Hello, Recentlly, we have bought LC MARC 21 records (back issue) from the The Library Corporation in CD-ROMs database (These CD-ROMs DB has its own cataloging software called ITS for Win). We want to use the CD-ROMs with Koha (ver 2.0.1) or import MARC 21 records into the koha's breeding farm DB. We have tried and did not succeed. I'm afraid that *why* we don't do that sort of thing has not been clarified to the extent that we ought to. You really, really should go record by record through your collection and actually evaluate each MARC record. MARC records can be extremely detailed - and in most cases should be extremely detailed. First, there ought to be notes with a good record. CDs come to mind. A bad CD record will not have a note referring to the tracks on a given musical CD. A good record will have each track title. This is useful for patrons - highly so. Suppose I am looking for the song Magic Stick by the rapper 50 cent. If I typed in Magic Stick to my catalogue, and the MARC record I had for 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' had the notes, that record would appear in the search listings. Further, a good MARC record for that would have an alternate author or performer listing for Fifty Cent and perhaps even Fifty Cents for patrons who try different spellings of the artist's name. It might even carry Snoop Dog and L'il Kim. Numerical differences happen quite often in cataloguing. Janet Evanovich's series come to mind. If a patron types in "10 Big Ones", you want that entry in the alternate title field so that they pull it up. All of these points fall under the law "Save the time of the reader." Sometimes that means taking more time on our end. I have seen some terrible records in my short tenure - those that are missing a Title or Author field where there ought to be. Were you to simply retrieve those records automatically, you'd be stuck with those in your catalogue, and have no means of knowing that they are there. So, I individually cull Fiction and Non Fiction adult records from the Library of Congress (which is free) because those records tend to be good. I individually cull Children's records from Access Pennsylvania or perhaps Maine InfoNet. I individually cull CDs and DVDs from Access Pennsylvania and Maine InfoNet. I used to use Kansas City's catalogue, but alas, they no longer allow MARC downloads for records. Which brings me to this point - I would love for Koha to have an obvious means of download of MARC records. Perhaps I like one of Stephen's records. It would be great to be able to download that, like I can with Library of Congress. If it does, I've obviously missed something, and I apologise. To sum up again, Z39.50 is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Brooke @ Hinsdale

Obtaining MARC21 records

I have been playing with Koha some, trying to work out how it works so we can start using it at my school. My question is about sources for bibliographic records. What is the best (free) way to get a set of biblios to populate the catalog, so that we don't have to look up every item individually, either manually entering data or searching for items through the z3950 search? I see that subscriptions and ftp downloads are available from the LC, but the prices here are prohibitive. Is there anyhwere to download large numbers of records in large files to be imported into Koha?

Christopher, Building a catalog of your collection does require every record to be evaluated. It is very labor intensive. There are some commercial services that will take a list of ISBNs, LCCNs or titles and authors and match on those access points. Marcive has a good reputation. Not free. Is there a consortium of libraries you could join? You might be able to get access to resources at a discount. Check with your state library and state education agency. I have made our catalog available for download, lpi.mrc. It might not match your collection but it may be useful in testing. yaz 2.0.28: there´s no yaz-config

Hello Koha, trying install Net:Z3950 I got the known message: "ERROR: Unable to call script 'yaz-config': is YAZ installed? at Makefile.PL line 12." OK, I get it from the yaz-webside http://www.indexdata.dk/. There are really many : 3 critical bugs, 17 minor bugs fixed and 4 major and 13 minor improvements RELEASE NOTES ============= Koha is the 1st Open-Source Integrated Library System. Released at first in New zealand, in 2000 januaray, it is maintained by a team of volunteers from around the globe, the Koha system is a full catalogue, opac, circulation and acquisitions system. Koha 2.2 is more than 247 000 lines of code, developped by more than 30 differents developpers (excluding translators). With the 2.2 version, Koha is now a mature product, with a lot of nice features. It's used in more than 50 libraries, from all kinds (public, schools, search, religious...), of all size (from 1 to 8 branches, from 1000 to 300 000 items). ======== WARNING ======== * This version is in the stable tree of Koha, but still evaluated as "Release Candidate". A few bugs are still known or have to be found, maybe by you. But it's stable enough to be used in production. * This version is only available in ENGLISH and FRENCH. Many languages to come. Spanish (Argentina) is also available. May be a little buggy anyway. * Biblio frameworks : - In UNIMARC - french. Frameworks are defined and can be set up during installation for : old documents, cartographies, electronic documents, microfilms, monographies, serials, films and images, "tire à part" - In English, only a default framework is provided. To solve the problem, the biblio can no more be modified after the order has been placed. Less feature, but more reliable ! (not simple solution to solve this problem. Would imply to rewrite the MARC biblio from the non marc datas, and no API is provided for this yet) 2 CRITICAL bugfix in Biblio.pm, removing &branches declaration (was due to an untested cvs rollback, opac-search.pl was crashing) 3 CRITICAL bugfix in Biblio.pm when MARC=OFF. subjects were stored and immediatly deleted. And not stored correctly in MARC part of the biblio. (thanks to Waylon Robertson) ***** Minor 1 bugfix in updatedatabase (auth_header creation table). Don't affect previous install of 2.2, only upgrades 2.0 => 2.2 2 reading rec : Fixing link to toggle between full and limited display 3 bugfix for moremember.pl that no longer outputed item type for issues 4 defaulting actual cost to estimated cost (was 0 by default) 5 bugfix : in biblio search, - and other signs where not properly managed. Hi Boss, There are full instructions on installing Koha 2.0.0 on Win32 at http://www.saas.nsw.edu.au/koha_wiki/index.php?page=KohaOnWindows. Follow them carefully and you should be able to install successfully. I have successfully installed Koha on Win XP Pro and have been running a small seminary library for about 3 months now. I have wanted to upgrade the install to Koha 2.2.0 RC3 (for testing) but to this point have been unsuccessful because the upgrade/install script is not Windows friendly, but that's about what you can expect from Open Source software which is really geared to Linux/Unix. But, not to worry, when the 2.2.0 release is stable and ready for production they will make an MSI installer available. If you have any problems, I might be able to help. Regards, Dana Huff

Using lccn in koha 2.2.0 rc2

Hello all, thanks to everyone who has worked to make koha available. 1. one of the features i have been waiting for is to use lccn in koha rather than dewey. however i have set up 2.2.0 rc2 but i do not know any setting to be made to use lccn or any other type of call number. could any on explain how or give me pointers? 2. also the library i am installing for (Hezekiah Oluwasanmi Library, Ile-Ife Nigeria - over 400,000 biblios) has lccn in 050 (the original loc call number) and their own variation in 090. sometimes it matches for each record and sometimes not. but i notice 090 is being used by koha internally. can i change this to something else without breaking koha? the library will want 090 displayed in opac seach as call number but still retain 050 3. where is the place to specify the physical location of items. thanks ===== Olugbenga Adara MCP Consultant, 3om Services, 75, Lebanon Street, Dugbe, Ibadan, Nigeria. DearKoha Developers, My name is Yohannes Mulugeta. I am working as a librarian (Business Analyst in the Koha Customization team) in Addis Ababa University Libraries, Ethiopia. Recently, we have started to customize Koha 2.0.1 for our academic libraries. We start from the Acquisition, cataloging, circulation, and OPAC modules of Koha. I am just looking at the source code of the Koha database (which is written in perl script) and trying to develop how it looks like for different levels of people involved in system development: from users view, developers view, and programs side.
