Since we're bandying about our desires for new Koha features, this seems like a good time and place to ask for ideas of what you would like to see added to (or changed in) Koha in the future. Ideally, I'd like to see ideas submitted one per email, with a brief explanation. We, as well as others that exist in the academic, scientific and technical community use the library of congress numbers rather than Dewey to catalog our books in. Let us digress back into history further ... this was a feature that had been requested ages ago, most probably before you came on board and had slipped though the cracks. Both the LC and Dewey information is present in the MARC record, and at the expense of sounding harsh, if you do not know what a library of congress cataloging number is, and you are doing programming work on this project, perhaps you should study up on it a bit. You mentioned.... "links to other projects" I believe what you are referring to was he DYNIX Link... If you are not familiar with DYNIX you need to be. It is a very expensive product with many interesting features. If you carefully read the message that included the DYNIX link it was to offer a look at the other part of the world you are personally attempting to involve yourself in. Only by examining all of the product offerings that are out there will you understand what the state of the art is. This state of the art is what others that are looking at library automation systems look at also. As I had previously stated.... it is always a goal to meet or exceed what exists already... and HEY!( yep this one was a shout) if you don;t study it you will continue along in a direction that you think is reality but the rest of the world is examining he entire picture, not just what you are working on... We all know that programmers need money to live, just like librarians, so why be so hostile to the idea? Library free software interests me. There are some libraries which are real assets to their communities and could benefit from it, but I have no grant funding any more. I have to make money to live and koha-based projects are part of that. There is a lot of koha work that I do for free, including things that "need to get done" but no-one will pay for. I cannot afford to help everyone for free, so I pick a few things at a time which look like fun, good ideas and worthwhile. I hope that someone appreciates it, even if you don't. The paid work is on top of that, extra to the time that I would spend on koha anyway. If we've no paid work on koha, that time gets filled with other paid work because it has to be. Payment brings extra programmer time to koha. (Don't worry about my email writing: I type very quickly.) Those priorities are determined by what the payer wants, so if your idea doesn't get worked on for free and it's important to you, consider trying it commercially. Maybe smecc can't afford to do that. I can't find details about staff or funding on its web site. Off the top of my head, I can't recall what they contributed or offered to koha. A quick search for smecc on the lists gives the LoC request many times, including some BLOCK CAPS SHOUTING, links to other projects, and an unhelpful "we're not using koha" reply to a survey, cc'd to the developers (to annoy them?). I think people wanting free help need to be more open about their institution and reasons, and nicer to potential helpers. I suspect it will be the same with any of Pat's suggested groups. I may as well write that "we could also hope that there are some librarians who work for purely altruistic reasons" There are many of us that do perform in this mode! Also.... any interpretation of large cap letters as shouting is your perception. If I hit he caps lock accidentally and type a bunch of stuff chances are I am not going to retype it all.. There are those that work on Koha because they enjoy it, and think it's a worthwhile project, and there are those who work on it because it earns them money, and there are those who do both (I think most fall into the third category). I think it's fair to say that no one should be *pressured* to work for free. Let's face it: it's frustrating for developers to not get recognition for the hard work that they do, and it's frustrating for users to not get the bug fixed that's causing their particular installation problems. I think users and developers should have an agreement: Developers will work on what they can when they're able, taking into account the expressed needs and desires of the users. And the users will express their needs and desires (and even complaints), with the knowledge that their problem may not go on top of the pile (and with the knowledge that the only way to move an item to the top of the pile may be with a little $$$) If sides can be aware that the other is working within the framework of their needs, I think we can avoid any personal attacks in the future. Just from what other library folk have experienced in the past, it may be wise to keep at least one set of your card catalogue (I assumed that was what you meant by "on-paper", although if it is a book catalogue, that is even easier) for the first year or so as staff transition to relying on the Koha ILS. Don't know about generating new acq reports, but as for your other question >[...]is there a way to add jacket cover photos or Web-based links >relevant to a book or its author? I had asked this question earlier this year. The answer at the time was "no, not yet" In responding, Paul indicated what would be needed to be added to do it, which was well beyond me. I can dig his answer up if you want. Otherwise, as Paul stated at the time, it was *not* a high priority for the developers, although I still think it would be a great little bell & whistle for Koha to consider adding soon. That wasn't quite it After setting the PERL5LIB and KOHA_CONF env variables I got the following error: could not find : /usr/local/koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/intranet-tmpl/default/en/inclu des//cat-top.inc at /usr/local/koha/intranet/modules/C4/Output.pm line 369. There's an extra intranet-tmpl in the include path. I just put a symbolic link to /usr/local/koha/intranet/htdocs/intranet-tmpl/ inside itself. It looks like this script is working now. Thanks for the tips. __Sam p.s. Where can I fine a good/comprehensive user manual for Koha users? Koha admin over web?

Hello. I'm actually Tatiana's husband James, an open source guy who's sort of gently pushing her towards Koha (yes, she's a librarian) :) . Part of my gentle nudging may end up involving setting up an old machine we have with Koha - perhaps on a day when I just happened to have brought her some flowers or a bottle of champagne. I, too, am a Debian fan, btw. Ideally, I'd like this machine to be located remotely, but be connected to the web (using a dyndns address - pseudo-static, for those of you who might not know much about dyndns). But part of that hopeful plan banks on the assumption that Koha can be adminstered via the web (as opposed to from a local network). Is this assumption about Koha correct? I.e., could we - and other interested parties - log into Koha for remote system admin and modification (e.g., adding records, patrons, fiddling with financial records)? Essentially what I'd like is a machine set up for a testbed, with testing being done via the web. Seems to me like Koha is already set up to do this on an intranet, but what about via the internet? Apache 2 Not Found

Friends, I took the plunge and downloaded Koha, Apache Server, MySQL, and Perl to see if this configuration would work to handle the 30+ libraries I will be setting up this year at extension centers for our college. I put all of this on our NT 4 server here at the main library. Everything seemed to go fine except I got the same error message when I tried to install Koha--Apache 2 could not be located as a service. I got the same error message when I went to the Start Menu and tried to start Apache Server. Any suggestions?
