we get an errorlog message "DBD::MySQL::st execute failed: MySQL server has gone away at /data/koha/apache-koha/cgi-bin/koha/acqui.simple/marcimport.pl line 820". Q: which installations in Germany?

Dear *, when trying to convince someone to just have a look on koha and think about switching to koha, I was asked, what installations of koha there are in Germany. I assume, there is one in Berlin, hi Dorian ;-), but are there more? I think they fear to have no community to talk to, with their existing system (Bibliotheca) they have annual user meetings and they can talk about with neighboured libraries. And BTW, I was also asked about the supported cataloguing system (I am a novice to this stuff ;-). The question was whether they would have to learn the AACR (Anglo American Cataloguing Rules) or whether they could use RAK (Regeln für die Alphabetische Katalogisierung). When googling for information about cataloguing rules I had the impression that there are many. Have cataloguing rules any impact on how to use koha? If there is an impact, then how can we cope with national cataloguing rules? Any ideas? Best wishes, Ralf
