Koha wiki maintenance change
Hi, To combat a recent spate of spamming on the wiki [1], in order to edit a page the wiki now requires that your account has a confirmed email address. Specifically, this means that new users will be required to supply an email address when they create an account, then respond to an email sent by the wiki in order to confirm the account. If you already have an account on the wiki but are no longer able to edit pages, you will need to confirm your email address. To do so: 1. Log in with your account. 2. Go to the preferences page [2] 3. Add an email address if necessary 4. In the email section, click on the link or button to send a confirmation email. If the wiki says that it already sent you an email, you will need to have it resend it. 5. Follow the instructions in the email to confirm your account. I apologize for any inconvenience. If you run into any problems, please feel free to email me or one of the other wiki administrators [3] directly. Thank you very much Galen! A little inconvenience is worth having a clean site (in my opinion)! Nicole On Fri, Jan 28, 2011 at 8:57 AM, Galen Charlton <gmc@esilibrary.com> wrote:

Is that barrier to entry really necessary? It looked like the recent spammers were creating pages - could page creation alone be restricted, or was there page-editing spamming that others cleaned before I saw? And it looks like spam page creation is continuing unhindered by this new requirement, but it prevents me doing anything about them. Cheers m'dears(!) I remember what we were told: "There are many extensions which provide spam protection in MediaWiki. [...] the Koha community should not need to use spam defences which are not implemented reasonably." -- Thomas Dukleth, 22 Apr 2010 Perhaps the MediaWiki supporters could suggest a more reasonable spam defence? Can you really not confirm your email address via a confirmation email? Or am I misunderstanding your meaning here? Kind Regards, Chris

Yes, some misunderstanding. The above was written while waiting for the confirmation email to arrive. During that time, I could do nothing. Once it arrived, I was still not allowed to delete spam pages. Is it possible to implement a more reasonable antispam, or should we look for alternatives? Accounts with normal privileges can, however, empty out a page. Deleting a page in MediaWiki is reserved for wiki administrators, a list of whom can be found at http://wiki.koha-community.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListUsers&group=sysop Administrator privileges will readily be granted on request to anybody known to me or one of the other administrators.
