Greetings and a couple of newbie questions
by King, Fred 07 May '13

07 May '13

Hello everybody, ...and greetings from the US. I'm Fred King, medical librarian and general computer geek at MedStar Washington Hospital, in Washington, DC. Last Friday, I finally got the go-ahead to install Koha in my library. We're a teaching hospital, and the library serves mostly medical residents, staff doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff. Our collection has maybe 5000 bibs and 25,000 items, soon to become much, much smaller when we move down the hall to space about half of what we have now. We circulate maybe 100 items per month; most of the information our users need is in journals. I looked into Koha at great length a few years ago, but we stuck with our old system until now. We're cancelling our contract with the old system (and saving $10,000 US per year by doing it), and we hope to have Koha up and running by mid-June. Yes, five weeks from now. In order to show my director what could be done, I installed a working version of Koha 3.10 on a spare computer, using Vimal Kumar's Koha Live DVD, which I think is running Xubuntu 12.04. That's probably the way I'll install Koha on our production server, too. I configured the system, uploaded our bibs, item, and patron data, and everything's running beautifully. Well, almost beautifully. I'm still stuck on two problems. First, when I search on a keyword in the OPAC, the list of items comes up with each item showing "Availability: No copies available. Checked out (1)." In the Global System Preferences | OPAC page I have the OPACXSLTDetailsDisplay and OPACXSLTResultsDisplay stylesheets set at Default. I looked through the list archive and it looks like I need to run fix_onloan.pl. However, when I tried to run it, I got an error message "Couldn't find C4/filename.pm in @INC. I moved that file into a directory in @INC, but got another "couldn't find" message. I could keep moving files, but there must be an easier way. Can anyone tell me how? Or if that's not the problem, could anyone tell me how to fix the availability problem? Second, when I display a single item in the OPAC, the item type displays correctly (with icon, even) in the item description, but under Holdings, where Koha displays Item Type, Location, Call Number, Status, Due Date, and Barcode, there's a blank spot under Holdings. I've looked through the manual and tried different item mappings, but nothing I've tried works. Where is that field getting its information? I should add that I'm pretty much self-taught with computers, and although I can build a PC from parts, design a web page, and slowly find my way around a Linux system, there are some odd gaps in my knowledge. So if I ask something that everybody knows, it's probably because I haven't run across it yet. Since I don't have control of our domain name and I'm not able to make our OPAC opac.domainname.com, how do i make my koha opac available in http://domainname.com/opac. http://domainname.com will be our library portal and http://domainname.com/opac will be our OPAC. thanks and have a nice day! -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/koha-in-http-domainname-com-opac-tp575374… Sent from the Koha-general mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

I am running Koha 3.10.5 on Debian Squeeze on a Windows 7 virtual machine. A unimarc flavored instance was created and two records were loaded on the fresh system from a Z39 server. Retrieval of the records seemed to work correctly but a reindexing was required after some editing of the two records. The reindexing seems to have worked but produced a voluminous amount of warming messages. Does anyone know what these messages mean? Here are the messages: Records exported: 2 ==================== REINDEXING zebra ==================== 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Music-number' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Music-number' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'UPC' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'UPC' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'tpubdate' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Modified-code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'char-encoding' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'char-encoding' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'char-encoding' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'script-Title' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Country-heading' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Illustration-code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Content-type' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Content-type' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Content-type' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Content-type' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Conference-code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Festschrift-indicator' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Index-indicator' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Literature-Code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Biography-Code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Type-Of-Serial' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Frequency-code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Regularity-code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Content-type' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Content-type' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Conference-publication-Code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Title-Page-availability-Code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Index-availability-Code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Cumulative-Index-availability-Code' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Video-mt' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Graphics-type' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Graphics-support' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Graphics-support' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Serials' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Serials' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Printed-music' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Printed-music' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Electronic-ressource' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Title-host' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'title-host' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'Title-host' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'title-host' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'lcn' not found in attset(s) 16:11:27-03/05 zebraidx(3490) [warn] Index 'lcn' not found in attset(s) ==================== CLEANING ====================

Some questions - and a suggestion - on treatment of ISBN in koha
by Manos PETRIDIS 06 May '13

06 May '13

Please consider the following scenario: I have a book in my hands that bears ISBN-13 9780553507065, and wish to make a biblio entry in koha. I go to Home > Cataloging and perform a "Cataloging search" i.e. "Search the catalog and the reservoir" with the ISBN on the book. Failing to find it, I then perform a Z39.50 search, select a fitting entry and try to import it in my koha, only to find that the book already exists there. Odd... Correct me if I'm wrong, but koha staff client cataloging search at /cgi-bin/koha/cataloguing/addbooks.pl seems to look for specific strings of characters. Therefore, when one enters an ISBN number of 9780006483113 as a search string for example, koha fails to find entries bearing ISBN numbers of 978-0-553-50706-5 0-553-50706-0 0553507060 i.e. the alternate forms of the same ISMB number. I also remember reading here in the list, that when performing Z39.50 searches koha first "translates" the ISBN-13 user input to ISBN-10 before querying Z39.50 targets. Thus, should one select a Z39.50 result with ISBN-10 and fail to "correct" it before saving the new entry, is prone to the problem described above. Furthermore, should that be the case, if one chooses to use the ISBN-13 form only when editing his own entries, they would fail to appear on other people's searches on his own koha installation, if their own system was koha too (or preformed along similar lines). Questions: If one wishes to enter all four alternate forms of the same ISBN, is it better to use multiple 020a entries (in USMARC) or to use multiple occurrences within the same 020a entry? Do other libraries/systems use the notion "A | B | C | D" I see in their Z39.50 results, or is it simply a convention used to display in one line values kept as discrete entries in the originating system? Suggestion: I guess there is some valid reasoning behind the behaviour described above, resolved when these koha modules were created, I wonder however if it would be useful that koha would automatically populate the bibliographical entries with the missing alternate 020a entries (in USMARC), either at the time of user input, or by some batch procedure, that would also take care of existing entries. This could well be controlled by two new options/preferences, one that would enable such behaviour and one that would instruct koha to use one 020a entry to keep all four forms, or four discrete entries. kind regards, Manos PETRIDIS Athens, Greece

by rfblanchard 06 May '13

setting virtualshelves = 'don't allow' causes no changes in the staff client. users can still see the 'lists' option and create/view lists. virtualshelves = 'don't allow' should make completely remove lists from the staff client everything seems to work fine with this setting in the opac -- View this message in context: http://koha.1045719.n5.nabble.com/Bug-virtualshelves-permisssion-broken-in-… Sent from the Koha-general mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Login vs Sign in
by Zeno Tajoli 03 May '13

Hi to all, doing translation I find those two use of 'Sign In': #: opac-tmpl/prog/en/modules/opac-auth.tt:105 [% IF persona %] <a href="#" class="persona-button" id="browserid" ><span>Sign in with your Email</span></a> [% END %] #: opac-tmpl/prog/en/modules/opac-main.tt:67 [% IF persona %] <a href="#" class="persona-button" id="browserid" ><span>Sign in with your Email</span></a> [% END %] I think that it is better to use the sentence "Login with your Email", in fact we use 'login'. If you are agree, I open a bug about this.
