Re: [Koha] Group multiple items in a "box" for easy circulation
by Jason O'Neil 14 Mar '11

Thanks for the reply. > Are there items in the box that are also included in other, different boxes? No, we don't need this functionality. Items only need to belong to one box at a time. > If you're just using Koha to check it in and out as a single resource, > then IMO you can just create a new item type and you're good to go. The boxes are made up of different items that are already in the catalogue, and may one day return to being stand-alone items. So they do have to have the ability to be treated as separate items - so creating a new item type alone isn't sufficient. > If you want Koha to handle the inventory check on the individually > barcoded items within the box, then it's likely a workaround could be > found that wouldn't require customizations. It's similar to someone > checking out all the issues of a serial isn't it? Or perhaps carts? > Leverage lists or tags? Out of these lists look the most promising, is there any easy way to circulate an entire list to a patron at one time? I can see the option to place all items on hold, but not to check in or check out. If there's a way to do that it might be ideal. If not, I might code it myself :) Thanks, Jason On Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 5:46 AM, <hansbkk(a)gmail.com> wrote: > If you're just using Koha to check it in and out as a single resource, > then IMO you can just create a new item type and you're good to go. > > If you want Koha to handle the inventory check on the individually > barcoded items within the box, then it's likely a workaround could be > found that wouldn't require customizations. Split call numbers on labels?
by Marty 13 Mar '11

13 Mar '11

I was wondering what the criteria are for koha to split call numbers on labels. I have various long Dewey numbers, but none seem to get split as I understand it. My label layout has barcode and itemcallnumber (for a spine label) Say I have an itemcallnumber 808.066028, it does not matter how it appears, either as 880.06'602'8 or 880.06/602/8, for example (many similar versions are to be found at the LoC), the number never gets split. I understand being split as in the case of 880.06'602'8 that I have 880.06 on the first line, 602 on the second or maybe 6028, because spines are a limited width and the number would be too long to fit. Making the font size smaller is NOT an acceptable solution... So, am I missing something or do I have to go back to my old trusty kbarcode? Thanks, Marty

Koha wiki upgraded
by Galen Charlton 13 Mar '11

13 Mar '11

Hi, I've upgraded the version of Mediawiki used by http://wiki.koha-community.org/ to 1.16.2. One particularly visible change is that the OpenID login page now lists a plethora of options for using your account on other web services such as Google, Flickr, and so forth to identify yourself to the Koha wiki. If you find anything amiss after the upgrade, please let me know. Any > thoughts? > > Cheers Jo. > Hi Jo, Its difficult to estimate so early. As I see it, the purpose of Kohacon is twofold. Its for the community to meet, get to know each other, decide on future direction of the project etc. At the same time it is also to promote Koha in the region where its held. Apart from the usual Koha papers about features, development, perl, etc, one thing we can plan for is a stream for library science students. VPM, Thane runs BLIB and MLIB courses under the aegis of University of Mumbai, as do several colleges in the region. This is a fairly large number of students. Another stream I am quite keen on is for librarians new to Koha. This stream could be sub divided into "Installation, Set-up, Running Koha" & a second sub-stream addressing queries / difficulties faced by librarians using Koha may be through interactive sessions. Through its Granthalaya.org project VPM, Thane has enabled many Public Libraries to computerize their catalouges and operations using Koha. We will keep doing this for more and more libraries. The Public Libraries in India face unique challenges and have unique requirements in some ares such as accounting, reporting etc. I would love to see a interactive session between experienced librarians running Koha for many years and this set of librarians from Indian public libraries ( with some experience developers also sitting in the discussion panel to understand how Koha could be further develpoed to address the unique needs of these Indian public libraries ) One more idea I have in mind, is for a development stream for aspiring Koha developers from around the world. Or perhaps this could be addressed as a separate stream of the Hackfest as suggested by Paul. These are just some Ideas. Its for the community to decide. If we could reach an agreement on the kind of streams like the above suggested and some people volunteering to conduct these streams, contribute papers, sit in on discussion panels etc, we could promote the streams to the interest groups mentioned above. It will also help us in ground organization like additional halls / rooms etc. PS : posting this to koha-devel so see if we can spark some interest in my ramblings above ;) Regards, Koustubha Kale Anant Corporation Contact Details : Address : 103, Armaan Residency, R. Question on Patron Search
by Cynthia Ng 13 Mar '11

13 Mar '11

Hi All, I am a student at UBC in the LIS program and I'm doing an assignment related to Koha. I hope someone wouldn't mind answering my question as I searched through the documentation and mailing list archive but didn't find an answer to my question. I'm using the ByWater Solutions' Koha v3.03 test instance and was playing around with the Patron Search interface. I noticed in the documentation that the patron search is supposed to cover any part of a name and barcode number (ref: http://koha-community.org/documentation/3-2-manual/?ch=x7264 using 3.2 since the 3.0 documentation didn't cover this topic), but I found that using e-mail worked too. So, I was wondering if there is a more complete list of which fields are searchable or if it's something that can be customized in the administrative panel that I missed. Any further information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! Sincerely, Cynthia Ng MLIS Candidate, UBC School of Library, Archival, and Information Studies (SLAIS)

Getting 100, 300, 500 or 1000 attendees participants will impact on the speakers programme. For instance with 200 participants we could opt for 1 or 2 streams of papers, but 500 or 1000 attendees could open up the possiblilty of 4 - 5 streams. This could also mean different approaches. For instance some quite specific or focussed papers could be delivered as well as some high level. One stream could be high level, general, overview for newcomers and decision makers/influencers, another stream could be focussed towards librarians using it day in and day out, another at system administrators (just for example). I ask this because it affects what kind of abstract to put together. Any thoughts?
