The instructions given is for manual Koha installation under windows (without using Windows installer). You can download Koha2.2.5(linux version)from Koha official download site. Extract tar.gz files using gunzip or power archiever (You can download from http://www.gunzip.org) Then you can continue using the following steps. Notes that, I haven't test thoroughly the effects of this manual installation. If anybody finds any error, please let me know. It may be possible to import citations from Reference Manager into Koha using a free tool such as MARCEdit as a bridge to convert the references at text level. Could you perhaps provide an example or two of the "specific tagged format" that you need? That info would allow me to see if MARCEdit could be used to transform MARC records without too much additional effort on your part. Also, one needs to know if you are dealing with UNIMARC or MARC21 records. If you want to find out about MARCEdit on your own, you can surf to the MARC Records, Systems and Tools area of the LC website, and Find info on it on the page at URL <http://www.loc.gov/marc/marctools.html> Hope this helps. After writing, I did some more checking and what I eventually discovered in my personal Koha archive was that Phill H. had written a while back (March 2005 IIRC now) that the 856u did work in the classic template set-up of Koha, but not in the NPL template set-up of Koha that he, like so many us, want to use. Are you using "Koha-classic", Brooke, or the Koha-NPL style? If NPL style, where/how do I "flip the proper switches in parameters to display from 856u"? I don't see anything like that in parameters. That admitted, I probably should remember the important computer science info that the programmers are always reminding us to include when asking questions of this sort, as perhaps it is only a matter of me (and others) needing to use a later version of Koha: my current set-up is with Koha 2.2.3 (forgot to note what version Phill was using if he had included that info in his posting). BTW, Brooke, I love that 'Click the URL, I'm an E-book' idea: I plan to steal that! ;-) Thanks again for the reply, Brooke. Yes, Kevin, Koha can be used to provide access to an OPAC (online public access catalogue) of diverse materials of information, including but not limited to physical books (traditional monographs), journals (serials, periodicals, magazines) and electronic books (journals, etc.). For teachers in particular, it would be relevant perhaps (now or in the future) to distinguish various other sub-categories of printed or electronic text such as lesson plans, curriculum guides, testing standards, etc. as well as other categories of non-print materials such as maps, pictures, charts, audio-visual resources, etc., etc. I have long been curious about the virtual libraries out there. If someone from a virtual library -- or even a more conventional library that happens to have found a way to provide live access to electronic resources via Koha -- reads this message, perhaps that person could take a moment and sound off on listserv and let the Koha community know where they are and how they have managed their Koha. Kevin, I know that Koha can support inclusion of electronic resources after a fashion (see NPL site e.g.), but I was sure that someone had posted (or perhaps sent me directly? if so, since lost apparently) a solution to a question I had asked a while back about providing live-link access to electronic resources. In looking at my favourite model of Koha, the NPL site, I have found examples of electronic resources, but the only way to find the URL is to look at the MARC view and even then that is not a live link to the site indexed. One option to consider might be pursuing Koha while at the same time using the MYSQL to query the database you are developing in order to create, at the same time, on the side as it were, print (book) catalogues -- which could be updated monthly, quarterly, annually, whatever -- so that, when the power was out or telephone lines down, staff would still be able to conduct their research. When OPACs were first coming into fashion here in my home province of Manitoba, it was quite common for larger libraries to have COM (computer produced microfiche) catalogues kept around, just in case. In fact, some libraries even kept their old card catalogues (often hidden in the back in the technical services area) for staff use, again, just in case. Just a word of advice, which you can treat as you will. Hope that this helps a little and that someone will get back to the listserv regarding live-linking of URLs. Questions about Koha features

Hi, I'm a volunteer from the UK working with the National Teachers' Institute in Kaduna, Nigeria, to help them make better use of IT. NTI are a government organisation providing teacher training by distance learning. NTI headquarters in Kaduna has a library that they want to make more accessible to the student around the country and they are also planning to set up branch libraries nearer the students. At present they have started to set up a web library of electronic documents using Mambo and its DocMan module (http://www.mambodocman.com/) They would like to move from card indexes (inaccessible from outside the library) to a computerised catalogue that users all over the country can access. After that (long) introduction I have a couple of questions: 1. Can Koha be used as an interface to both the catalogue of physical books and the electronic books? The list of features on the website mentions virtual libraries but I couldn't find any more information. 2. Are there any Koha users in Nigeria? It would be very useful to be able to discuss how local issues (lack of electricity, difficult communications, etc.) have affected your use of Koha. Koha Newbie With Hardware Questions

Hello Fellow 'Kohaians', Hi all. Our small library (around 18,000 pieces) is getting set to install and use Koha. We really like the open source idea, and believe we have IT help to get it done. Our question is this: What hardware, exactly, will we need? We know we will need scanners, as well as competent computers to house Koha, we just aren't sure if there is a 'preffered' type. Any thoughts? Second, we already have quite a lot of 'dummy barcodes'. Will Koha allow us to use those, or do we -have- to use a printer for that? I'm very excited about this project, and appreciate the community that is here! Jen

If memory serves, the overall answer was that, at present, there is no way to access the information in a properly coded 650 $a with any further subdivisions (i.e. $x topical subds, $v for forms, $y for chronological, $z for geographical). One suggestion made was to create an new **additional** 650 tag that would have the punctuation 'internalised' as it were, so that a proper tag like this 650 _0 $aDescriptive cataloging $xRules. would become instead 650 -) $aDescriptive cataloging--Rules. Of course, this is not an ideal solution. For a small collection, it might be possible to process the first -- or most important -- 650 for each record manually this way. For a large collection, that would be a nightmare. In any case, you would want to retain your original MARC records before re-editing so that you can revert to them in the future when Koha has solved this problem without needing to delete any of the pro tem 650 fields you had to create. Towards the temporary solution for larger collections: I know that in the past the programmers have discussed writing scripts to concatenate call numbers into desired strings in one tag subfield; perhaps it would be possible to do the same for the 650? I do not know how multiple 650s are handled by Koha, or indeed, how the search function might be hampered by having multiple levels of subdivisions within the 650 $a (I would imagine that it would help streamline things to remove form subdivisions for the meantime). I hope that this helps somewhat, Unni. You can check the Koha archive yourself to see if you can locate the discussion to which I refer above. Another Koha-ite will probably respond with greater technical detail. Help with z395

I am sure this is somewhere on a past list and I've probably looked right at it. My Debian Sarge Install seems good BUT z39.5 just does not seem to show up anywhere. It is started in the background under user www-data. How can I test it? Search via Koha? Maybe I am wrong in thinking that it should help me in adding books etc? It seems from what I have read so far is that it will pull info from other servers regarding a book that I Search or Add to my biblio this way I do not need to add all the information? Thanks Al
