Good day folks! We're currently evaluating KOHA as a solution for the Union Catalog project of the SciNET (Science Network) here in the Philippines. I'm interested with the database structure and the detailed features of KOHA. I tried searching koha's site but I can't find those information. I believe KOHA is an excellent system. Hello Erol, I am glad you have found Koha (the word means "gift" in Maori). It is very suitable for using in a school. It is absolutely free to download and to use, and all the software you need to run it is also free to download and use. But there is a down side. While it is very easy and intuitive to use, it is not simple for a non-technical person to set up and install. If there is a parent, or someone you know, who has a knowledge of Linux and Perl, that would be a big help. There are two things you should do right now: 1. join the koha list, (http://koha.org/mailing/) and 2. ask everyone you know if they know anything about open source software, especially Linux and Perl, and if they are willing to help you install it. I am sending a copy of my reply to the koha list. If you manage to find someone to help you install, you (or the person who is helping you) should also join the koha developers list. Sep 13, 2002 To the Koha community Welcome, Koha seems to be showing up in a lot more places these days. I've heard from people in the US, Ireland, Germany, India, and Panama about their desire to start using it. We've recently shown up on the South African Government's Open Source Software website. I've even seen a Koha installation in Japan. This is really cool! What's even better is that we're poised to do even more. If you've got a question, comment, or a success story, please feel free to drop me a line. 1.2 More work has gone into 1.2.3, and RC13 has just been released. We're seeing a lot of testing help from the community, and this will be key to making 1.2.3 work extremely well for everybody. 1.4 We're getting closer to a 1.3.0 release. Paul Poulain, the 1.4 release manager expects it in the next 2 weeks. What makes this 1.3/1.4 release so special? Well, on the surface, nothing seems to change... Koha should work exactly as in the 1.2 versions, but the underlying database API has been completely rewritten. Data is stored in the old, custom format and in MARC format too (MARC21 English by default, but other flavours of MARC will be supported as well. The 1.3.0 release has to be heavily tested to ensure that everything works as it did under 1.2.X. The next steps in the 1.3 series include MARC tools for librarians, MARC export and import, and many other nice features. REMEMBER : the 1.3.0 IS alpha-software Use it only for TESTING PURPOSES. You've been warned ! Documentation If you've converted from a proprietary ILS to Koha, please contact <nsr_koha(a)hotmail.com>. He's working on a migration guide to add to our existing manual. Translations Work is currently being done on some of our documentation translation tools. We're hoping to have tools and documentation ready for translators soon. We've also made it onto a few more radar screens, systems from Follet.com and Epixtech.com have both been spotted checking out Koha. In breaking news, Steve Tonnesen has worked a bit more Koha magic. This week he's released a demo CD for Koha. This CD will allow a user to run a sample Koha installation on any Win32 systems that will boot from a CD. What a great way to spread the word. An ISO image (suitable for burning CDs) is available at: <http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=16466>. Koha has been invited to participate in the Think-Linux show in Columbus, Ohio (in the US). We're not sure yet whether this is logisticly possible for us. While the pace of Koha acceptance and development seem to be picking up, we're still a very friendly place for newcomers. How many records?

Hi all, I'm just wondering if Koha can support fairly large databases... like, say, 1.5 million records. Actually, that's a bit of a lie. We (as the provincial library) run a union catalogue for the province - about 700,000 recs for about 1.5 million holdings througout Manitoba (and growing steadily :-) I'd like to be able to make a case for replacing our (aging, proprietary) existing system. I've taken an admittedly quick scan through the archives, to no avail. Anyone using Koha for large databases? On-line reservations

Is anyone doing work for on-line requests and email notification via OPAC? If so, then please let me know. Otherwise I'm hacking some stuff to do this that should work with current 1.2.3 RC. I am not a coder so It would be better if someone else were doing this... (I don't like wasting time on stuff that others do better)... but I think I could learn enough to create something usable that others may modify or replace later. If there are no other takers, then I will amke a start and try to keep new code separate so it can be added like a "contrib" rather than a diff. Authentication problem using 1.2.3RC11

I have just started playing around with 1.2.3RC11 I am wodering what I need to configure to avoid this message: REJECTED You do not have access to this portion of Koha ======================= What I have done: Vanilla koha install (using install.pl on linux), with all default values. I login using kohaadmin and kohapassword. Apache basic authentication is NOT configured for any koha directories. When I click on "Members" menu item it takes me to "members-home.pl" with message: "REJECTED You do not have access to this portion of Koha" Looking at cookies file, I note that my browser has set 2 cookies: 1 sessionID for each port - 8000 and 8001. In a previous message from Steve about authentication: 2. checkauth() checks for a $ENV{'REMOTE_USERNAME'} environment variable. a. If one is set, assume that basic authentication of some sort is being used b. check that this user is allowed to be running this script. If not, print a warning page and exit (possibly redirect to library home page or somesuch?). c. return a zero value and the userid logged in and the script carries on. ======================== Any ideas what I need to configure? Call for Questions

Someone had the good idea of adding a section to the Koha documentation on migration from other OPAC tools to Koha. This, naturally, requires some knowledge of what people have been using prior to Koha, and how they handled their transitions.... in other words, break out the war-stories! Please send any information on your past move to Koha, or planned move for that matter, to nsr_koha(a)hotmail.com Source code from transition tools/utilities, etc will be happily accepted, and duly credited (bonus points if you add commenting). What I'm need for your submission to be useful :) : Name of prior-to-koha catalog, who made it, what version, etc. who and how transition was managed any details on reformatting/etc scripts how data was extracted from the old catalog application how data was imported into Koha how changeover and phasing out of the old catalog happened. Overdue List?

Dear Koha Friends: We are well on our way to having Koha up and running. While I was showing the librarian the Koha program, she casually asked how to show a list of overdue books. I found that each individual user account indicates if there is an overdue book, but I couldn' t figure out how to show a complete list of all overdue books for all users. Since we will have 250 users of Koha, such a list will be important. Any clues as to how to do this? Thanks! Robert Maynord
