Thanks, and another import question...
Good morning, Thanks to Bernardo, Ian and Lenora for their help yesterday with my bulkmarcimport problem. One of the tips I received alerted me to the fact that I did not have a 952 $a AND $b in my MARC records. I only had the $b (permanent location), populated with my library code "Cary". I have been confused by this $a and $b thing all along (and still am - more on this below). I edited my MARC to include $a, then tried importing the records again, and this time the records were loaded (thanks everyone!) although items were not. For each of my 23 MARC records, I received a variation of this error: ".Item not added (bib 10, item tag #1, barcode 100034): invalid homebranch" So, I take this to mean that not only do I need a $a, but it needs to be populated before I import the record if I also want to add the item. Is this correct? Can my $a and $b be the same code? I am a single location, no branches or anything, which is why I had thought that only one or the other was needed, but not both. If there is someplace in the sys preferences where I specify the $a, I do not know where this is. I see that I have to put in the library code, which I did, and then this is identical to the code that I put into my $b. Do I just add $a using MARCedit and add a code to all records there? I had left $a blank when I edited it before the successful import. I hope I am being clear. Thanks again for all of your help! First, you can have the same location for home and holding branch. In your library you will never need to have different location codes. In multi-branch systems the home branch is the branch that owns the item and the holding branch is where the book is now. As for your location code, you want to set this up Admin > Libraries, branches and groups Whatever you use for the Code for your library there is the code you should enter in your $a and $b fields. Hope that helps a bit, Nicole 2009/12/10 Amy Schuler <schulera@caryinstitute.org>:

Lenora, At my library, we use Branches for "physical buildings", and Shelving Locations (authorized value LOC, items.location, or MARC 952$c) to denote which area of the library the material is in. Downside: all our libraries wind up having the same available shelving locations, even if the location is specific to our main branch (like a unique collection's stacks). There is an additional, somewhat mysterious parameter called 'stack' (authorized value STACK, items.stack, 952$j), which I'm not sure how to use. Anyone have any experience with it? If limited the selection of shelving location by branchcode is something a number of people want, I'd be more than happy to take a shot at it. If someone wants to create a bug report for the feature on bugs.koha.org to describe it better, I'll see what I can do. I don't believe that is how it is meant to work. Homebranch is meant to be the library that owns a given item, whereas holdingbranch is meant to be the library that is currently in possession of an item. Usually they will both be the same branch code unless an item is transferred to another library in your system for some reason. Are you aware of the "Shelving Location" feature? It you need to levels, you could go with Collection Code / Shelving Location. Then search and make sure all displays about this record is ok. Good morning,
Thanks to Bernardo, Ian and Lenora for their help
bulkmarcimport problem. One of the tips I received alerted me to the fact that I did not have a 952 $a AND $b in my MARC records. I only had the $b (permanent location), populated with my
“Cary”. I have been confused by this $a and $b
still am – more on this below). I edited my MARC to include $a, then tried importing the records again, and this time the records were loaded (thanks everyone!) although items were not. For each of my 23 MARC records, I received a variation of this error:
“.Item not added (bib 10, item tag #1, barcode 100034): invalid homebranch”
So, I take this to mean that not only do I need a $a, but it needs to be populated before I import the record if I also want to add the item. Is this correct? Can my $a and $b be the same code? I am a single location, no branches or anything, which is why I had thought that only one or the other was needed, but not both.
If there is someplace in the sys preferences where I specify the $a, I do not know where this is. I see that I have to put in
yesterday with my library code thing all along (and the library
code, which I did, and then this is identical to the code that I put into my $b. Do I just add $a using MARCedit and add a code to all records there? I had left $a blank when I edited it before the successful import. I hope I am being clear.
Yes ... you'll have to put in your library code into $a subfield of all your records
Something like this:
=952 \\$p100025$oXA .M59$d20050608$bCARY$aCARY
But ... even if you get all your records imported, I guess you'll be hitting another wall soon, when you try to set up 'issuing rules', because you 952 field does not have a $y subfield where the 'itemtype' should go (obviously, the itemtype code to add into $y must be already defined in Koha)
your record should look something like this:
=952 \\$p100025$oXA .M59$d20050608$bCARY$aCARY$yBK
Hope this help a little and save you a little time!
Best regards!
