Interesting public lists?
by Daniel G 11 Aug '09

11 Aug '09

Hi, We're a new Koha library, and our reference librarian is looking for ideas about public lists to add to the opac. If your library, or a library you know, has good examples, would you please reply with a link to the opac? Many thanks, Daniel -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Interesting-public-lists--tp24922514p24922514.html Sent from the Koha - Discuss mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Is SQL in reports limited to a SELECT statement?
by Daniel G 11 Aug '09

11 Aug '09

Hi, I'm working on creating a report to parse data from biblioitems.marcxml. My SELECT statement is long and repetitive and could benefit from the use of variables. Do all reports created from SQL have to have only one statement, a SELECT statement? Thanks in advance for any tips, tricks, or kludges, or for confirming what I suspect is the awful truth. Request to the community
by Krishnan M 11 Aug '09

11 Aug '09

(Perhaps someone with more mileage in the Koha world should champion this....) I would like to request that we (as a community) take some positive steps to advance Koha in the light of recent (heated) discussion about changes to Koha possibly not making it back into core in good time for use by the largest possible number of users. Personally, i am convinced we will all be better off if we ensure a vibrant culture of contribution. Let's think about and put in place mechanisms that help this. The business end of the discussion, first: For example, 1) Let's create a process for everyone developing specific features by themselves to publish outlines of the same (using an RFC format, for example).. This can include vendor development sponsored by customers. 2) The process may allow for conceivable time offsets/delays, and certain other provisions for protecting the interests of the customers, including confidentiality, competitive considerations, etc. 3) As part of this process, participants can include commitments to contribute upto (or not less than) a particular portion of such additions 4) The process will include tracking that will self-report over a period of time how participants are keeping up (planned vs. actual), or even for the community to "report" on what they think is happening 5) While it may be inadvisable or infeasible to "throw the licensing book at" people, the important news always makes it out sooner or later...especially within the community Let's be careful to avoid even the slightest hint of "policing". We want this to be a friendly exchange. *BOLD* I am willing to bet anything that participants will benefit many times more than what they "put in" *BOLD* Now, onto other 'softer' aspects: Let's stop casting aspersions and bashing people/vendors, etc. on the list. The negative energy does no good. i like to adopt a simple philosophy to contributing to open source: There's nothing to lose (and conversely, nothing to gain...this latter might need some explanation, but later...). All of us have our own reasons for doing what we do, and no one needs sit 'in judgement' over others. Also, all feedback is welcome, so long as we use it constructively: When someone says 'Koha is good', i feel nice. When someone says 'Koha is not upto scratch', i feel even better: here's an opportunity to learn from them what exactly is it about Koha that can be improved to change that opinion in substance! Koha would not be what it is without the participation of every one that was ever involved, one way or another, and i mean that in the widest possible sense. Best regards, krishnan Love Cricket? Why the deafult install is important
by tajoli 10 Aug '09

10 Aug '09

Hi to all, reading the IFLA 2009 papers now on-line I see this papers: "An evaluation of multi-language/multi-script functions in KOHA" NAICHENG CHANG (Tatung University, Taipei, China) and YUCHIN TSAI (National Applied Research Laboratories, Taipei, China) Link: http://www.ifla.org/files/hq/papers/ifla75/135-chang-en.pdf The problems of the authors with coded fields of Unimarc (at pageas 7-8) are probably present only because those fields are not visible as default with their plugins. Re: [Koha] Support for Koha

Here's a small (hypothetical and allegoric) story to illustrate how i feel about the e-mail transcript from the ALA meeting... Once upon a time there was a great land. Many martyrs and heroes had poured their blood, sweat, and tears to make it a beautiful place to live in. The land welcomed all to itself, and everyone that visited marvelled at its wonder. It was always fertile and provided everything that people wanted or needed, only they had to sow the seeds first, and tend them with a little sincere effort. Also, it always felt like home for anyone that cared to spend a little time there. What was in your hearts mattered a lot more than what was in your purse. And everyone that made it their home, in their own small ways, contributed even more to its wonder. Then, one day, a few people decided to cordon off a part of this land for themselves, and make like, a 'reservation'. At the time, for the people that lived in this part, it sounded like a good idea. They all felt they belonged together more than other people did, and they'd all pool their resources and make their own little part of the land more prosperous. They started building a barbed wire fence around those parts. After a while, no one outside could see what was happening within, but for towering smoke stacks, that spoke of some secret industrial activity. But the carefree winds that once fanned the free flow of ideas, the plentiful showers that nourished the soil, the rivers that brought it prosperity, and the abundant sunshine that provided energy soon decided to shun those parts that lay within the fence. The goodwill of the many failed to reach the people inside the fence, not that it was ever withheld... Slowly, the land within became barren, ..., and failed... regards, krishnan See the Web's breaking stories, chosen by people like you. Check out Yahoo! Buzz. http://in.buzz.yahoo.com/

Supporting the Open Source Concept
by Bob Birchall ＠ Calyx 09 Aug '09

John Yokley wrote: > I want to inform the Koha community that PTFS is committed to abide by not only the law, > but the spirit of the open source movement. PTFS will submit all the Koha code we develop This is interesting but does not advance matters very far. To date, Liblime has an exemplary record in releasing code back to the project and should be encouraged to continue that. They do not deserve to be beaten up. PTFS' flagship product remains closed source. Of greater interest to me is the apparent attitude of Liblime customers (WALDO ?) who are reported to be applying "considerable pressure by sponsored developments to embargoing the code". So they want to take all the open source code contributed so far and not add back their developments? Perhaps they can tell us whether that is true and if so explain the rationale?
