If MARCedit really can't open it, it's most likely SOUL's fault, or PEBCAC. Are you sure you understand exactly what "flavour" of MARC SOUL is exporting? MARCedit will also convert from text CSV/Excel to MARC if you can get the SOUL data out that way.
