The OPAC's detail page sorts by default on the *first* column in the table which displays the holdings information. I'd prefer location (the library branch) -- I've been asked for that sort myself. It makes more sense in terms of the user, who may want to know which branches have the item. Don't know about "lots" not having shelving location, but I work with at least three sites who don't use it. I'd say take empty shelving locations into account.
