Debugging Koha

Hi: I'm using Koha 2.2.3 and I've imported using bulkmarckimport many biblioitems to Koha. Now when searching something through the OPAC I get "Internal Server Error"s from Apache, and error.log doesn't tell me anythin usefull. I've changed the first line of opac-search.pl from #!/usr/bin/perl to #!/usr/bin/perl -w to try getting more info in the apache log, but I can guess what's going on. I believe you need to manually install the MARC frameworks on Windows. See if you can find the batch file of MySQL commands for doing this. It should be called structure_def.sql (Maybe in C:/usr/local/koha/intranet/scripts/misc/marc_datas/marc21_en -- I'm not familiar with Windows installations of Koha.) Thank you for replying. That was the problem. When KOHA set itself up it used the server name instead of the ip address for the Virtual host name. I had to add in two NameVirtual Host Lines NameVirtualHost=ipaddress:80 NameVirtualHost=ipaddress:8080 and change the <VirtualHost name:port> to <VirtualHost ipaddress:port> After that worked I made the koha.http.conf a bit more generic by using wildcards instead of ip addresses. I thought you may find it interesting. It allows you to set up your virtual host files independent of ip address so it is possible to use a dhcp assigned address or in my case have the server on a test network and then move it to a production network. I included my koha.http.conf which is made part of my apache2.conf with an include. As for learning about cataloguing, one thing I would suggest is to follow the advice of my cataloguing instructor: if you cannot afford the MARC coding volumes directly from LC's CDS, you can make yourself a "MARC workbook" for the Bibliographic Format by printing out and binding together the online materials that are available for free at URL <http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/ecbdhome.html> It is a little easier to have it as a reference book on your desk when you are studying examples instead of scanning online (also more convenient for lunch/break studying outdoors! ;-D). > My concern is, how to catalog Arabic Materials. [snip] Yes, you can catalogue in your own language, or for that matter, any language. I don't know if there are special rules put forth by Malaysia's National Library or other authoritative bodies for Arabic language cataloguing, but you should make some effort to see if there are standards to which your library might be expected to comply. Beyond that advice/caveat, you could apply the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules to Arabic. In terms of MARC coding, you would be indicating the language of the material in the normal place (positions 35-37) in the 008 tag. For clarity sake, you might want to code 040 tags (if not present in the records you find) where the $b subfield is clearly coded for Arabic. As for how to code, the examples given in the exchanges between Joshua and Carol apply again. If you want your patrons to be able to search with Arabic words in subject headings as well, you may have to find an Arabic-language thesaurus. I think Dewey (19? 20?) has been translated into Arabic but I am not sure about LCSH. Otherwise, there might be a Malaysian national standard to use. BTW: in case you do need/want to do any transliteration as well, you may want to familiarise yourself with the ALA-LC Romanization Tables, available in print or online at URL <http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html> Hope that this helps a bit. While you might be a little daunted by it at first, I believe that its flexibility would reward your efforts in the long run. Use an old fashioned Ranganathan version, instead of the newest issue. If I had guts and an army of assistants, that's what I'd use. Dewey, in my not so humble opinion, would be an awful choice for an Arabic library due to it's Western slant. I was helping my clerk classify language tapes that we got in yesterday, and she was justifiably confused. While French, Italian, German and Spanish all played nicely, Japanese, Chinese and Arabic were funky by comparison. Hi everybody, I have a little background in cataloging. I am an ex-librarian (in charge in Library Automation). Thus, my concern on ability of the system esp. Koha. For almost a year I have been following Koha, do a part time testing, finding the best way of implementing Koha in different environment. (Maybe if libraries in Malaysia want an Open Source Solution, I can recommend Koha). I am following current discussions on cataloging materials in different character set (e.g: Chinese pinyin). It's come to my attention that tags 880 have something todo with this (by the way, I am still learning cataloging). My concern is, how to catalog Arabic Materials. My question as follows (Assume these questions from beginner level cataloger): 1. What should I add in my MARC structure, Links to other fields and etc? 2. Must I modify Koha scripts in order to enable presentation different character set? ( I have tried copying arabic word, put on tag 245 and I have problems of displaying these character. Character not show up properly, even though I set my browser Encoding to Arabic character set). 3. Can I directly catalog in native language (eg: Arabic) in tags other than tag 880-Not using transliteration. Example tag 245. If can, how? -Maybe related to question no.2 (In this case patrons have to search using arabic words). Thanks in advance for your kind response. The neat thing about the harrowing setup of the parameters is that you may select which tag shows where. When I set up my tags, I put the absolutely crucial stuff on the first tab.
