Katipo/Koha Relationship With Greenstone Question
http://www.greenstone.org/ Is there any relationship between Koha, with particular reference to Katipo Communications or other current NZ developers, and Greenstone? Would Greenstone and Koha be seen as having competing (presumably on friendly terms) or complimentary interests? Greg Greg Lawson Rolling Hills Consolidated Library 1912 N. Belt Highway St. Joseph, MO 64506
Hi Greg Complimentary, Greenstone is a digital library system, Koha is an integrated library system. They both do quite different things. You could use Koha to help catalogue your collection in Greenstone if you wanted :) Greenstone searches the content .... Koha searches the metadata. So if they are complementary and complimentary, are they then completely comparable and compatible? Greg -------------------------- Galen Charlton wrote:

They do totally different things. You cant circulate items with greenstone, ,... in fact you couldnt run a library with it at all. Conversely, Koha currently you cant load digital content in, and search over it. Fedora, Kete, Greenstone , lots more are similair Koha, Evergreen, III, Sirsi Dynix's systems, those are similair I think the most similair about Koha and Greenstone is they both have the word library in their by lines :) They really are totally different systems designed to do totally different things. When Koha was first released, quite a few of us Katipods went up to Hamilton to spend some time with the Greenstone developers, there are always things you can learn from each other :) But no, not competing at all Chris On Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 7:50 AM, gsl <gsl@rollinghills.lib.mo.us> wrote:

hi
Is there any relationship between Koha, with particular reference to Katipo Communications or other current NZ developers, and Greenstone?
We know each other, and we (Katipo) have used & recommended Greenstone in the past for projects. Greenstone and our new product Kete are more direct competitors, although again we think they do fairly different things, and certainly have a different "reason for being". If you want a digital library that you can take with you on a CD or USB stick Greenstone is the bomb - if you want a community of neophytes to build a digital library that's what Kete is for.
Would Greenstone and Koha be seen as having competing (presumably on friendly terms) or complimentary interests?
We keep an eye each others development, hang out on each others mailing lists that sort of thing, and now that Katipo does a bit more in the digital library space we compete some as well in that sphere I think. More about kete - www.kete.org.nz Cheers Rachel
