Sun Ultra 1 - Good or Bad?

Okay.... I have a person that is getting rid of about 30 Sun Microsystems Ultra 1 Creator 3D machines (5 years old). Anyone knowledgeable about these boxes to tell me to "grab 'em" or "run Greg, run!!!" ? Thursday, August 29, 2003 01:55 CDT As long as you're talking about staff allocation among resources, you might want to consider advocating that the 3 client libraries do cooperate. If they have mutual interlending established, they would only be serving their patrons better. And perhaps they could reduce their cataloguing costs (notice I say costs and not staff) through shared cataloguing and use of Holdings fields to identify clearly which "branch" holds what. With the cheap prices of equipment especially if you get 3 used 1.2 gig processor boxes used and 15 inch monitors we give away just to rid our selves of them.... It almost makes sense ... of course there is always the space issue! Three boxes takes up more room than three! Multiple KOHA - One Server

How difficult would it be to host multiple Koha libraries on a single server? The scenario could be: There are 3 small libraries in the same town that want to use Koha to manage their individual library collections. They combine their efforts (and money) to get a single server up and running, but still want to display the information individually (different web addresses for each library, etc). How difficult would this be to create? How many libraries could be hosted on one server? (example 2.4 Ghz P4, 512 Mb Ram, 80 Gb HD, etc). Would multiple installs of Koha be necessary, or could the config files be modified to have on install and then have the MySQL DBs be structured to handle the different libraries? My library has just entered all of our collection into the koha database and is ready to use this OPAC. Is it possible to print a shelf list from the database? Don't know if I can help with that but I can explain what the Leader is. # From MARC documentation online at Library of Congress (URL <http://lcweb.loc.gov/marc/>) the description of what the Leader is, is under the rubric of the Concise MARC 21 Bibliographic data at URL <http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/ecbdldrd.html>, to wit, LEADER A fixed field that comprises the first 24 character positions (00-23) of each record and provides information for the processing of the record. The leader is followed immediately by the Directory, which provides a computer-generated index to the location of the variable control and data fields within a record. [i.e. what we think of as the bibliographic data, what we enter] The Directory immediately follows the Leader at character position 24 and consists of a series of fixed-length (12 character positions) entries that give the tag, length, and starting character position of each variable field. In casual usage, the Directory is often thought to be part of the Leader and both are referred to together as the Leader. As for 'setting' it, you can't. That is, the computer has to be able to generate certain data elements (lengths, positionals). You may already know how to do that; I have no clue how it's done. In terms of coding the Leader, that must be done individually for each record based on the actual data of the record. The Directory, following from the definition, is directly depended on the actual data and size of the record; any changes/updates to the record automatically change the data coded into the Directory. You might be able to use a provisional, kind of rudimentary coding for the Leader, setting, by default, position 5 to n for New position 6 to a for Language Material (most common) position 7 to m for Monograph (most common) position 8 as blank position 9 as blank position 17 as 2 for less-than-full level, material not examined position 18 to a for AACR2 (or otherwise as accurate) I have no idea at all how to code the other required positions. Like most end-users, I guess just having worked with the systems we've had, the systems always did all the other bits which are equally crucial. I hope some of this helps you figure out a script. You might also want to take a look at the Understanding MARC Bibliographic, especially the end part at URL <http://www.loc.gov/marc/umb/um11to12.html> and check through the MARC Tools and Services section to see if one of the tools there that is noted as working with/for Perl scripts might help. Z3950 Server, MARC::Record, how to build a record for Koha

Hi everyone, I have been working on a Z3950 server for Koha and I am finally at the point where the server works, and I need some help refining the records that I am generating (eventually I will build in support for multiple formats; but for now I would be pretty excited if I could get it to generate "good" MARC) Basically, the Z3950 server uses SimpleServer, which has a fetch handler subroutine to fetch one record(the present handler will call fetch_handler as often as necessary for the client's request). So...here is a snipit of code from my script where I attempt to generate a MARC record. When I run the resulting string from this code through Paul's dumpmarc.pl it complains about the leader. MARC::Record experts: any ideas, suggestions as to how to set the leader? Any other suggestions?
