This patch should resolve these issues:

It applies against the current HEAD, but should apply against 3.2.x as
well. Once it is pushed to HEAD, I'll back-port to 3.2.x.

In the meantime, testing and sign-off would be appreciated. (CC' ing
the devel list to get more coverage.)
