Announcing Koha Project Day

Hi all, The management team here at LibLime is happy to announce a new initiative to foster community development and growth of the Koha project. As of this week, _every_ Sunday is Koha Project Day here at LibLime (for our NZ staff, this translates into Monday). Of course, throughout the week, we LibLimers spend the majority of our time working for our customers: writing specifications, doing development work, implementation, and support. Koha Project Day gives us a chance to give back to you -- the community that makes all of this possible! Barring any urgent support requests, or last-minute proposals due, we're planning to focus our energy entirely on the Koha Project itself during Koha Project Day -- every week. We'd like to extend the invitation to you, dear community. Join us any time on any Sunday and pitch in. Or, alternatively, pick a regular day/time that you find convenient and announce it to the rest of the community. It's strictly voluntary of course (for our staff too), so if you're unable to participate, we won't hold a grudge :-). But if you're able, join us and help out, there's plenty to do. Speaking of which, what is there to do? Glad you asked. Here's just a partial list: * organize and write documentation * write specifications for new proposed features * write technical documentation for existing Koha features * respond to questions/comments on the Koha lists * test features and report bugs * fix bugs :-) * read through the code and make comments * translate Koha into your native language * write that new feature you thought of * talk to the developers and tell them how to improve Koha Where is all of this happening? Hi frindz I am unisng koha window version 2.2.4, other server information as follows: OS version Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] Perl version5.008007 MySQL versionmysql Ver 12.22 Distrib 4.0.26, for Win32 (ia32) Apache version. I want to export all the entries in MS-Access for some personal use in the office. Ports for Koha

Hi, previous problems solved. (Well, almost, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it...) Since I am installing Koha on a university machine, the firewall is very restrictive, and I need to request any additional ports to be opened. Port 80 is already used for webserving via apache, and so I was going to use ports 8000 and 8080, as suggested by the installer. I have emailed the people responsible for changing the firewall, and they have sent me a form to fill in (http://hustu.nottingham.ac.uk/bar/Firewall-change-request.doc) - the only parts I am having trouble filling in is the "Direction of Traffic Initiation" (I am assuming this should be "In") and "Protocol" (I am assuming this should be "HTTP"). The rest, I think, is fairly self-explanatory. Thank you in advance - I very much appreciate your help! Naming Conventions

Hi all, A while back, I posed a question to these lists asking what the naming conventions were in your library for referring to patrons/ borrowers/users/etc. Thank you all for responding! The overwhelming majority of you said that you use the term 'patrons' most frequently. As a result, I suggest we change the naming convention within Koha's default templates to represent that majority. Some of you had feedback on other naming conventions as well. For instance, several said that 'check-out' and 'check-in' were preferred terms over 'issue' and 'return'. I've gotten the same feedback from quite a few libraries in my demos around North America. So, I'd also like to propose we adjust the default templates to reflect that majority. Of course, with our flexible translation framework, it's a fairly trivial procedure to change the wording in your local installation, if you prefer the current conventions. Any objections? installing koha on centos 4.4

List of books catalogued

She is able to view the number of books catalogued so far (I don't know how: I haven't managed to do it till now, but she spends more time on Koha), but not the list of catalogued books. yaz failed dependencies on CentOS 5

hi, I'm the sysadmin from a University in Mexico and I've been trying to install Koha for our library. When I used fedora 5 some years ago it installed fine but now we are using Centos 5 and I cant install ZOOM nor yaz properly. I've tried to rebuild the src rpms for yaz and then compiling ZOOM perl bindings from source and it seems ok but then the Koha perl installer keeps saying that zoom is not installed. -- Dr. Mat. It contains information about the content and structure of the record and ends with a bit called the registry that allows computers to take the alphanumeric string that is the record and fill out a table (matrix). There are elements (positions) that you must enter in the leader -- 5, 6, 7, 17 and 18 are required -- and others that the computer seems to complete on its own. As a cataloguing technician, I have never really understood how the computer 'knows' (sorry, MJR, but to the non-programmers among us, this is all 'automagical' stuff!) which are which. I have no idea if Koha fills these in automatically or not. I tend to do my cataloguing outside of Koha and import ready-made records. > 003 - Control number identifier Backtracking one second: although some Integrated Library Systems (ILS) do generate a number for the 001 field automatically, I don't think Koha does yet. You could probably customise it to do that easily enough. I enter those numbers manually when cataloguing. Think of the 003 as the source for that serial number. The 003 is where you should be putting your library code or symbol. E.g. in Canada, library symbols tend to look something like this: CaMWUW which would be read as Canada-Manitoba-Winnipeg-University of Winnipeg. In the U.S, LC assigns codes; in Canada, the National Collections (formerly NLC). Other countries have similar authorities. If the Solomon Islands has a code for your library, that's what you would enter in the 003. Otherwise, just make something up that you like or leave it out. It won't affect the quality of records: it is really something that cataloguers look at when assessing whether to accept records for import into their catalogues (certain libraries having better reputations for quality cataloguing than others). If you adjust a record to make it your library's own, it is legitimate to put your symbol/code in the 003. You can adjust the 040 to track the history of the record if you want (multiple $d's with the respective libraries' codes as necessary). > 005 - Date and time of latest transaction Again, once you create the 005 initially, some ILS automatically update it. I don't think that Koha does. It isn't terribly important. > 008 - Fixed length date elements - General information Now, a field that is terribly important. There are certain key positions that must be coded to make minimum record requirements (basically, to create something that is worthy of being called a MARC record); for book materials these are: 0-5 (date entered), 6 (type of date), 7-10 (date 1), 11-14 (date 2, if applicable), 15-17 (country of publication), and 35-37 (language). The Library of Congress maintains the MARC21 coding standards, explaining each field and giving coding examples.
