[Koha] Re: Koha on Ubuntu install guide

The best way to make Koha an easy install for Ubuntu, rather than 
producing an ad-hock CD, would be to get it integrated into Debian.  
Once it is integrated into Debian, installing a basic Koha system would 
be a simple one line command.  Ubuntu base their system on Debian, so 
after the next Ubuntu release installing on an Ubuntu system would be 
just as easy.

To integrate Koha into Debian, Koha needs to be packaged by someone.  
There was previous interest in this 
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=186958) but it never 
got anywhere.  I would very much like to see Koha packaged for Debian, 
and I'm willing to do some work on it.

Is anyone else interested in helping with this effort?  The steps would 
roughly be packaging it for Debian, testing the package, and getting an 
official Debian Developer to sponsor it.  I have some experience with 
Debian packaging but I'm not an official Debian Developer.

We will have to move quickly if we want it to go into the next official 
Debian release, scheduled for December.  The release schedule I saw 
(http://lwn.net/Articles/185565/) puts the "freeze" at October 16th, 
which means we have to have it all ready before then. 

I've recently been through the process of installing Koha 2.2.5 on an 
Etch (Debian testing) computer.  I believe it will be relatively 
straightforward to produce a Debian package.
