I've searched the manual, but it appears that there's no provision for
automatic staff notification whenever a patron places a hold on a
title.

Is this true?

Lacking that feature, the "Holds to pull" report has to be checked
periodically, correct?

I'm also unclear on the purpose of the "Holds queue" report. Can
someone clarify?

I have a couple of titles in the queue, but can't remember how they
got there, or how to get them off ...
