Hi there, I was involved a while ago in some programming on Koha. It's a standard check digit routine. Base 11 from memory. Horowhenua are supplied with the barcodes, but writing a program to generate numbers is an easy task (or you can change the algorithm seeing as you have access to the source). Here's my first question about Koha. How are the card numbers generated? I looked through the code and found the algorithm for checking validity of card numbers and determined that 123456789 was a valid card number, but how does one normally generate these? :) Steve.

HI Rob - Rosalie passed your message on to me "Open Source" is a particluar type of free software. The speach on the website (as all public speaches are) is perhaps a little simplistic. Open Source software means that you give away the source code to the software - uncompiled. I don't think that's what you do is it? I liken it to the difference between giving away a cake (free software) and giving away the recipie to make the cake (open source software). It means that any other person could take our source code, make changes too it, and then give it away themselves or even sell it (although there are some cavets in our license). Anyways, I did check very carefully before claiming to be the first "Open Source Library Management System" in the world - and as far as I know we actually are - but the key thing there is open source - not free, I certainly wouldn't claim that at all! I hope that clears up the misunderstanding. I think the 'world first' was referring to the open source nature of the project see . It is indeed great to hear that other people doing Open Source libraryware. We at the New Zealand Digital Library (http://www.nzdl.org) have been producing Open Source for fully digital libraries since 1995. We deliberately target low end humanitarian and similar organisations, with support for many languages (including the right-to-left reading order and large character sets), platforms back to win 3.11 and no propriortry software needed. See http://www.gnu.org/ for a definition of what we mean when we say open source. We operate our online catalogue using Inmagic DB/Textworks. Would it be possible to use Koha to operate an Intranet using Inmagic, or is it necessary to use the Koha catalogue also?
